Most of you probably remember Matilda from the popular movie starring Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito, which is now considered a cult classic. But few of you likely know that the original story, the one in the book, is English, and this could give it a different meaning and perspective. I had the opportunity to read this wonderful book by Roald Dahl, and I certainly didn't miss it. So today I'm sharing my thoughts on Matilda.
Seguramente la mayoría de ustedes quizá recuerdan a Matilda por La popular película protagonizada por Mara Wilson y Dany Devito que hoy en día se considera una película de culto, pero probablemente pocos sepan que la historia original, es decir, la que está en el libro es inglesa y esto podría darle otro sentido y enfoque. Tuve la oportunidad de leerlo este precioso libro de Roald Dahl y obviamente no la desaproveché, así hoy les traigo mi opinión acerca de Matilda.
Matilda was born into a dysfunctional family. Her father, Charlie, is a dishonest man who manipulates old cars, making them look new and then selling them for a higher price. Matilda's older brother constantly bullies her, and her mother is a neglectful and irresponsible woman who leaves her to fend for herself. Fortunately, Matilda is an extraordinary child in many ways. She is responsible, self-sufficient, and very diligent, so she learned basic things very early on and gradually improved until she was old enough to go to school. There she met Miss Honey, a sweet, bohemian, and understanding teacher who teaches her students with patience and love. Her personality contrasts sharply with that of her Aunt Trunchbull (the headmistress), a cruel and bitter woman who hates children and subjects them to inhumane treatment. In fact, this is how she treated Honey when she was a child, even denying her the inheritance that was rightfully hers and demanding payment for every penny she had invested in her education. The girl's higher education began when she entered university to train as a teacher. But Matilda, who had developed kinesthetic powers because of her high IQ, became her main friend and ally.
Matilda nació en el seno de una familia disfuncional, Charlie, el padre es un hombre deshonesto, que manipula autos viejos y los hace parecer nuevos para luego venderlos por un costo más elevado, el hermano mayor de Matilda la molesta todo el tiempo y su madre es una mujer desobligada e irresponsable que la deja todo el tiempo al cuidado de si misma, pero afortunadamente ella es una niña extraordinaria en muchos sentidos, es responsable, autosuficiente y muy diligente, así que muy temprano aprendió cosas básicas y poco a poco fue superándose a sí misma hasta que tuvo edad para ir a la escuela, allí conoció a la señorita Miel, una maestra dulce, bohemia y comprensiva, que enseña a sus alumnos con paciencia y amor, su personalidad contrasta con la de su tía Trunchbull (la directora del colegio) una mujer cruel y amargada, que odia a los niños y los somete a trataos inhumanos, de hecho fue así como trató a Miel cuando era niña, incluso negándole la herencia que le correspondía, cobrando además cada centavo que había invertido en la educación superior de la muchacha cuando ella ingresó a la universidad ara formarse como maestra. Pero Matilda, que había desarrollado poderes quinestésicos por causa de su alto coeficiente intelectual, se convirtió en su principal amiga y aliada.
There's something about English literature that has always caught my attention, and that's precisely why I mentioned that the book Matilda is from the UK and not the USA, as some people might think. It's usually characterized by child abuse or at least a certain disdainful treatment of children, regardless of the historical context. I've noticed this with Oliver Twist, Oliver Button (which I'd like to talk about another time), and Harry Potter. I don't know why, but this became very popular in English children's books.
Hay algo que siempre me ha llamado la atención de la literatura inglesa y por esa razón precisamente mencioné que en el libro Matilda es del Reino Unido y no de USA como algunas personas pudieran pensar, y es que usualmente se caracteriza por tener maltrato infantil o al menos cierto trato desdeñoso hacia los niños , sin importar el contexto histórico, al menos en algo que h e podido notar con Olliver Twist, Olliver Buttom (del cuál me gustaría hablarles en otra ocasión) y Harry Potter, no sé por qué razón pero esto se popularizó mucho en los libros ingleses para niños.
But anyway, what I like most is that it's a light yet dynamic read. The events unfold not too quickly or too slowly, but at their own pace, helping us to process each situation. Matilda is very mature for her age, that's true, but she still retains a certain naiveté and the innocence typical of her age. That's why she sometimes acts deliberately and impulsively. However, she continues to cultivate her mind because she knows it can be a way to escape her family environment. She knows she's extraordinary, different from the rest, but she never tries to impress anyone, much less boast about her powers. In fact, she tries to hide them and only reveals them to her teacher at certain times, simply because she trusts her, identifies with her, and sees her as her equal. She's a cultured woman with a painful past who focused all her time and energy on becoming a light in the midst of the gloomy primary school.
Pero en fin, lo que más me gusta es que se trata de una lectura ligera pero dinámica, los hechos van transcurriendo no con demasiada rapidez o con lentitud, sino a su debido tiempo, ayudándonos a digerir cada situación. Matilda es muy madura para su edad, eso es verdad, pero no deja de tener cierta ingenuidad y la inocencia propia de su edad, por eso actúa a veces deliberadamente y de forma impulsiva, sin embargo ella continúa cultivando su mente porque sabe que puede ser una salida para escapar de su entorno familiar, sabe que es extraordinaria, diferente al resto pero nunca busca impresionar a nadie y mucho menos alardear de sus poderes, de hecho procura esconderlos y solo los muestra a su maestra en determinado momento, solo porque confía en ella, se siente identificada con ella y la ve como su igual, es una mujer culta con un pasado doloroso que enfocó todo su tiempo y energía en convertirse en una luz en medio de la lúgubre escuela primaria.
Through his narrative and from a child's perspective, Roald Dahl speaks to us of resilience, courage, and strength. I think it's a clever way to encourage children not to give up, to believe in themselves, despite any hurtful comments they might receive. He also shows that through constant study we become wiser, and wisdom itself is an extraordinary power that can help you in any situation. Obviously, the book exaggerates everything and makes it seem almost cartoonish, but we mustn't forget that it's aimed at children, and in this way, the message comes across more effectively, emphasizing the importance of intelligence and reading. But most importantly, it also shows us that evil is a choice. No matter your background—whether you come from abusive parents or guardians, a dysfunctional home, or the best of homes—if you want to be a good person and improve yourself every day, you will succeed. Matilda and Miss Honey are a clear example of this.
A través de su narrativa y desde un enfoque infantil, Roald Dahl nos habla de reciliencia, valor y fuerza, pienso que es una forma astuta de incentivar a los niños a no rendirse, a creer en sí mismos, a pesar de los comentarios hirientes que pudieran recibir, además de mostrar que a través del estudio constante nos hacemos cada vez más sabios y la sabiduría de por sí es un poder extraordinario que te puede ayudar en cualquier situación. Obviamente el libro magnifica todo y lo hace parecer incluso caricaturesco pero no debemos olvidar que está dirigido a niños, y de esta manera el mensaje llega de manera más eficiente, haciendo énfasis en la importancia de la inteligencia y la lectura, pero lo más importante de todo es que también nos demuestra que la maldad es una elección, no importa el ambiente del que provengas, con padres o tutores agresivos, un hogar disfuncional o el mejor de todos, si tú quieres ser una buena persona y superarte a ti mismo cada día lo conseguirás, Matilda y la señorita Miel son un ejemplo claro de eso.
