The Act [Mi Opnion] ESP/ENG
I recently had the opportunity to watch a series that deeply affected me, especially after learning that it's based on real events. It's about Gypsy, a young girl who was raised by her mother with excessive jealousy and pampering. According to Dee Dee (the girl's mother), Gypsy had a number of illnesses that were slowly deteriorating her body and even had a mental disability, which is why she looked younger than her chronological age. She also required a wheelchair and a lot of attention. But the reality was that the mother suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which involves excessive and overly protective care. and even go so far as to make another person (usually children) sick to gain benefits or simply the pity of others. Over time, Gypsy herself discovered that her mother had even lied to her about her age and that she had been of legal age for a long time, but her mother prevented her from taking care of herself, walking, and certainly from maintaining friendships, much less romantic relationships with men. This whole situation unbalanced Gypsy to the point of triggering the worst outcome in the story.
Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de ver una serie que me impactó, en especial luego de saber que está basada en hechos reales. Se trata de Gypsy, una jovencita que fue criada por su madre con mucho celos y mimos, porque según Dee Dee (la madre de la niña) ella tenía un montón de enfermedades que iban degenerando su cuerpo poco a poco e incluso tenía retraso mental, así que por esa razón se veía más joven de su edad cronológica, además requería de una silla de rueda y muchas atenciones, pero la realidad era que la madre sufría del síndrome de Munchausen por poder, que consiste en agobiar con cuidados y llegar hasta el punto de enfermar a otra persona (generalmente hijos) para obtener beneficios o simplemente la lástima de los demás, con el tiempo la propia Gypsy descubrió que su madre incluso le había mentido con el tema de su edad y que hacía mucho tiempo que era mayor de edad, pero la madre le impedía valerse por sí misma, caminar y desde luego mantener amistades y mucho menos relaciones sentimentales con hombres, pero toda esta situación fue desequilibrando a Gypsy hasta el punto de desencadenar el peor desenlace para la historia.
The plot unfolds in two timelines, remaining in the present but then flashing back to the day of the events to provide clues. In fact, the first episode opens with Dedee's death; we know she was murdered and can only deduce that poor, innocent Gypsy was kidnapped, but we don't have any further details. These emerge as the plot progresses. At first, we empathize with this mother-daughter pair, learning about their routine, which evokes a great deal of tenderness. However, as the series progresses and the end approaches, this same routine becomes dense and dark as we gain more information and details that provide greater context for the characters and the situation.
La trama se desarrolla en dos fases temporales porque se mantiene en el presente pero de pronto viaja al día de los hechos para dar algunas pistas, de hecho el primer capítulo inicia con la muerte de Dedee, sabemos que fue asesinada y solo podemos deducir que la pobre e inocente Gypsy fue secuestrada, pero no tenemos mayores detalles, estos van apareciendo conforme la trama avanza. Al principio logramos empatizar con esta pareja de madre e hija, conocemos su rutina y todo esto genera mucha ternura, pero a lo largo de la serie y conforme se va acercando el final, esta misma rutina se torna densa y obscura porque ya vamos obteniendo más información y detalles que nos ofrecen más contexto de los personajes y la situación.
The performances of everyone were wonderful, but I think the best is that of the actress who plays Dee Dee because you can see her character's emotional decline from the beginning to the end of the series. It's not easy because within the series itself, her character also has to act to try to elicit sympathy from others. She wants to project an image of a perfect, selfless, tender, and fragile mother who would do anything for her daughter, but at the same time, there are times when she shows her true self: obsessive, possessive, and even aggressive.
Las actuaciones de todos estuvieron maravillosas pero considero que la mejor de todas es la de la actriz que interpreta a Dee Dee porque se puede notar el declive emocional de su personaje desde el inicio hasta el final de la serie, no es fácil porque dentro de la propia serie su personaje también debe actuar para tratar de transmitir compasión a los demás. Ella quiere proyectar una imagen de madre perfecta y abnegada, tierna y frágil, que haría cualquier cosa por su hija, pero al mismo tiempo hay ocasiones en que se muestra tal cuál es: obsesiva, posesiva e incluso agresiva.
But to be fair, I'd also like to acknowledge the work of the actor who played Nick (Gypsy's boyfriend) because he did a very good job. His character wasn't easy either, because he had to portray a troubled, unbalanced young man who, at the same time, pretends to be normal.
Pero para ser más justa también me gustaría reconocer el trabajo del actor que interpretó a Nick (El novio de Gypsy) Porque hizo un muy buen trabajo. Su personaje tampoco era fácil porque debía interpretar a un joven desequilibrado, perturbado, pero que al mismo tiempo pretende ser normal
I don't think the series sought to empathize with Gypsy or justify her actions in any way, hiding behind the abuse she suffered. Rather, it simply aimed to convey the truth of what happened, without mincing words, without concealing or omitting anything. From my perspective, the court's decision is terribly unjust. If the abuse Gypsy endured at the hands of her mother was a mitigating factor, then they should also have considered that Nick had problems too. It was obvious he wasn't normal, and yet he was dealt the full force of the law. Today, he's locked away in prison, while Gypsy is free, married, and happy. Furthermore, we cannot ignore the fact that Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a disease, so Dee Dee was also ill. Therefore, we can deduce that the blame is shared and that although Dee Dee took advantage of many people, there was also a lack of government oversight to know how the benefits she offered were being administered. However, there were doctors who did not do their job properly and simply filled out and signed forms without much context, probably just to collect the health insurance.
No creo que la serie haya buscado empatizar con Gypsy o justificar de alguna manera sus actos, amparándose en el abuso al que había sido sometida, sino que pretendía simplemente transmitir la verdad de los hechos, lo que sucedió sin pelos y señales, sin ocultar u omitir nada. Desde mi punto de vista es terriblemente injusta la decisión que tomó el juzgado porque si los abusos a los que había sido sometida Gypsy por parte de su madre era un atenuante, entonces también debían tomar en cuenta que Nick también tenía problemas, a leguas se notaba que no era normal, y sin embargo sobre él si cayó todo el peso de la ley, hoy en día está refundido en la cárcel mientras que Gypsy está libre, casada y feliz. Además tampoco podemos pasar desapercibido el hecho de que el síndrome de Munchausen por poder es una enfermedad, así que Dee Dee también estaba enferma, por lo tanto podemos deducir que las culpas están repartidas y que a pesar de que Dee Dee se aprovechó de mucha gente, también faltó fiscalización por parte del gobierno para saber como estaban siendo administrados los beneficios que ofrecía, sin embargo hubo médicos que no hicieron bien su trabajo y se dedicaron simplemente a rellenar y firmar formas sin mucho contexto, probablemente solo para cobrar el seguro médico.
In short, I loved the series. It only has a few episodes, maybe 8 or 9, I don't remember exactly, and I like it because it doesn't waste time on digressions or unnecessary scenes, but gets straight to the point. The acting is very good and they manage to convey the emotions and feelings of all the characters, something you can notice even more intensely if you read or research the real story beforehand. En resumen, me encantó la serie, tiene pocos episodios como 8 o 9, no recuerdo bien, y me gusta porque no pierde el tiempo en divagaciones o escenas innecesarias, sino que va directo al grano, las actuaciones son muy buenas y logran transmitir las emociones y sentimientos de todos los personajes, algo que puedes notar con más intensidad si previamente lees o te documentas sobre la historia real, así que de verdad se las recomiendo mucho, por ahora me despido hasta una próxima oportunidad, dios mediante, les envío besos y abrazos virtuales 😘 🤗.
