Greetings again, community! This week, for our community engagement challenge, we're invited to share a card that many underestimate or that few know about. Splinterlands certainly has a huge number of cards, many of them, though older, very useful. For this post, I want to focus on a group of cards that, while they're a few years old, are still usable in the Modern format. Believe it or not, there's a group of cards that, regardless of the time that passes, remain a viable option in Modern, and with the recent meta shift resulting from the Conclave set, these cards are beginning to have a significant utility they didn't have before. I'm referring to the Gladiator cards.
Saludos nuevamente apreciada comunidad, esta semana en el community engagement challenge de esta semana somos invitados a compartir aquella carta que muchos subestiman o que pocos conocen. Ciertamente Splinterlands tiene muchísimas cartas, muchas de ellas aunque antiguas, muy útiles. Particularmente para este post quiero enfocarme en un grupo de cartas que si bien ya tienen unos cuantos años encima, son cartas que aun así podemos utilizar en el formato moderno. Aunque no lo creas hay un grupo de cartas que sin importar el tiempo que pase siguen siendo una opción para utilizarse en moderno y que con el reciente cambio de meta producto de la introducción de la edición Conclave, estas cartas están comenzando a tener una utilidad significativa que antes no tenían, me refiero a la cartas gladiadoras.
These cards can only be obtained by joining a guild that participates in Guild Tournaments. With each round of these tournaments, and depending on your placement, you'll receive Merit Tokens that allow you to purchase Gladiator Cases containing these cards. Their main advantage is that they all have the Bloodlust ability, which boosts all their stats upon eliminating their target. They are a great advantage and initially could only be used in these tournaments, but a ruleset soon appeared that allowed their use in ranked matches, which allows us to use these cards in the modern format. I've recently realized the value of these cards in the current modern meta, and one of them stands out in particular: Flagulon Reine. Below, I'll share the great advantage of this gladiator card and, therefore, if you're new to the game, the importance of joining a guild and participating in Brawls. Let's begin!
Estas cartas solo pueden conseguirse formando parte de un clan que participe en los torneos de gremios, con cada ronda de estos torneos y dependiendo de la posición en esta competición recibirás token méritos que te permitirán comprar gladius cases que contienen estas cartas. Su principal ventaja es que todas tienen la habilidad bloodlust que les potencia todas sus estadísticas al eliminar su objetivo. Son una gran ventaja y en principio solo podían usarse en estos torneos, pero pronto apareció una ruleset que permitió usarlo en las partidas ranking, lo que nos permite usar estas cartas en el formato moderno. Recientemente me he dado cuenta del valor de estas cartas en la actual composición del meta moderno, una de ellas destaca en particular: Flagulon Reine. A continuación te compartiré la gran ventaja de esta carta gladiadora y por tanto, si eres nuevo en el juego, de la importancia de formar parte de un gremio y participar en las Brawls. Comencemos!
Battle rules!/Reglas de batalla!
Our featured battle has a wide mana pool (58) and the option to use Water, Earth, Life, and Dragon Splinters. The best prospects here are Water and Earth because they have very powerful Gladiator cards, but given the prominent role of magic in the Modern meta, we'll use the Water Splinter.
Nuestra batalla destacada tiene un amplio margen de mana (58) y la posibilidad de usar los splinter de agua, tierra, vida y dragón. Los mejores prospectos aquí son agua y tierra porque tienen cartas gladiadoras muy poderosas, pero en vista que la magia tiene un rol destacable en el meta de moderno usaremos el splinter de agua.
Are You Not Entertained?
This is the only ruleset we can use, and we'll focus our strategy on the advantage it gives us: the ability to summon a Gladiator card onto the battlefield. If you belong to a guild, you'll know that every 4-5 days, guild tournaments or brawls are held, and the rewards are merits that allow us to acquire Gladiator cards that can only be used in those tournaments. But this rule allows us to use them in ranked play, so it's a great opportunity to strengthen your lineup with one of these cards.
Esta es la única ruleset que podremos usar y enfocaremos nuestra estrategia en la ventaja que nos da, se trata de la posibilidad de invocar en el campo de batalla una carta gladiadora. Si perteneces a un gremio sabrás que cada 4-5 días se celebran torneos de gremios o brawls cuyas recompensas son méritos que nos permiten adquirir cartas gladiadoras que solo pueden usarse en esos torneos. Pero esta regla nos permite usarlas en el formato ranked por lo que es una gran oportunidad para reforzar tu alineación con alguna de estas cartas.
My Strategy/Mi estrategia
One of the most interesting elements of this new modern meta is the return of magic units. Now, using a lineup of units with magic attacks is quite effective, and considering I've been playing Brawls for two years, I have a wide repertoire of Gladiator cards for each of the available Splinters. But I'll focus on the Water class, as it has a magic unit that, due to the previous meta setup, I couldn't use, but now it's a piece that has the opportunity to shine. But first, let's look at the composition of my lineup.
