It's been a while since I shared a review with you, so today I want to talk about a wonderful book that I used to read to my daughters when they were little. It was lovely to rediscover it, at least digitally, because it's one of those books that sparks your imagination and transports you to fabulous scenes. And how could it not? It's by Roald Dahl, the same author of such famous works as Matilda and The Witches.
Hace tiempo que yo no compartía con ustedes una reseña, así que hoy quiero hablarles de un libro maravilloso que yo leía para mis hijas cuando estaban pequeñas, fue bonito reencontrarme con él al menos de forma digital, porque es de esos que activan tu imaginación y te trasladan a escenas fabulosas, y ¿Cómo no? Sí es de Roald Dahl, el mismo autor de obras tan célebres como Matilda y Las Brujas.
Just like Matilda, James is also an abused child in a world of adults. He lives with his aunts, who make his life miserable, and he has to live with them because his own parents died. Then one day, James meets a wise old man who gives him some special green seeds. These seeds later grow into a giant peach, which he uses to embark on an adventure. Inside the giant peach live several insects (a caterpillar, a spider, a grasshopper, an ant, a silkworm, and a centipede), and they are all eager to befriend James. They all set sail aboard the giant peach on a sea adventure, but along the way, they must overcome many dangers and challenges.
Tal como Matilda, James también es un niño maltratado en un mundo de adultos, él vive con sus tías que le hacen la vida imposible, y tiene que vivir con ellas porque sus propios padres murieron, hasta que un buen día James se encuentra con un sabio anciano que le regala unas semillas verdes especiales, estas semillas posteriormente se convirtieron en un melocotón gigante que más tarde él usó para embarcarse en una aventura. Dentro del melocotón gigante viven algunos insectos (una oruga, una araña, un saltamontes, una hormiga, un gusano de seda y un ciempiés) y todos están dispuestos a brindarle a James su amistad. Todos zarpan a bordo del melocotón gigante en una aventura por el mar, pero en la travesía tienen que sortear muchos peligros y desafíos
Despite being a children's book with a rather simple narrative, it is brimming with literary devices, especially hyperbole and anthropomorphism, and this is precisely what makes it so interesting, not only for children but for adults as well. The human characteristics the author bestows upon animals and the natural way of narrating something extraordinary are reminiscent of magical realism. But the most beautiful aspect is that the protagonist of this story, despite being an orphan who has had to cope with loneliness and abuse, managed to overcome all adversities and seize opportunities (I especially remember the chapter where he got rid of some sharks that were stalking them using his intelligence). So we can say that this book promotes empowerment and determination in children, teaching them that everyone has the capacity to succeed.
A pesar de ser un libro para niños que maneja una narrativa más bien simple, está llenísimo de recursos literarios, en especial la hipérbole y el antropomorfismo, y es precisamente esto lo que lo hace tan interesante, no solo para los niños sino para los adultos, esas características humanas que el autor le confiere a los animales y esa forma tan natural de narrar algo extraordinario recuerdan el realismo mágico, pero lo más hermoso es que el protagonista de esta historia, a pesar de ser un niño huérfano que ha tenido que lidiar con la soledad y el maltrato, supo superar todas las adversidades y aprovechar las oportunidades (recuerdo especialmente el capítulo donde se deshizo de uno tiburones que los acechaban usando su inteligencia) así que podemos decir que este libro promueve el empoderamiento y la determinación en los niños, les enseña que todos tienen la capacidad de salir adelante.
I see some similarities with Matilda, although the story is obviously very different, but I realize that in this book Roald Dahl also portrays adults as villains (of course, Matilda had its exceptions, like Mistress Honey, for example, and in this case, the old man who gave James the peach pits), but generally, the adult world is shown as complex, authoritarian, and generally evil: they establish absurd rules, coerce imagination, creativity, and joy in general. But in contrast, the peach pit insects become true friends, capable of providing all the affection, love, and recognition that James needs. And we adults who read the novel are able to find something more between the lines: that imagination and creativity can be crucial elements when it comes to solving problems.
Consigo algunas similitudes con Matilda, aunque obviamente la historia es muy diferente, pero me doy cuenta que en este libro Roal Dahl también retrata a los adultos como villanos (claro que en Matilda había sus excepciones, como la maestra miel, por ejemplo, y en este caso el anciano que entregó las semillas a James) pero por lo general el mundo de los adultos se muestra complejo, autoritario y malvado en términos generales: establecen reglas absurdas, coaccionan la imaginación, la creatividad y la alegría en general, pero en contraste con esto, los insectos del melocotón se convierten en verdaderos amigos, capaces de proveer todo el afecto, cariño y reconocimiento que James necesita. Y los adultos que leemos la novela somos capaces de encontrar algo más entre líneas, que la imaginación y la creatividad pueden ser elementos cruciales a la hora de resolver problemas.
The journey represents James's transformation from a helpless and sad boy into a joyful, empowered leader. The author's satirical and fantastical narrative makes the adventures these friends experience on their journey captivating, and it's impossible to get bored while reading this story; in the end, you're left with a feeling of hope and satisfaction.
El viaje representa la transformación de James, de alguien desvalido y triste en un niño líder, alegre y completamente empoderado. La narración del autor, satírica y fantástica hace que las aventuras que viven estos amigos durante su viaje sean fascinantes, y es imposible aburrirse cuando lees esta historia, al final te queda una sensación de esperanza y satisfacción
