Sitting at the dining table that afternoon, I heard someone’s voice soliloquising: Horseshoe, hian, Horseshoe, huh, she asked me to help her with the Horseshoe, but what is a Horseshoe? if you ask me, who will I ask? And now she will start abusing me again. Mtchew, I am tired of staying with this woman. Maybe it is time for me to go back to the village.

I was keen, listening to Nneoma, speaking to herself without even realising that someone was sitting at the dining table. A minute down the drain, Neoma was still soliloquising. Then, I interrupted her, Neoma, what is going on? I enquired.

Nneoma: Aunty Chinwe asked me to assist her with the Horseshoe she bought yesterday. I searched the whole shoe rack for the Horseshoe, but I couldn't find it. Do you know the colour she bought and where I can get it from?

Then I responded, did you know what a Horseshoe meant or looked like?

Nneoma responded with a no, but stated she thought her aunt bought a new pair of shoes.

I quickly corrected and explained to her what a Horseshoe meant and that her aunt wanted to use it as a decorative craft item in the living room.
Mhummm, Nneoma heaved a sigh of relief and walked to the kitchen like a hero, picked the Horseshoes from her aunt’s market basket and came back with them. Happily, she gave her aunt the Horseshoe, feeling like a champion who won a match.
