Public holidays in Nigeria: Too small or just Right?
Hello Learners
Holidays are days that we all eagerly anticipate. They are the good moments that help us break free from work and school-related issues.

As much as we love those holidays, there don't seem to be many of them. Here in my country, we have fewer than ten holidays in a year that I can remember...
New Year's Day - Jan 1st: This marks the beginning of a new day on the calendar, and it is declared as a holiday for all to enjoy, celebrate, and dine with family.
Worker's Day - 1st May: This is a day set to celebrate workers all over the country and a day everyone looks up to as well.
Democracy Day - June 12: This is to honor one of our past leaders who was denied his right after winning the election fairly, his name is M.K.O. Abiola, he fought for Democracy, but unfortunately, he was arrested and died in prison. The day is to remember him.
Independence Day - Oct 1st: Many people are familiar with this holiday as it happens in all countries that gained freedom from their colonial masters. Although the date may be different in each country.

Christmas Day - December 25: This is another popular holiday in the world, it is the day set to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the son of God, even though it is not written in the bible the day he was born, but most countries pick December 25 to celebrate his birth.
Boxing Day - December 26: I used to think Boxing Day is all about fighting and also wonder why it is so close to Christmas Day, it took years before I knew the reason and what the boxing entails... Boxing Day is not a day to fight boxing like I used to think, but a day to gift others; the boxing indicates a box of gifts. Back in the days, churches would open their donation boxes and give what was there to those in need, and also the rich and people who had things to give chose that day to reward others and their workers too.
We have other holiday periods like Good Friday, easter monday, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Kabir, but these days are not fixed, so we can't say a particular date for them.
When it comes to judging if the holidays are too much or small, it depends on the individual, business owners won't want more holidays because they want their workers to work for the money they are paying, entrepreneurs also won't want mre holidays cos they want to fill their bags daily but these set of people can easily give themselves a break from work if they need to, unlike those working for them, those people would wish for more holiday.

Thanks for the insight about boxing day, still thought it was about actually throwing punches before reading this post lol. Most employees will indeed prefer more public holidays, that's how they'll get more breaks on their work schedule and spend the time to rest or engage into something they're interested in.
On the other hand, Colombia (in SouthAmerica) has one of the biggest number of public holidays in the world (18) ,plus a lot of "long weekends" (mondays off due to a carnival or celebration). This is very costly for economy and the root of many other problems like lazyness, parties and alcohol & drugs' adictions, fights and intolerance just to mention some.
We have few public holidays in this country for real, I would really appreciate more 🙃.
Like you wrote it all depends on individuals and their respective jobs, like working in a school vacations are also holidays to me 😊.
I think everyone want's holiday if they are employee and It's quite natural. I think in my country there are enough holiday for us.
