WhatsApp to Start Showing More Ads

I hope the worst doesn't happen otherwise I might just be forced to use another instant messenger. Ads can pop up anywhere but on an instant messenger, that feels wrong in so many ways.

I read in the news that WhatsApp is adding more advertising to the app, but there is no need to panic and be worried your private messages are still safe. Because usually when a platform has ads, it does everything to Make it targeted or personalized to have more effect and that would mean collecting data. So it's obvious you may be thinking about whether or not they're reading your chats. They're not. If anything, I think it's the link to Facebook or even the status you post that could be seen. I may be wrong though.

Anyways, the ads will not show in your chats. You will see the ads in the Updates tab located at the bottom of the app.

Meta, which as you know owns WhatsApp, says it will not read your messages to determine ads or suggest ads, so to avoid getting sued they won't touch your private stuff. Instead, they are going to consider your current location, your language choice, and how you use WhatsApp. I don't know what they meant by how we use WhatsApp but it better not be data.

Meta noted that if WhatsApp is connected with Facebook or Instagram, a user may see an increase in personalized ads.

Businesses will be able to pay for advertising posts in the Updates window. Other businesses can charge users for additional content. WhatsApp will only take a small cut from those sales. Sometimes we see ads as an annoyance but if you think as a developer, you see the need for it because if you want to offer a service for free and still generate revenue, it's going to have to be ads.

Some users have concerns that WhatsApp will start to feel like Facebook. Many users in the UK and Europe may have a negative reception to all these changes. WhatsApp has indicated that if this is a messaging service for the user as intended there should be no ad appearing in the user’s inbox. They would need to implement this with great caution and precision so users don't get pissed off and move from the platform like what happened with X.

This is a significant change no doubt, it will be interesting to see how people react to this change.
