I think that one of the most important decisions we’d ever get to make has to do with our ability to set boundaries. We need to know our limits and also know when to say no, because no matter how receptive and tolerant we are, there always has to be a time when it becomes too much. When we simply have to step away from something because it’s not right for us, and we can’t see ourselves doing it in the long run.

Boundaries are one of the most important elements of growth, and how you enforce them will also decide the kind of person you are. If you are lax in enforcing your boundaries and limitations, you’ll be swayed by every external factor available to sway you. And I can assure you that this is not something you’d want for yourself.

The thing is, boundaries are not just with people or things that we don’t find in good taste. We don’t just set boundaries and limits for the things and people we don’t like, we also don’t just stay away from habits and characters that don’t align with our values. We also need to set boundaries, even for the things we enjoy and the people we love.

Take me for instance, I love watching movies. I believe this is something I’ve made clear multiple times on this blog. However, I have to set boundaries when watching movies, or I’ll find myself watching movies throughout the day without doing anything else that would be productive. I also enforce boundaries around the kind of movies I watch. I’m very careful about the content I consume because, being a storyteller, I know the effect good storytelling can have on the mind of the viewer.

And that’s how it is, even with work. Regardless of how much you love your job or what makes you money, if you don’t set boundaries, it’ll take over your entire life and even destroy the relationships that you hold dear to you. That’s why we all need to know when to say no. Both the things that are bad for us, and those that we enjoy a lot.

So, boundaries are very important, and setting them out clearly is also important. The earlier people know your boundaries, the easier it’ll be to flow with it. Because the more you allow such things to happen, you’d only end up being miserable around people doing things that you hate. Back when I was in school, one of my major rules was that no smoking in my room. I hated the smell with passion, hell, if you were a known smoker, I wouldn’t even let you come in for more than a few minutes.

I was known for that, and no one even tried to break that, not even once. But then, as life goes on, I’ve decided to set more boundaries and limits to myself, seeing how much I needed them. And for many people, this was a new part for me. They didn’t know of these boundaries, and seeing me in a different light is hard. But eventually, they always adapt. And that’s how it should be.

You don’t mold your life to fit into what others want, you uphold your standards so that everyone else will adapt to you. They don’t have a choice, they can only take what you give them. That’s why many of the controversial influencers today who say and do crazy things online, the majority of the people who publicly bash them are also their followers. For some reason, they don’t like what said influencer stands for, but they still follow and engage with their content.

That’s how it is. Stay true to your boundaries, and everything else will fall in place for you.

totally felt that part where you said no smoking in your room. Clear rules early make life easier for everyone. In my work, if I dont set time blocks, the job can creep into nights and break the boudnaries with family, even when I love the numbers :)

Yeah... if people know your boundaries from the start, they'll find it easier to follow it.

Exactly. Clear rules upfront save drama later :) I’ve seen that with my no smoking rule and with time windows for calls, once it’s said early, peolpe respect it. Do you add a gentle reminder if hte line gets fuzzy, or let the stand;ards speak for themselves?

Yeah... many times, people will push against the boundaries, so I remind them. Depending on the situation, i can be harsh, or I can be gentle. Either way, I set the reminder.

I think it's ok to push our boundaries when we want to achieve something in life and I think it's necessary also but still boundary is needed for long term sustainability.

It's totally okay to push our boundaries and people should know when to stop and when to keep pushing.
