[Book Review] The Cursed Clock of Guigue ESP/ENG

I honestly don't think I've ever been so pleased and proud to share a book review with you all, but this time I can finally tell you about a very special book because it was written by none other than my oldest daughter, who has loved writing since she was very young. She's also a member of hive, and in fact, it's thanks to her that I was inspired to become part of this wonderful ecosystem. Her username is @mairene1, and I was actually there with her at the presentation of this book, and it was a wonderful moment that filled my soul.
Sinceramente creo que jamás he estado tan complacida y orgullosa de compartir una reseña literaria con todos ustedes, pero es que en esta ocasión finalmente puedo hablarles de un libro muy especial porque fue escrito nada más y nada menos que por mi hija mayor, a quién le gusta escribir desde muy pequeña. Ella también forma parte de hive y de hecho es gracias a ella que me animé a formar parte de este maravilloso ecosistema, su nombre de usuario es @mairene1, y de hecho cuando ella tuvo la presentación de este libro yo estuve allí con ella y fue un momento maravilloso que llenó mi alma.
The book, available in digital format for now, is called The Cursed Clock of Guigue and is based on a local legend from a town quite close to ours. In the town of Güigüe, there is a beautiful clock, highly ornate but also equipped with some very useful implements such as a weather vane, a barometer, and a thermometer. However, none of these clocks work, as every time a watchmaker tries to repair it, he ends up dead for some strange and unknown reason.
El libro está en formato digital por ahora, se llama El Reloj Maldito de Guigue y está basado en una leyenda local de una ciudad bastante cercana a la nuestra. En la ciudad de Güigüe se encuentra un precioso reloj, muy ornamentado pero además dotado con algunos implementos muy útiles como una veleta, barómetro y un termómetro, sin embargo nada de esto funciona, ya que las veces que algún relojero intenta repararlo termina muerto por alguna extraña y desconocida razón.
Knowing this, in 2013, a Swiss watchmaker named Crónidas Piaget traveled to Venezuela to try to find out a little more about this watch in order to try to repair it, however he receives many warnings not to do so, and even begins to have some visions, sensations and even premonitory dreams that unfortunately do not make him give up his company, since he is a skeptical man and in fact believes he has a logical explanation for all the deaths of the watchmakers who perished in different eras, so he takes some precautions and sets out to work on the repair, but an unexpected event gets in the way.
Sabiendo esto, en el año 2013, un relojero Suizo de nombre Crónidas Piaget viajó hasta Venezuela para intentar averiguar un poco más sobre este reloj para intentar repararlo, sin embargo él recibe muchas advertencias para que no lo haga, e incluso comienza a tener algunas visiones, sensaciones y hasta sueños premonitorios que lamentablemente no lo hacen desistir de su empresa, ya que él es un hombre escéptico y de hecho cree tener una explicación lógica para todas las muertes de los relojeros que perecieron en épocas distintas, de modo que toma algunas precauciones y se dispone a trabajar en la reparación, pero un evento inesperado se interpone.
The novel has an undeniable undertone of mystery that runs throughout the plot and makes it very interesting, but what I like most is that it's not the typical legends or fantastic tales of ghosts that are often heard in Venezuela, but rather a little-known legend that has truly baffled a population. On the other hand, I was also struck by the fact that it has moments of respite from the tension generated by the mystery, and these are a kind of window to freedom in which we can see the other side of the population, the beautiful and pleasant side. The book also serves to expose the culture of our country and highlight our idiosyncrasies, not only by talking about a legend of our own, but because within its pages we can witness the hospitality of the Venezuelan people and the pride they feel in sharing their culture.
La novela tiene un innegable tilde de misterio que acompaña toda la trama y la vuelve muy interesante, pero lo que más me gusta es que no se trata de las típicas leyendas o cuentos fantásticos de espectros de los que a menudo se escucha en Venezuela, sino que se trata de una leyenda poco conocida que de verdad ha desconcertado a una población, por otra parte también me llamó la atención que tiene momentos de descanso de la tensión que genera el misterio, y estos son una especie de ventana a la libertad en la que podemos ver el otro lado de la población, la parte hermosa y agradable. El libro además sirve para exponer la cultura de nuestro país y resaltar nuestra idiosincrasia, no solo por hablar de una leyenda propia, sino porque entre sus páginas podemos ser testigos de la hospitalidad del venezolano y el orgullo que siente al compartir su cultura.
