FIRST DAY OUT OF THE BIRD'S NEST

Immediately as the bus came to stop the passengers began to file out of the bus. Some where pushing one another out of impatience. I waited until I saw that more than half of the passengers were out before I finally got up from my window seat to come out of the bus. I walked to back of the bus and was not surprised to see that the driver had already brought down all the luggages he had carried at the back through the journey from yenagoa to amassoma. I thanked the driver and carried my luggage to give the other passengers space to carry theirs, but when they took theirs they didn't say thank you which I thought was weird but didn't say much about.

I had gained admission at Niger Delta University and this was the first day I was resuming school which was a Saturday. I could feel the excitement bubbling in my veins but then there was a bit of fear in me. I had never been away from home before so this was a first for me. My family was no longer a stone throw away from me anymore, I was officially alone in the real world,I was like a fish out of water.

I took out my phone and called the girl I was supposed to share housing with for her to come pick me up. I called the first time but she didn't pick up, I called again but she didn't pick up either, It was when I called the third time that I began to worry. My facial expression began to change from excited to worried, I waited for a few minutes and then called two more times but she didn't pick up. Suddenly the weather began to change from sunny to something else.
" Please not now" I said

I had no idea what to do next, my first day in school and I was already in crisis. I thought about calling home for help but then I changed my mind. I was a university babe now, I can't be calling home so soon what would happen to my steeze.

I stood there for almost half an hour without any clue what to do, I didn't want to ask any stranger for help because it was all bus drivers that were around me and I had heard stories about things happening to people to people that " did not know road" and I didn't want that to happen to me. Then it began to rain heavily and I was getting drenched under it. I searched for the nearest shelter I could find and ran into a small kiosk shop that had less customers. I was so upset at both my roommate and the weather. how can I prove that I'm a big girl that can take care of herself when I can't even solve small housing issue.

I was trying to dry my drenched body with my hands when the lady at kiosk shop walked up to me and said

" Fyn gal you be fresher abi"

" Yes ma, good afternoon" I replied

" I see you stand there before since, you know where you won go?" She asked again

I stared at her judging her appearance, she looked approachable and nice and so I decided to be friendly too.

" No ma, I don't. I tried calling my roommate but she's not picking up" I said, finally telling someone about my dilemma.

" But do you know the name of the place"

" Yes ma"
I told he the name of the place and then her eyes flashed with recognition.

" I know there now, just wait when the rain is over I will direct you."

When the rain stopped she finally gave me directions and then I hopped on a bike with my wet bags and drenched clothes.
When I got to the place I was so excited but then I had another problem. I had no idea which one was my flat. On the bright side I was no longer at the park anymore looking like a lost puppy. I thought about what to do next until I came up with an idea. I would just knock an any flat and tell them my roommates name then ask which one was her flat.
I paid the bike man then suddenly my phone rang, it was my roommate.

" I'm so sorry, I was charging my phone" she said

I wanted to yell at her but I was holding back my anger. we can't be having problems when we've not even started living together.

" I'm already at the place, just come out and show me the flat" I said in a calm voice.

She was surprised I had already found the place so soon. When we got into the house, I quickly took off my drenched clothes and changed into dry ones and dropped on the bed like a log of wood. The whole day was tedious.

Sounds like a stressful start to your time at University. The transition and adjustment to living away from home is challenging enough without having communication issues thrown in too! At least you had a sensible head on your shoulders and kept calm, enabling you to resolve your dilemma safely.

Your piece was nicely structured but would have benefited from an edit to identify and correct spelling mistakes and issues with grammar and punctuation. These issues impacted the curation rewards available to you. I suggest using Grammarly on your next piece, but ONLY to correct spelling errors, punctuation, and minor problems with grammar. Don't be tempted to use it for rephrasing or fluency as this can lead to a piece being identified as AI-generated and overlooked for curation.

Maybe it is a bit hasty to say that I understand 100% your narration, because it has also happened to me that the first day of my university I was nervous, since I was thinking about the room I had rented near the university and that maybe they may be stealing my things while I was studying, plus I did not have any acquaintances, it is as if I was being on another planet, but on that same day I met again with a schoolmate with whom we shared the house but different rooms and I felt very calm to find a familiar face. 🤓

Thank you for sharing your experience in the community

I remember my first day in college as a student I also felt stressed and confused. Thank goodness there are still supportive and good people who were able to guide you. Regards
