Some areas of San Salvador, like Escalon, San Benito and Santa Elena were always considered safe by the local population.

On the other hand, zones like Soyapango, Mejicanos and Apopa were controlled by gangs and considered off limits. I still haven't been there.

These days Bukele would say that all areas are safe, but locals still have the impression that these zones are dangerous.
