Celebrating the season without hurting your pocket

It is the end of the year, and people would love to celebrate. The idea is good, but imo it becomes bad when they are ready to go to any length just to make it happen.

Just last week, someone was in search of where he could borrow 100k, and when asked the reason, he wanted to buy a bag of rice and some other things to send to his father's house as part of his contribution for the end-of-the-year gathering...

I know his action would make sense to some people who also do it, but in my opinion, sending stuff home for the end-of-the-year party is a good thing to do, but doing it at the cost of your nuclear family is bad, cos is he going to borrow another money to feed his family after spending such huge amount just for the family party, the problem is not the amount he spent, it is that he doesn't have the money and had to borrow it.

Many people complain that January is always dry, yet they empty their bank accounts and savings to celebrate. They forget the money won't grow back on its own, and this is why we need a proper budget to have fun and celebrate Christmas and New Year, and still have enough to guide us in the new year.

A few years ago, when I was still a bachelor, I didn't celebrate Christmas or New Year cos I don't really like party things, I prefer staying in my room doing what I love, listening to music or playing games, rather than going out to dance and merry with others. Things have changed now, and I can't force my way on others, so Christmas would start being a thing in my home, but it would strictly be on a budget that won't hurt my pocket.

My Ideal way of celebrating the end of the year festivities without hurting my pocket

Food

This is the most important when it comes to celebration, Christmas ain't Christmas without jollof, fried or white rice, and chicken...

I came from a muslim background, so I still remember how we used to give food to our Christian neighbour during Sallah and how they also gave us food during Christmas. Still, things have changed now; everyone is suspicious of one another, and that culture of giving food is dying, or maybe it is just in my area.

On Christmas Day, we will be preparing jollof rice a bit more than the family can eat cos of my guest, and there will be drinks too

Christmas Cloth

I am not a fan of buying new clothes for festive days like Christmas and New Year, but wifey and child want. Christmas clothes are a necessity if you want peace to reign in your home as a family man, I bet you don't want your children looking sad when they see their peers in new clothes... My boy is still very young, but we can start from here. I have already gotten them their wears, since things can be so costly this December.

Things I won't do

Bangers/knockout: I am not going to waste my money on bangers and knockout to celebrate this season. I can't imagine buying a knockout of 3000 Naira just to hear some sounds. I see it as burning money, and I would not partake in that, every penny counts.

Going for Carnivals: There are a lot of carnivals that will happen this season, but I won't attend any. This is not because of the budget; I just don't like parties, and anywhere they are doing such, it will be hard to see me there.

With the first two things I mentioned above available[food and cloth], Christmas is done, nothing extraordinary that will take more money from me, and I won't be among those complaining in January that their pocket is dry cos I didn't burn my money nor did I host a party beyond my power.

Not good I don't like make debt or being forced to ask for money because I use it for a celebration party or for making gifts. By the way during this season it's hard because some families really care a lot about big parties and gifts.

Loan should only be taken for emergency or investment , and party doesn’t fall into any of the two categories so not right to loan money for it .

As for families that love parties and gift, it is a good thing as long as they can afford it .

We must be wise when it comes to spending during Christmas, when you start going for extravagant things, then you know you're going overboard, prioritising necessity such as family and food is the best way towards having a budget friendly celebration.

If you don't buy Christmas cloths for children, you won't hear word oo😃, there are just important basics to do for the celebration without over stretching ourselves financially
January looks like 90 days oo😃

Festival season cost some extra money and I can understand it that it's good enjoy the festival season but we should not spend too much money for festival for what we need to suffer after that. We need to be cautious.

The unnecessary pressure people put themselves to celebrate Christmas or impress others, that's something I dislike.
It's important to have avoid pressure and competition.

Spend wisely, celebration never ends.

Thanks for sharing.
