The price we all pay for a Nation's Bad Reputation

One of the questions I hate being asked is Which country are you from? Yes, I am ashamed of my country because some people judge us before getting to know us. The moment strangers ask that question and you answer, it is the end!

People don't want to do anything with Nigerians because of the scam rate from the country, and it has cost some Nigerians a lot, especially those searching for remote jobs; they often lose job offers from other countries just for being a Nigerian.

I heard a story about a guy who lost a 2k dollars per month gig because he was from Nigeria. This is just the story we heard; there are more that we didn't know about, but are we to blame those who deny them the opportunity? Of course, no! They are just protecting themselves cos it is true that the rate of crime in my country is high and they don't know who is who.

Gone are the days when children went to school with the dream of building a career. Today, many are only focused on making quick money by any means; they avoid honest work and prefer to scam and squander their earnings.

The government is not helping the situation. The EFCC and other task forces set up to curb fraud are themselves deeply corrupt. When they seize money from a fraudster, the right thing to do would be to investigate and trace the victims so the money can be returned. Instead, they confiscate the money and share it among themselves. I honestly wonder what difference there is between them and the fraudsters they claim to be fighting.

A recent scam happened on Hive involving a lady who deceived people by claiming her mother was sick. She scammed many users and even took loans from some, only for it to be discovered later that everything was a lie from the start. She played with people's emotions just to make money, and sadly, she won't be the only one to face the consequences.

When I heard about it, I said Fuck it! Because she has ruined our already damaged reputation further, she is from Nigeria; her actions have made things harder for other Nigerians who genuinely need help. When a sincere Nigerian comes out to seek assistance, people may no longer trust them, all because of what she did.

So yeah, if there is one bad thing they know Nigeria for, it is scam! And the good thing? Honestly, I can't think of any because if the country is good, most of our citizens won't want to leave. How many UK citizens wish to relocate to Nigeria, or how many Spaniards want to do that? This alone is proof.

No one wants to live in Hell or have their name linked to it, but Nigeria isn't hell or close to hell, it is just being managed by people who act like they belong there...

A few rotten potatoes spoil the whole bag. High government officials are the head of the problem that needs to be cut off. Grassroot fraud will continue as long as it's done in a bigger fashion by elected officials. Always hope for the better though.