Una de los elementos más interesantes de este nuevo meta en moderno es el regreso de las unidades mágicas, ahora usar una alineación de unidades con ataques mágicos es bastante efectivo y considerando que tengo 2 años jugando brawls tengo un amplio repertorio de cartas gladiadoras para cada uno de esos splinters disponibles, pero me enfocaré en la clase agua pues tiene una unidad mágica que por la configuración del meta anterior no podía usar pero que ahora es una pieza que tiene la oportunidad de brillar con luz propia. Pero antes veamos la composición de mi alineación.
🎴Cards/Cartas
🧙♂️Archon/Arconte: Marlai Singariel
Of course, since magic has a significant role in this meta, our main Archon will be one that boosts the damage of these attacks. Marlai Singariel represents the return of those magic lineups that provided so many hours of fun, like another similar Archon: Alric Stormbringer. However, you must be careful with the battle conditions, since unlike that alpha/beta card, this Archon has a mana cost of 6, but we can afford to use it because of our mana limit.
Por supuesto, si la magia tiene un peso importante en este meta nuestro arconte principal será uno que potencie el daño de estos ataques. Marlai Singariel representa el retorno de esas alineaciones mágicas que tantas horas de diversión brindó otro arconte similar: Alric Stormbringer. Solo que debes tener cuidado en las condiciones de batallas ya que a diferencia de aquella carta alfa/beta, este arconte tiene un coste de mana de 6 pero podemos darnos el lujo de usarla por el límite de mana que tenemos.
👾 Monsters/Monstruos: Ulundin Overseer
Flank
This card has become my go-to tank for these kinds of battles. While it doesn't have any direct attacks, it boasts a massive amount of health and defense, making it a real damage sponge. But it also has the flank ability, which lets you position any melee unit in the second slot, granting it reach so it can attack.
Esta carta se ha convertido en mi tanque de referencia para este tipo de batallas, si bien no cuenta con ningún tipo de ataque, tiene una enorme cantidad de vida y defensa, lo que lo convierte literalmente en una esponja de daño. Pero además tiene la habilidad flank que nos va a permitir ubicar cualquier unidad melé en la segunda posición confiriéndole la habilidad reach para que pueda atacar.
👾 Commander Slade
The melee unit we'll use to accompany our tank is Commander Slade. I'm not particularly interested in its abilities for this fight, but rather its high damage, health, and defense stats. With this, we complete a solid front line that can withstand a significant amount of damage. Now let's see how our offensive lineup is configured in the secondary row.
La unidad melé que usaremos para acompañar a nuestro tanque será Commander Slade, no me interesa mucho sus habilidades para este combate, sino sus altas estadísticas de daño, vida y defensa. Con esto cerramos una vanguardia sólida que podrá soportar bastante daño, veamos ahora como se configura nuestra alineación ofensiva en la fila secundaria.
👾 Warborn Shaman
Void Armor
Our next unit will be a magic unit. Warborn Shaman is, in my opinion, one of the best promotional cards Rebellion released. With the possibility of being used with Water and Death Splinters, it also has outstanding damage for a level 1 unit, and best of all, it has Void Armor, which protects it from magic attacks. However, you must consider its high mana cost, which is its biggest drawback.
Nuestra siguiente unidad será mágica, Warborn Shaman es para mi una de las mejores cartas promocionales que sacó Rebellion. Con la posibilidad de usarse con los splinters de agua y muerte, también tiene un daño sobresaliente para estar en nivel 1 y lo mejor es que cuenta con void armor que lo protege de ataques mágicos. Sin embargo debes considerar su alto coste de mana que es su mayor desventaja.

Blast & Shatter
Next up is our featured card: Flagulon Reine. Beyond the significant advantage of being a Gladiator card and its Bloodlust ability, this card stands out for two other reasons. First, it has the Blast ability, meaning it can damage adjacent units with each attack. Second, it has the Shatter ability, allowing it to break through enemy defenses with its first hit. Its relatively low mana cost makes it an ideal unit to combine with this Archon.
Luego tenemos nuestra carta protagonista: Flagulon Reine, más allá de la gran ventaja que tiene ser una carta gladiadora y su habilidad bloodlust, esta carta destaca por otras 2 razones. La primera es que tiene la habilidad blast, es decir, que puede daño a las unidades adyacentes con cada ataque que ejecuta, y la segunda ventaja es que cuenta con la habilidad shatter que le permite quebrar las defensas enemigas con el primer golpe. Su relativo bajo coste de mana lo hace una unidad ideal para combinarlo con este arconte.
👾Mystic Scaleweaver
Slow
Mystic Scaleweaver was my third Foundation card, but my first Legendary while playing Frontier, and it's undoubtedly a game-changer, as it slows the enemy's movement speed, giving us the advantage. Unfortunately, I only have it at level 1 for now, but it's at level 2 that this card becomes truly dangerous, as its damage increases, and combined with this Archon, it can deal up to 4 magic damage.
