Pride and prejudice [Book Review] ESP/ENG

Today I finished reading this other classic of English literature by Jane Austen, I did it on the recommendation of my daughters, after we saw the movie they told me "the book is much better" so I was very curious and here I am, with a huge smile as I write these lines after reading the last chapter.

Hoy terminé de leer este otro clásico de la literatura inglesa de Jane Austen, lo hice por recomendación de mis hijas, luego de que vimos la película ellas me dijeron "el libro es mucho mejor" así que me dio mucha curiosidad y aquí me tienen, con una enorme sonrisa mientras redacto estas líneas después de leer el último capítulo.

It is the story of a family, the Bennets, who have five daughters, Mrs. Bennet wants them to marry wealthy men who can ensure their future, so when Mr. Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy arrive, the woman is full of hope and enthusiasm, however she does not take into account the temperament of her daughters, especially Elizabeth who has a strong personality and a very definite criterion. Constantly the complex character of this girl often rubs against that of Mr. Darcy, but at some point the true feelings are exposed despite the disagreements and the predetermined social concepts of the time.

Se trata de la historia de una familia, los Bennet, quienes tienen cinco hijas, la señora Bennet quiere que ellas se casen con hombres adinerados que puedan asegurar su futuro, así que cuando llegan el señor Bingley y su amigo el señor Darcy, la mujer se llena de esperanzas y entusiasmo, sin embargo ella no toma en cuenta el temperamento de sus hijas, en especial de Elizabeth quien tiene una marcada personalidad y un criterio muy definido. Constantemente el complejo carácter de esta muchacha a menudo roza con el del señor Darcy, pero en algún punto los verdaderos sentimientos quedan al descubierto a pesar de las desavenencias y los conceptos sociales predeterminados de la época.

I have realized that Jane Austen's stories are very similar to each other, some have even dared to say that she recycled ideas, but although it is true that many of her stories are similar because they handle the same concept of difference between social classes and prejudices of society, each one has its own style and charm. Somehow I felt identified with the story because it reminded me of the time when I was single and lived at home with my parents, I have only one brother, the rest of us are all women, so it was easy for me to get along with the camaraderie that existed between the Bennet sisters, especially between Jane and Elizabeth.

Me he dado cuenta que las historias de Jane Austen son muy parecidas entre sí, algunos hasta se han atrevido a decir que ella reciclaba ideas, pero aunque es cierto que muchas de sus historias se parecen porque manejan el mismo concepto de diferencia entre clases sociales y prejuicios de la sociedad, cada una tiene su propio estilo y encanto. De alguna manera me sentí identificada con la historia porque me recordó la época en la que yo era soltera y vivía en casa con mis padres, tengo un solo hermano, del resto somos todas mujeres, así que me resultó fácil congeniar con esa camaradería que había entre las hermanas Bennet, en especial entre Jane y Elizabeth.

Jane Austen was a very advanced author for her time, so although this is partly a love story, it does not cloy you with romanticism because it is told from a more objective and realistic point of view. Unlike fairy tales, the main characters do not fall in love only with the beauty of the other, nor are they carried away by the apparent attributes and qualities, on the contrary, they go through an evolutionary process because the main objective is to show that the expectations that others have (family or society in general) does influence a lot in the decisions. The main characters are not romanticized in any way, on the contrary, they are presented to us with all their flaws. Elizabeth represents pride and Darcy represents prejudice, that is why the union of the two seems impossible at the beginning, because while he was carried away by social precepts he could not see who Elizabeth really was, he had already put a label on her that prevented him from knowing her in depth, and while she was carried away by her negative emotions she could not accept that what she felt for him was something much more pure and beautiful.

Jane Austen era una autora muy adelantada para su época, así que aunque esta es en parte una historia de amor no llega a empalagarte con romanticismo porque está contada desde un punto de vista más objetivo y realista. A diferencia de los cuentos de hadas, los personajes principales no se enamoran solo con la belleza del otro ni se dejan llevar por los atributos y cualidades aparentes, al contrario, ellos pasan por un proceso evolutivo porque el objetivo principal es demostrar que las expectativas que los demás tienen (familia o sociedad en general) si influye mucho en las decisiones. Los personajes principales no son romantizados de ningún modo, al contrario, se presentan ante nosotros con todo y sus defectos. Elizabeth representa el orgullo y Darcy el prejuicio, por eso la unión de ambos parece imposible al inicio, porque mientras él se dejaba llevar por los preceptos sociales no podía ver quien era Elizabeth realmente, ya él le había puesto una etiqueta que le impedía conocerla a profundidad, y mientras ella se dejaba llevar por sus emociones negativas no podía aceptar que lo que sentía por él era algo mucho más puro y hermoso.

I really liked those interactions between Elizabeth and Darcy because they were usually very funny, she is a shrewd and shrewd woman, quick with words and knows how to defend herself very well with them, she doesn't need anyone's approval, while Mr. Darcy is an even more complex character and full of ambiguities because while his physical image may seem neat and nice, when crossing a few words with him everyone realizes that he is arrogant and prejudiced, which obviously makes a bad impression, so for that I do not blame Elizabeth, but as time progresses she can know him better, thus discovering that he has a deep sense of justice and honor.

Me gustó mucho esas interacciones entre Elizabeth y Darcy porque usualmente eran muy divertidas, ella es una mujer astuta y perspicaz, de rápidas palabras y se sabe defender muy bien con ellas, no necesita la aprobación de nadie, mientras que el señor Darcy es un personaje aún más complejo y lleno de ambigüedades porque si bien su imagen física puede parecer pulcra y agradable, al cruzar algunas palabras con él todos se dan cuenta que es arrogante y prejuicioso, lo que obviamente causa una mala impresión, así que por eso no culpo a Elizabeth, pero a medida que el tiempo avanza ella puede conocerlo mejor, descubriendo así que él tiene un profundo sentido de la justicia y el honor

Austen's narrative style is neat and elegant, very typical of her time, but in addition to the skillful dialogues that she manages in this story, one of the things I enjoyed the most were the descriptions of the environment that moved me mentally and emotionally to that cottage environment, in fact I liked to read listening to music of that style to better get into the mood 🤗

El estilo de Austen en su narrativa es pulcro y elegante, muy propio de su época, pero además de los diálogos tan hábiles que ella maneja en esta historia, una de las cosas que más disfruté fueron las descripciones del entorno que me trasladaron mental y emocionalmente a a ese ambiente cottage, de hecho me gustaba leer escuchando música de ese estilo para entrar mejor en ambiente 🤗