Something that really surprised me while reading was finding a character inspired by my husband—in fact, it is him, so I feel like it was a nice tribute from my daughter. He's the taxi driver who drives Cronidas (the protagonist) on his investigative trips. The interaction between these two characters is very pleasant, and there's a lot of interesting and enjoyable feedback. This allows us to discover a little more about the man behind the watchmaker, what his interests are, what he's really looking for. But now that I think about it, even my other daughter and I had a small part in this book, a "cameo," as they call it in movies 😊, and for me it was something very exciting and special.
Algo que me sorprendió mucho mientras leía fue encontrar a un personaje que está inspirado en mi esposo, de hecho es él, así que siento que fue un lindo homenaje de parte de mi hija, se trata del taxista que traslada a Crónidas (el protagonista) en sus recorridos de investigación. La interacción entre estos dos personajes es muy grata y hay una gran retroalimentación que resulta interesante y amena, esto nos permite descubrir un poco más al hombre detrás del relojero, cuáles son sus intereses, qué es lo que realmente busca. Pero ahora que lo recuerdo, incluso mi otra hija y yo tuvimos una pequeña participación en este libro, un “cameo” como le llaman en cine 😊, y para mi fue algo muy emocionante y especial
Throughout the book we also get to know each of the characters who died trying to repair the mysterious clock and how they died, what motivated them to make the repair, this makes us empathize with them, therefore I found in the narrative a very good development of characters, which are not placed at random in the story but have a purpose, none of them are the same as the other, they are all different, even when they have the same way of seeing life.
A lo largo del libro también vamos conociendo a cada uno de los personajes que fallecieron intentando reparar el misterioso reloj y como fueron sus muertes, qué los motivó a hacer la reparación, esto nos hace empatizar con ellos, por lo tanto encontré en la narrativa un muy buen desarrollo de personajes, los cuales no están puestos al azar en el relato sino que tienen un propósito, ninguno de ellos es igual al otro, todo son diferentes, incluso cuando tienen el mismo modo de ver la vida.
The handling of suspense and terror is very good, the story generates tension in just the right measure and is not predictable at all, in fact throughout the reading it was impossible for me to decipher whether the protagonist would live or die in the end, or if he is right or not in his conjectures, and when I got to the end I found myself with a shocking scene of which I can only say that it made me jump on several occasions, and that is despite the fact that I am not easily impressed.
El manejo del suspenso y el terror es muy bueno, la historia genera tensión en su justa medida y no resulta predecible en lo absoluto, de hecho a lo largo de toda la lectura me resultó imposible descifrar si el protagonista viviría o moriría al final de cuentas, o si él tiene razón o no en sus conjeturas, y cuando llegué al final me encontré con una escena impactante de la cuál solo puedo decir que me hizo sobresaltar en varias ocasiones, y eso que no soy fácilmente impresionable.
I just have to thank my daughter for including me in her story and congratulate her through this medium for daring to take the step of officially becoming a writer. The book is full of nuances and vibrant emotions that even lead us to introspection in the search for who we really are and what motivates us to achieve our goals: personal satisfaction? Fame? Pride? Nobility? In short, I am truly happy to have read it and even more happy to have shared it with all of you.
Tan solo me queda agradecer a mi hija por incluirme en su historia y felicitarla también a través de este medio por atreverse a dar el paso de convertirse oficialmente en escritora. El libro está lleno de matices y emociones vibrantes que incluso nos llevan a la introspección en la búsqueda de quienes somos realmente y qué nos motiva a alcanzar los objetivos ¿satisfacción personal? ¿Fama? ¿Orgullo? ¿Nobleza? En fin, de verdad que estoy muy feliz de haberlo leído y aún más de haberlo compartido con todos ustedes.