Mystic Scaleweaver fue mi tercera carta Foundation, pero mi primera legendaria jugando Frontier y es sin duda alguna una carta que hace la diferencia, ya que ralentiza la velocidad del enemigo para darnos la ventaja. Lamentablemente por ahora solo la tengo en nivel 1 pero es en nivel 2 que esta carta se vuelve realmente peligrosa ya que aumenta su daño y combinado con este arconte puede llegar hacer 4 de daño mágico.

Strengthen
Our formation has the disadvantage of lacking a defense to protect it from melee attacks, leaving us vulnerable to opportunistic units or those with the sneak ability that attack our backs. To mitigate the damage we might receive from these units, we'll use Razorhound to increase our maximum health. We'll place him in the last position to protect our rear.
Nuestra alineación tiene el inconveniente de no tener defensa que lo proteja de ataque melé, por lo que estamos expuestos a unidades oportunistas o con la habilidad sneak que atacan la retaguardia, para mitigar el daño que podamos recibir de estas unidades usaremos a Razorhound para incrementar nuestra vida máxima. Lo ubicaremos en la última posición para proteger la retaguardia.
⚔️Strategy and battle lineup/Estrategia y alineación de batalla
With our formation ready, we commit to battle and see that our opponent seems to have anticipated our strategy of obliterating him with magic, so I use an Archon that reduces our magic damage by -1. Luckily, we have a fairly solid front line, and the initiative is ours. Let's see how this fight unfolds.
Con nuestra alineación lista enviamos la batalla y vemos que nuestro oponente parece haber previsto nuestra estrategia de obliterarlo con magia así que uso un arconte que reduce nuestro daño mágico en -1. Por suerte tenemos una vanguardia bastante sólida y la iniciativa de la batalla es nuestra, veamos como se desarrolla este combate.

💥Rounds 1-2💥
In the first round, we failed to take down our opponent's decoy and lost our tank, but luckily we still had Commander Slade to hold off the enemy offensive. At the start of the second round, Flagulon Reine disposed of the decoy by activating his Bloodlust, while Razorhound dispatched Silverblade Fighter, clearing the front line, but unfortunately, we lost Commander Slade. That Execute ability granted by the Archon is definitely a real nuisance, as it allows units with it to execute a second attack if the target is left with 1 or 2 health.
En el primer round no logramos derribar el señuelo de nuestro oponente y perdimos a nuestro tanque pero por suerte nos queda Commander Slade para contener la ofensiva enemiga. Al comenzar el segundo round Flagulon Reine se deshace del señuelo activando su bloodlust, mientras Razorhound despacha a Silverblade Fighter despejando la vanguardia, pero lamentablemente perdimos a Commander Slade. Definitivamente esa habilidad de execute que confiere el arconte es verdaderamente una molestia, pues le permite a las unidades que lo tienen, ejecutar un segundo ataque si el objetivo queda con 1 o 2 de vida.
💥Rounds 3-5💥
Fortunately, we still had Warborn Shaman, who managed to hold off the enemy onslaught in the 3rd and 4th rounds, giving Flagulon Reine the opportunity to dispatch the weak Blackmoor and become stronger. He then eliminated Silverleaf Ranger, increasing his damage to 5! And although Lord Thanalor eliminated Warborn Shaman, he is no match for our star card Flagulon, who now with 5 magic damage was able to easily eliminate him and seal the victory for us.
Por suerte nos quedó Warborn Shaman que logró contener la embestida enemiga en el 3er y 4to round dándole la oportunidad a Flagulon Reine de despachar al débil Blackmoor y hacerse más fuerte para posteriormente eliminar al Silverleaf Ranger y aumentar su daño hasta 5! Y aunque Lord Thanalor eliminó a Warborn Shaman, no es rival para nuestra carta protagonista Flagulon, que ahora con 5 de daño mágico fácilmente pudo eliminarlo y sellar la victoria para nosotros.
🌊 Conclusions/Conclusiones
- Although it might not have seemed so, this was no easy battle. Our opponent focused their strategy on exploiting the ability granted by their lineage mastery, using elven cards. However, the real difference was made by our gladiator card, which grew stronger as it dispatched its targets. This highlights the great importance of having these gladiator cards, because while we can't always use them, when the time comes, they are an invaluable asset.
- Aunque no lo pareciera esta no fue una batalla sencilla, nuestro oponente enfocó su estrategia en explotar la habilidad que le confiere el dominio de linaje, usando cartas élficas. Sin embargo, la gran diferencia la hizo nuestra carta gladiadora que se fue fortaleciendo a medida que despachaba sus objetivo. Esto destaca la gran importancia de tener estas cartas gladiadoras, ya que si bien no siempre podremos usarlas, cuando llega el momento son una ayuda invaluable.

It's interesting how Splinterlands evolves over time; cards that were of little use in a previous meta, like Rebellion/Chaos Legion, now gain a decisive advantage in the Conclave/Rebellion meta.
