When Games Waste Your Time Through Pointless Gatekeeping
I enjoy games that are challenging and make you think of unique strategies to overcome obstacles. It's fun and rewarding. Many games make money from ads, while others encourage you to make in-game purchases. This can be in the form of new characters, gear, upgrades, etc., to help you progress through the game faster.
It's not a novel idea, but it works. Often, players can make purchases and speed up their progress. Sometimes, you'll hit content that is blocked until you unlock specific champions, and I detest it. What I hate even more is when specific content is gatekept by specific champions AND unrealistic stat requirements for them.
I play a game called Raid: Shadow Legends, and this boss is the poster child for this nonsense.

The only way to beat this boss is to have very specific champions with unrealistic levels of speed and accuracy. It would likely take many players years to acquire everything needed to beat him and all for some missions to get a free legendary champion. After that, most people don't even bother farming this particular dungeon because most of the gear you get from it is crap. You can typically buy better pieces through the marketplace on the main page, rather than waste in-game energy and time getting garbage.
I have the champs to do it, but I lack the ridiculous stats to beat it. It's obnoxious because at this point, there's very little strategy to beat him other than just outspeeding him and freezing him. The speed is all based on random luck, so there's not even a challenge there. I hate when content is locked out for the majority of players because of poor game design. Game companies need to do better.

I love it when games (not just mobile games) do their marketing based on the dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay they'll give you; then the majority of those hours are things like forcing the player character to work painfully slowly through certain segments (As thought to enforce the impact of the story beats at that time) - when allowing the player to "See" or rather be "shown" the impact through their own eyes.
When games take away agency to extend their play time, it isn't quality gaming time, or good game design.
My favourite games have none of that crap; they're all about how I am interacting with the world and what I am experiencing at a given moment.
This is why I never play mobile games. They're all badly designed with no intent outside of making money. They're not art.
Yeah, some people enjoy the grind, but I don't. I understand there has to be some to make it competitive, but a lot of companies take it to extremes.

I've been playing Path of Exile 2 quite a bit lately, and I can't believe how much I die compared to other games like Diablo. It's ridiculous, but it keeps me coming back, so I guess I can't really complain!
Yeah, this one just has me irritated because the requirements aren't very realistic. I'll just have to come back to it later, but I hate when companies do stuff like this.

I understand!
I hear you!
Because I tend to be a cheapskate, I hate it when games (claiming you can ALWAYS play for free, once you buy the initial game) are designed in such a way that there are — in essence — virtual paywalls, in the sense that it becomes all but impossible to progress beyond a certain point unless you buy some upgrade that just "happens to be on amazing sale right now for $19.95, and if you order two, we'll send you this AMAZING 99pc tool set for absolutely FREE! Just add $29.95 for shipping and handling..."
Wait... WHAT?
Yeah, that's never a good way to retain players. They'll eventually leave out of frustration.

I don't even waste my time with these games anymore, I know they're designed to lock you into a part and force you to insert money to speed up or pass a complicated boss like that.
I've only played the Hive games and Delta Force on steam, a shooting game, a battlefield for "free", if you want to spend money just to get skins. The time I play these web2 games I'd rather invest in hive, at least here we get something haha
Good point. Yeah, I've started getting back into posting more and doing more things on-chain and spending less time in the game, since there's not as much to do.
