WHY SOCIETY NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION MORE
Hello #scifimultiverse, trust your week is going well. I welcome you to my blog.

Depression is real, and it’s become more visible than ever. It is a situation of hopelessness, a continuous state of pity, worry, loss, defeat, emptiness, unhappiness, and what have you. This happens when people write themselves off because of maltreatment, negative feelings about a thing, fear of the unknown, or repeated failure.

In society, not all hands are equal; there are some deficiencies here and there, some are struggling with challenges like obesity, different deformities from childbirth, poverty, and other health challenges. This set of people wants to be treated fairly, just like every other normal individual, but rather than getting that fair treatment, they get discrimination, bullying, and all sorts of body shaming, leading to depression.

Furthermore, some go into depression because of greed, lack of self-control, and contentment. Such ones lose it because of the kind of friends they keep, the things they see, and where they go. Those in this category impose this stigma on themselves. However, they also need love and care to debrief from such stigma safely and reintroduced to society.

Additionally, we have another set of depressions that comes from the social media space. When one allows oneself to get deeply engrossed with the fake lifestyle on social media platforms, peer pressure or even parental push to do as others are doing to either get married or get rich quickly, without knowing their foundation.

Oftentimes, people are afraid to talk about this stigma because of the fear of further bullying, victimisation, intimidation, and shame. Most of the time, they keep quiet, thinking nobody will believe or be interested in their story. Some of them will believe that it is too late to talk about it.

This happened around me, where a girl was being molested by an adult. She went to her mother and told her, only for the woman to shut her up and warn her never to raise such issues. She went to some elderly women around and told them only for them to push her back to her mum. Frustrated without solace, she continued to bear that pain until she slipped into depression and became mentally disturbed. It was at that point that everything was blown up. The man himself became critically ill and died after a few weeks.

Assuming there were open conversations between the lady’s family and the man, she probably wouldn’t slip into mental issues caused by prolonged depression. Maybe the man, too, would have been saved. Open and honest conversation reveals their wounds and pouring their hearts to activate the healing process. Again, therapy and counselling or speaking to a confidant or loved one provides the needed support and healing.

In conclusion, we need to be checking our loved ones through phone calls, SMS, and any other platforms, watch their moods, and listen to their complaints whenever there is one. Also, encourage each other, give fair treatment without discrimination, because no one knows the pain of another. But by constantly being our brothers' keepers and not overstepping our boundaries, we will make the world a better place where love, open and clear conversation thrives rather than mockery, bullying, body shaming, and intimidation.
