My participation in the Phone Photography Contest! - Round #60: Appreciating My Orange Lily [Eng/Esp]

What's up, friends of Fell Good! Welcome to my second participation in the Phone Photography contest in its round #60 and for this occasion I wanted to share with you the result of months of dedication and care of a lily that was given to me to make it bloom, I am referring to this great Orange Lily.

Like a good biologist, I've turned my balcony into a small garden where I have a wide variety of plants, from ferns and xerophytic plants to bromeliads and ornamental orchids. And in this case, I decided to incorporate this large orange lily since it was a gift from a neighbor who brought it from eastern Venezuela. Although I'm not used to having such large plants at home, I couldn't refuse this gift.

Unlike the bromeliads I have at home, which are a real pain to care for and get to bloom, this plant is easier because it belongs to the Hippeastrum genus. This is a monocotyledonous vascular plant, which, unlike orchids, has roots that can anchor in the soil to extract nutrients.

Being a lily, this plant isn't woody, but its long, fleshy, sword-shaped stems can grow up to 30 to 40 cm! I was barely able to make room for it on the balcony to take advantage of the sunlight. Initially, when they gave it to me, it was nothing more than a handful of long, thick, unprepossessing green spikes, so the first thing I did was change the soil for more nutrient-rich soil, courtesy of my friends at the Botanical Garden. This helped the first buds grow. There were four in total, and of those four, only one bloomed into this enormous and majestic orange flower. So I decided not to miss the opportunity and capture the moment when this lily was in full bloom and share it with you in this photograph taken with my cell phone.

So, friends, this was my entry for this week's contest. I normally dedicate a day at the beginning of the month to caring for my plants, changing the soil and adding fertilizer. The rest of the time, I keep them watered, as these past few months have been really hot, but as you can see, it's been worth it. See you in the next Phone Photography Contest! Cheers.

Saluos.
