I've finally finished reading another one of Jane Austen's wonderful novels, one of those that truly captivates you. Emma Woodhouse was a wealthy, beautiful, and very restless young socialite. She was romantic and imaginative, but despite that, she had never considered love for herself. Instead, she dedicated herself to organizing matches so her friends could find their ideal man. However, this sometimes led her to make mistakes and trigger misunderstandings. Nevertheless, when she was about to lose true love, Mr. Knightley, she was able to reach the emotional maturity she needed, leading her to reflect on true love, the kind that transcends interests and social standards.
Finalmente acabo de leer otra de las maravillosas novelas de Jane Austen, de esas que realmente enamoran. Emma Woodhouse era una jovencita de sociedad, adinerada, hermosa y muy inquieta, era romántica e imaginativa pero a pesar de eso nunca había pensado en el amor para sí misma, sino que se dedicaba a organizar encuentros para que sus amigas pudieran encontrar al hombre ideal, sin embargo esto a veces la llevaba a cometer errores y desencadenar malentendidos, no obstante, cuando ella estuvo a punto de perder el amor verdadero, el señor Knightley, pudo alcanzar la madurez emocional que necesitaba, llevándola a reflexionar sobre el verdadero amor, ese que estaba por encima de intereses y estándares sociales.
Emma was a young woman conditioned by her social circle; she had been trained for what was considered a woman's role. The ideal man (according to the concepts of the environment in which she moved) should be from an influential family, with a socially important profession, a man with money and refinement, someone who would make her feel proud. So she took these elements into account and analyzed them carefully, enjoying the process. However, fate itself showed her that feelings cannot be manipulated in any way. Love is an organic and noble feeling that cannot be measured or conditioned; it goes beyond social precepts, knows no status or surnames, it is simply two hearts beating in the same rhythm.
Emma era una joven condicionada por su círculo social, había sido entrenada para lo que se consideraba debía ser el rol de una mujer, el hombre ideal (según los conceptos del entorno en el que ella se desenvolvía) debía ser de familia influyente, con una profesión importante socialmente, un hombre con dinero y refinamiento, alguien que la hiciera sentir orgullosa, así que ella tomaba en cuenta estos elementos y los analizaba con cuidado, divirtiéndose en el proceso, sin embargo, el destino mismo le mostró que los sentimientos no pueden ser manipulados de ningún modo, el amor es un sentimiento orgánico y noble, que no puede ser medido o condicionado, va más allá de preceptos sociales, no conoce de estatus o apellidos, simplemente se trata de dos corazones que laten en un mismo compás.
The entire book is narrated from the protagonist's perspective, allowing us to witness both her mistakes and her evolution. Through Emma, as with many other characters in her novels, Jane Austen seeks to reflect the social pressures of the Georgian and Regency eras, which spanned the late 18th and early 19th centuries in England. During this time, feelings were practically relegated to a secondary role; everything revolved around political and social interests. People were expected to act according to the expectations of their family, the church, and society. Feelings were not genuine, and anyone who expressed their feelings was seen as an oddity. Thus, Emma's somewhat burdensome attitude is perhaps a way of satirizing this obsession with marriage.
Todo el libro está narrado desde la perspectiva de la protagonista, lo cuál nos permite ir viendo tanto sus errores como su evolución. A través de Emma, al igual que de muchos otros personajes en otras novelas, Jane Austen busca reflejar la presión social de la época Georgiana y la Era de la Regencia que abarcaban el final del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX en Inglaterra, donde prácticamente los sentimientos eran relegados a un segundo plano, todo se trataba de intereses políticos o sociales, la gente debía actuar según lo que esperaba su familia, la iglesia y la sociedad, los sentimientos no eran genuinos y si alguien decía lo que sentía era visto como un bicho raro, así que la actitud un tanto pesada de Emma es tal vez una manera de satirizar esa obsesión por el matrimonio.
And although Emma at the beginning does not seem to be a protagonist like all the others of Jane Austen (different and misunderstood) through her own evolution she experiences what it is to have an authentic feeling, to let herself be carried away by her own emotions and not what is expected of her, so she ends up being a character with character.
Y a pesar de que Emma al inicio no parece ser una protagonista como todas las demás de Jane Austen (diferente e incomprendida) a través de su propia evolución ella experimenta lo que es tener un sentimiento autentico, dejarse llevar por sus propias emociones y no lo que se espera de ella, así que termina siendo un personaje con carácter.
I truly enjoyed reading this novel and I absolutely recommend it. It's one of those books that captivates you with its genuine charm and teaches you to appreciate the social freedom you have today. De verdad que me disfruté muchísimo la lectura de esta novela y por supuesto que la recomiendo, es de esas que enamoran con un encanto genuino, te enseñan a valorar la libertad social que tienes en la actualidad. Excelente elección de lectura, y has tocado los puntos fundamentales del tema de la novela.
A mí en particular me gustan las novelas de época como esa, si bien es posible resulten más aburridas para los jóvenes de hoy en día con otros intereses.
Sólo faltó mencionar que esta, como otras obras de Austen, ha sido llevada tanto a cine como a televisión.
Me parece vi una versión de 2020 hace un tiempo, existen otras más también, esa de 2020 tira más a comedia moderna.
La película tiene gran calidad visual, como si viéramos una sucesión de cuadros; se me parece en ese punto a algunas otras películas ambientadas más o menos en la misma época.
Creo recordar una sobre Madame du Barry con una estética bastante parecida. La de Madame du Barry es más reciente y la protagoniza Johnny Depp.

Muchísimas gracias, me alegra que te haya gustado. Es cierto, probablemente resulten un tanto aburridas para los lectores más jóvenes, aunque he notado recientemente mucha atracción por algunas de las novelas de Austen, en especial pro Orgullo y Prejuicio.
La verdad es que no sabía que había películas sobre Emma, aunque lo suponía, tengo que verlas 😊
Hi! What a lovely review you've written! I confess that, although everyone raves about Jane Austen, "Emma" is one of her classics that I still haven't read. I'm really intrigued by what you say about the protagonist; the idea of her playing matchmaker for her friends while ignoring her own feelings sounds like a recipe for disaster (and quite entertaining to read, actually 😅). I really like how you describe her evolution, because at first it seems a bit superficial with all the social status stuff, but it's great to know that the book takes you on that journey of growing up.
Yes, that's one of the most beautiful things about her as a writer, the way she makes her characters evolve within the universe of her stories. Emma had a very interesting transition to adulthood.
