The Nutcracker [Novel Review] ESP/ENG
Happy New Year to all my friends! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones, and that this year brings you many blessings and beautiful things. Today I'm sharing a classic from the holiday season we've just left behind: The Nutcracker. It's a story commonly seen on stages around the world, told through pirouettes, chassés, and petites performed by skilled ballet dancers. But the story I'm sharing with you today isn't the one told on pointe shoes, but rather through the pages of a book. You probably didn't know that The Nutcracker was originally a Christmas tale written by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
Feliz próspero año a todos, amigos míos, espero que hayan pasado unas fiestas alegres y maravillosas en compañía de amigos y seres queridos, que este año les conceda muchas bendiciones y cosas hermosas. Hoy traigo para compartir, un clásico de la época decembrina que acabamos de dejar atrás, se trata de El Cascanueces, una historia muy común de ver en los escenarios de todo el mundo, contada a través de Piruette, Chassé y Pettite alegros, ejecutados por hábiles bailarines de ballet, pero la historia que hoy les traigo no es aquella que se cuenta sobre zapatillas de puntas, sino a través de páginas, porque probablemente ustedes no sabían que El Cascanueces era originalmente un cuento de navidad escrito por E.T.A. Hoffmann.
Marie Stahlbaum is a very cheerful and lively girl who loves stories, playing, and dancing. That's why one Christmas, her godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a nutcracker and tells her a fantastic story about a prince who, because of a terrible spell cast by the mouse king, was transformed into a nutcracker. Just as the Christmas party ends and all the guests leave, Marie sees her nutcracker come to life and face an army of mice led by a king. Seeing that the nutcracker is in serious trouble, Marie decides to intervene by throwing her slipper, which traps the mouse. The Nutcracker then transforms into a handsome prince who takes Marie through a magical world where everything comes to life. It is a wonderful journey through various kingdoms such as the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets, even meeting the Sugar Plum Fairy. In the end, Marie wakes up in her living room with serious doubts about everything she experienced. Was it a dream or did it really happen?
Marie Stahlbaum es una niña muy alegre y vivaz que adora las historias, jugar y bailar, es por eso que durante una navidad, su padrino Drosselmeyer le regala un cascanueces y le cuenta una fantástica historia sobre un príncipe que, por causa de un terrible hechizo del rey ratón quedó convertido en un cascanueces. Justo cuando termina la fiesta de navidad y todos los invitados se retiran, Marie ve como su cascanueces cobra vida y se enfrenta a un ejército de ratones comandados por un rey, y al ver que el cascanueces está en serios problemas Marie decide intervenir arrojando su zapatilla, la cuál deja en jaque al ratón. El Cascanueces se transforma entonces en un apuesto príncipe que lleva a Marie a través de un mundo mágico en el cuál todo cobra vida, es una maravillosa travesía a través de varios reinos como la Tierra de la Nieve y el Reino de los Dulces, hasta con el Hada de Azúcar, al final Marie despierta en la sala de su casa con serias dudas acerca de todo lo que vivió, ¿Sería un sueño o tal vez ocurrió realmente?
The story highlights the power of imagination that we all have in childhood; that blend of reality and fantasy is what makes us special at that age. But the story also tells of a journey through which Marie finds her own identity, evolves, and becomes a young woman. So it also speaks of the transition to maturity. But even though it is full of tender and kind characters, it also shows us that evil is part of life's evolutionary processes, in this case represented by the mouse king and his army. But it is through perseverance and faith that our protagonists manage to overcome the dangers and advance toward the sugar fairy.
El cuento resalta el poder de la imaginación que todos tenemos en la niñez, esa mezcla entre realidad y fantasía es lo que nos hace especiales a esa edad, pero la historia también nos habla de una travesía a través de la cual Marie encuentra su propia identidad, evoluciona y se convierte en una jovencita, así que también nos habla de la transición hacia la madurez, pero a pesar de que está lleno de personajes tiernos y bondadosos, también nos muestra que la maldad es parte de los procesos evolutivitos de la vida, en este caso representados en el rey ratón y su ejército, pero es a través de la perseverancia y la fe, como nuestros protagonistas logran sortear los peligros y avanzar hacia el hada de azúcar.
Ah! But I haven't yet told you that this version, or rather, Hoffmann's original novel, is somewhat darker and more somber than later versions, especially the ballet adaptation with Tchaikovsky's music. The original novel speaks of loss and forced maturity, something very common in the era in which it was written, the 19th century, The appearance of the mouse king is narrated in greater depth, acquiring a dark but fascinating nuance; even if we put ourselves in the context of poor Marie, that must have been very scary. The novel contrasts the rigid, bourgeois world of the Stahlbaum family with the dreamlike world of sweets and toys where Marie can feel completely free.
¡Ahh! pero yo todavía no les he contado a ustedes que esta versión, o mejor dicho, la novela original de Hoffmann es un tanto más oscura y sombría que las versiones posteriores, y en especial la adaptación al ballet con música de Tchaikovsky, la novela original nos habla de pérdida y madurez forzada, algo muy común de la época en la que fue escrita, en el siglo XIX. La aparición del rey ratón es narrada con mayor profundidad, adquiriendo un matiz sombrío pero fascinante, incluso si nos ponemos en contexto en el lugar de la pobre Marie, eso debió dar mucho miedo. La novela contrasta el mundo real burgués y acartonado de la familia Stahlbaum con el onírico de los dulces y juguetes en el que Marie puede sentirse totalmente libre
The book also speaks of love as a transformative element, but it also speaks of facing fears to strengthen the spirit, the search for identity, and especially the inner strength to overcome any obstacle. Marie discovered that she was much stronger and more powerful than she had ever imagined.
El libro también nos habla del amor como elemento transformador, pero también nos habla de enfrentar los miedos para fortalecer el espíritu, la búsqueda de la identidad y en especial de la fuerza interior ara poder vencer cualquier obstáculo. Marie descubrió que era mucho más fuerte y poderosa de lo que realmente creía.

Happy New Year! Wow, what an interesting tidbit! I honestly had no idea that Hoffmann's original story was darker and more somber than the ballet. I've always pictured The Nutcracker as something purely magical and sweet. I'm definitely adding it to my reading list (maybe I'll wait until next Christmas to be in the right mood). Happy New Year to you too. Yes, that's right, the whole Mouse King plot is a bit darker than in the ballet version, but overall the ballet is a good adaptation.
