Everyone on this platform already knows this about me by now. I’m a voracious reader. I’ve always been right since my childhood. As a matter of fact, I was born into a family of readers. Reading was one of my earliest academic skills that I mastered, long before I mastered basic arithmetic. That’s just to show how much I enjoyed it growing up.

Back then, I read it all. I read novels, comics, articles, magazines, textbooks, and newspapers. Basically, anything that I was certain could tell a story would most likely find its way into my hands eventually. And I read it all. It was always fun to me, and to date, I still enjoy the art of reading.

Growing up, one of my favorite textbooks to read was usually the English Language texts, and the only reason was that they came with comprehension passages. I read those short stories and flipped through their colorful pages, over and over again. And that’s why till today, I can still remember some of those passages by heart. I remember many passages based on Ali and Simbi, Edet, and some textbooks I’ve forgotten their names, but I still remember some passages.

Anyway, that’s all in the past. Over the years, I’ve read so many books. I’m sure they’ve all run into hundreds, if not thousands. During my senior secondary school days, I was a menace. I could read a full novel (over 300 pages) in a single day. I read on the road (while I trekked home from school), I read until late into the night, draining my rechargeable light, and many times, not washing my uniform on time. It was always crazy.

And when my school finally opened a library, it only got better. I had access to more books, and I read voraciously until I graduated. That didn’t quench my thirst though, because I kept reading and reading. But as I kept growing and more responsibilities started coming up, my reading frequency began to wane. Thanks to school, work, and even laziness, my reading culture suffered drastically. But I soon found my way back.

Although this time, it was with ebooks. Many times, I don’t have the time to read physical books, and with ebooks, I can read them wherever I am and always on the go. And I’ve read many books in that manner as well. So now, when was the last time I read a physical book? Well, I won’t lie to you, it’s been a few months.

It was for a period of a week, I read two books by Catherine Coulter and Sandra Brown, respectively. Catherine Coulter’s book was titled Point Blank while Sandra Brown’s was Breath of Scandal, they’re not new publications, but old favorites of mine that I love to revisit from time to time. Since I returned to Lagos, that was my first time rereading the books.

Sadly though, since then, I’ve not picked up a physical book again. There’s just no time. We could consider the brochures I’ve picked up during several events I attended, or the bulletins I pick up every Sunday at church. But I don’t consider them books. Well, if they were, they won’t be called brochures and bulletins, would they? Lol!

I’d really love to return to the days when I read more physical books. The days when I could curl up on my bed, reading late into the night with a dying lamp. Thinking of those days strikes me with a huge sense of nostalgia. But what can I do? They’re all gone. Now, I’m trying to make sense of what I have now. Taking it one step at a time.

Well, we’ll see how it goes.

I thought I'm the only one mad over books but you just proved me wrong. All these are eggxactly how I roll when it comes to reading. I don't care the size of the book or the number of pages which usually scares a lot of my friends away. I just read and read until I see the very last full stop, lol.

I also haven't been able to read physical books as much as I used to. I'm based on ebooks as it is, never letting my love for reading to die off.

I understand you though. When responsibilities come staring right back at you, a lot of things tend to fade into the background.

Your note about rereading Point Blank and Breath of Scandal made me smile, revisiting old picks just resets the mind. I moved my reADing to ebooks too, and and I sneak a short chapter during coffee breaks, way kinder than those dying lamp nights :) I dont miss lugging hardbacks, but I treat a slim paperback like dessert at week end, one small serving so the habit stays. Clear, steady beats frantic for me.
