Sports Makes Money!
A lot of resources go into sports. Footballers are paid lots of money, but then, there is also the medical team that takes care of them, the drivers that move them around, the buses, the plane tickets, the stadium where they train… the list goes on and on. Sport in general is a capital-intensive endeavor, and no matter what, you’ll always spend money.
Even if you’re not playing professionally and you’re simply doing it for the love of the game, it won’t make any difference because you’ll still spend money. You’ll pay for boots and the appropriate attire, you’ll pay for training, or for healthcare when your body begins to tell on you. So yeah, even in its littlest form, sports take a lot of money.
And then, when you bring it to the global stage, the amount of money it consumes is astronomical. Just the FIFA World Cup alone costs hundreds of billions of dollars just to prepare for it. Any country that hosts the events always spends a lot on preparation. But it’s never just them, even the other countries that come over still have to spend serious money as well. The footballers have to fly to the country and be taken care of while there, on and on it goes… so many things really have to come together for these things to work.
And then, not just with the FIFA World Cup, it also works with the Olympics and other international games. They are highly capital-intensive, and governments go all out when it comes to these things. They spend huge sums of money in preparation for these events, and all of it is in a bid to have an interesting time for hosts and guests.
But then, is all this really necessary? We all know how helpful all that money would be if repurposed to infrastructure and also to the people. Those billions would definitely go a long way in changing the lives of many citizens of the country. However, is this a smart move? I know for a fact that all the money spent in preparation for such events is nothing but investments, and no matter how it goes, it will pay off for years after the events themselves.
When such high-level events are held in a country, it boosts tourism and thus brings an inflow of money into the economy of country. More money for the people, more earnings in taxes for the government. And everyone is happy.
Also, besides the financial gain, sports also have a way of bringing people together. It’s only during games that people forget that they’re of different tribes, religions, or even races. Once they support the same team, nothing else matters but the win. Hell, even those who support different teams will still be cordial in their conversations. Sports have a grip on us all, and their importance can’t be overemphasized.
Without sports, it will basically be like the world is without music. Because what then is the joy? Just work, work, and work. nothing for strangers to bond over and banter about… so no, sports can never be a waste of resources, except it’s handled poorly. But when done right, it will be a cash cow and also foster unity among a diverse demography.
That’s the beauty of sports.

Thank you for this.
I am not a sports enthusiast but I totally agree with you, from strengthening political bonds between countries to raising money from merchandise sale and foreigners tourism, its actually worth the investment.
Yeah, when handled right, it pays off.
Indeed, it has many financial benefits, and there are many other things related to sports, and in the long-term perspective, sports events can bring many opportunities to the organizing country.
Yeah... it always works out.
