Doing It For Others...
If there is one thing I’ve noticed these days, it’s how people can be cruel to animals, especially dogs. I know that adopting pets is quite a rave these days and just about everyone wants one. Sadly, many people don’t want them for the companionship and friendship that they provide. Instead, they simply want to own dogs because it’s what everyone else is doing and they want to feel among. They want to join those who can say “I own a dog”.
Well, it’s all good and fine if you can afford it. As long as you’re taking good care of the animal under your protection, then I can’t fault anything you do. But then, if you’re broke, what business do you have raising a dog? How will someone who is finding it hard to eat three square meals be able to take care of a dog?
The truth is, many of the breeds we have today are nothing like the local dogs that we knew growing up. Those dogs were survivors and didn’t need round-the-clock care. They knew how to go in search of food for themselves, the females even knew where to go when it was ready to make babies. Your only duty as an owner would be to care for it when it’s sick and provide a home. Because even though the dog goes out every day, like a bloody 9-5, it’ll surely come back home. If it doesn’t get lost- don’t forget that.
However, we soon started having other breeds, and then crossbreeding began as well. And many of these breeds are not designed to survive on their own. They also have special food that they can eat, and their food is expensive. Just one can of their meal would set you back thousands of naira. It’s not every dog that can eat eba, rice, and spaghetti. Which is something that a lot of people give their dogs.
In my opinion, if you can’t bear the financial responsibility that comes with raising a dog, don’t adopt one. The poor thing will just be suffering and you won’t care because you’ll be too busy figuring out how to solve your own problems.
So, this is what I’m currently facing in my compound. A neighbor of mine has this beautiful dog. I don’t even know the breed, but I know that she’s beautiful. When she first came to the compound, she was robust and full of energy. She barked at everything that moved, and if you entered the compound for the first time, she would get so dominant that it would scare anyone at all.
But now, she seems only like a shadow of her former self. She has lost so much weight that all the energy she used to display is gone. It’s clear as day that she is malnourished and the people who brought her to the compound just don’t care. It’s a family with about four children, the first of which just gained admission into the university. I know the toll that could have on the family, and someone thinking of so many bills to sort, will they care about the welfare of the dog they adopted?
It’s just sad that we don’t have a system for animal rights here in my country, because this should be enough to send them to jail. Besides, it’s not like we can tell the Police, we’d be laughed out of the station. When we tried talking to the family, they told us to mind our business. The dog is always in chains and locked in the house, every evening she just barks and barks, but they lack the usual bass and strength. She’s hungry.
This is what happens when you do something because of others and not because you want it. It’s just like having a child simply because you’re married and society demands that a couple should have one. Yet, you know you’re not financially capable of such a huge decision. You know that you’re not ready. Yet, you go ahead and end up billing your family members for every pampers and toothbrush that you need to buy.
I just hope that people can be more real. Because when we keep trying to act like people who don’t care about us, we don’t just hurt ourselves, we hurt those who depend on us as well. We really need to do better.

Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣...oh my , I couldn't hold the laughter at this point..lolz, we really need to do better biko
Talking about this dog Bruno, it will be more dangerous if she start using humans for lunch oo
Are you sure the dog wouldn't go violence without food? People should just be real biko and stop all these copyright. In this economy, yet, you are feeding dog with expensive feed when you aren't capable of feeding the humans under your custody
It's cruelty to the animals but like you said, we can't report the matter to the police because, you will just be laughed at in this part of my world
Lolz 😂
The dog that hunger has almost finish... it won't even have the strength to attack anybody. When you hear her barks, you'd pity her. It's just sad really, a great injustice to the poor thing.
Here, as we have many animal defenders, we are managing to make the laws stricter for those who mistreat animals, As you said, the penalties should be harsher
!BBH
Hopefully, we'd get to that point soon. Because we're not there yet.
I think in that case you can't do anything as your law don't allow the right. In my country, it's the same, but people are not so interested in raising a dog in my area. Only rich people do such a thing here, and I feel they do it to show off their wealth. I can't think about raising a dog as it can give me a financial blow.
Hah... here poor people would rather compete with the rich. They would own dogs simply because they want to look rich, and in the end, the poor thing suffers. It's so painful.
