And, the world being small, is because you were on Hawaii. Which is some islands surrounded by a LOT of water. (also the tallest mountains in the world)

Small island, but there are a million people crammed onto Oahu. Of course if you look at an aerial map, most of the island is unpopulated because it is mostly mountain.
