“How I treat you is determined by how you treat me.”

This is a phrase that many of us have seen on a regular basis. People say it, and they post it online. Yeah, many times, the actions of people towards others will be a great determining factor in how other treats them. The part of yourself that you show to people might end up being the part they judge you based off of and then use it as a yardstick for how to treat you in the future.

Now, this isn’t a hypothetical situation, because many people do it. As a matter of fact, we also do it from time to time. Because indeed, whether we want to admit it or not, the way people treat us would be the way that we treat them.

But then, shouldn’t there be more to life? Should we always get to wait for other people to show us their true colors before we decide how we’d treat them? Who are we specifically in that first instance? What are our true colors to begin with? Before we find out that the other person is good or bad and decide to treat them accordingly, who are we? Are we also good people? Or are we bad?

If we rely simply on returning the energy that’s given to us, what exactly does that make us? Aren’t we simply a form of mirror that reflects whatever is shown to it? What then would be our identity? It’s as if for every little thing that happens, it’ll be easy to sway us because who we are to Peter would be different from who we are to Paul, simply because we’re not being ourselves, we’re simply reflecting energies.

But then, what do we do? When you think about it, it’s not that tough a nut to crack. There is already so much that’s wrong with the world, and we shouldn’t add to it simply because. That someone is mean and evil to you doesn’t mean you also have to be mean and evil to them. I’m not asking that you become a victim, but you can always be the bigger person and handle it in a better way that will not mess with your integrity or your mental health.

So yeah, how people treat you should determine how you treat them. Their actions towards you will determine if you’ll stick around in their lives, or just give them a distance for your safety and your sanity. In the same way, people who are good to you would encourage you to step up and always turn up for them as well. That’s just how it is.

And what am I saying in earnest? Let’s try to remain true to our beliefs. Let’s decide who we are before we can see the true colors of other people. Are we nice, accommodating, and easily approachable? Do people have only one chance to hurt you, and when that happens, you won’t give them another shot? Or do they simply not get it at all? Are we mean and just aloof? Or are we one of those who take pleasure in taking advantage of the good qualities in others?

The answers we find for these ones will be helpful in determining where exactly our core values as individuals lie.
