Down The Long Pier

Down The Long Pier

From the top of the long pier wide sea has opened in the horizon together with the sky above. I was kind of the award after the long walk while the cold mountain wind was hitting the defiant faces with the intention to walk all the way no matter what happens. With this kind of intention, the purpose, the mission & the goals are (almost) always achieved!

This sight was the award of going all the way defying the natural forces of wind & cold. But not only reward, there was much more happening inside.

The long pier is locally called Molo longo what in Italian mean exactly long pier. It is open for public so & even presented as the tourist attraction cause Rijeka doesn't really have a promenade so the pier turned out to have multiple functions & one of them is leisure, except many maritime activities.

Lately port of Rijeka is being revitalized into its true purpose - to become a real import-export point in the Northern Adriatic sea.

The real beauty of Molo longo is that it gives a great view over almost the whole city, especially the center. That day many ships were in the port & almost all the cranes were moving & working, emptying the ships or filling them up with the new cargo. All the time the wind was mercilessly slapping our faces & freezing our hands. I needed to shoot quickly & again hide my hands in the pockets to warm them up again. I had with me only the macro lens so I was planning to shoot only details but than I realized how great are the general light conditions so I took many other shots.

The strange shaped gray building is a silo. Behind it is the main railway station. I admire how well planned & built was the infrastructure - the port, the silo & the railway all at one place directly connected.

How many goods are being smuggled here, some legally, some illegally...?!

Cranes & skyscrapers

Usually the skyscrapers look huge but next to this gigantic ship, they even look small.

Details

To catch the details, a photographer needs to walk slower. All the others were far in front. Maybe already reached the end of the pier & enjoying the sunshine hidden from the wind. Nevertheless, the details were caught. The surface stepped on by the numerous feet over the time, along with all sorts of vehicles driven across, was covered by stone cubes. It seems like no concrete was added to connect the cubes better to one another but maybe it was really there, only due to the weather condition during the long period of time, all the concrete disappeared.

Stone cubes on the floor

Nets are inevitable tools in the port arsenal. Sometimes they are set to create strange patterns, chaotic patterns. They also give another detail to capture.

Plastic spheres on rope in the fisherman net

Another inevitable accessory are ropes. Ropes everywhere you look! Ropes tying boats, ropes holding nets, ropes developing sails...

_0Z66387.jpg
Ropes tightly holding boats

The new modern age bring tones of plastic & so are the boxes for fish bodies. The last resting place for dying fish violently taken from the sea media & suffocating in plastic. Dying to become carcasses for human food & consumption. I surely ain't eating that!

Plastic fish boxes

The sea surface cannot be avoided in searching for details. It is full of details, changing details. It captures the movement of the wind & it adjusting itself under the hits of air. It seems soft & intelligent when not confronting but accepting the blows.

_0Z66395.jpg
Sea surface is the moment where the sea medium touches the air medium. The wind plays with the sea so the surface changes the look.

_0Z66406.jpg
On the other side of the pier, protected from the direct wind, the sea surface looked again differently.

Rewards

Finally reaching the end of the pier was the time for deserved rest, contemplation, shooting to mesmerize those moments, absorbing the Sun light & gathering the strength to walk back.

Recently I realized that Maria is a perfect model! She looks good in the photos in any situation & she's not shy in front of the camera.

_0Z66397.jpg

Very soon few bravest of us started removing our clothes & getting ready for a swim. Maria was the bravest & she first went for a swim. Soon after her Matej went too. The rest of us stayed on the safe, dry dock.

Another reward was to have a peak on a beautiful woman's body together with the admiration how the woman was the first & the bravest among us. You also came to the end of this blog post of mine so you can also enjoy the view.

As I am never discriminating, I'm showing Matej too, who also went swimming - a man's body.

I believe the sea is still not so cold but outside, on the air, especially with cold mountain wind blowing, was definitely cold! This year I've been bathing most often in the cold waters, like never before in my life. The cold waters therapy brings a lot of benefits. It stops all thoughts in brain & the focus redirects on mere survival. The breathing changes too, firstly becoming very fast & later with consciousness one is able to control it & calm down. It promotes blood circulation & along with it functioning of all organs & the body as a whole. Did you ever try swimming in cold waters?

The upper shots I made with Nikon Z6 & Sigma 105 mm DG Macro HSM. For the self-portrait below I used the older Nikon D800 & Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70 mm lens.
