Reclining - Recostados [En-Es]

While walking through the streets of Santiago, I came across a rather peculiar man. Every time I passed by that place, he was lying in the same position. People say that he had problems, and that he once worked with that little cart, fixing lighters, until he lost his mind. I photographed him, but what I hadn’t noticed before is that many people in the city adopt that same position, right there on the street.

Transitanto por las calles de Santiago me encontré con un señor bastante peculiar. Cada vez que pasaba por ese lugar, él estaba recostado en la misma posición. Cuentan que ese señor tenía problemas y que antes trabajaba en ese carrito, arreglando fosforeras, hasta que perdió la razón. Lo fotografié, pero lo que no había notado es que muchas personas en la ciudad adoptan esa misma posición ahí mismo, en la calle.

This struck me as something interesting, because there was an atmosphere of depression, and even though they might each have their own struggles, the energy felt different—almost as if their problems were infinite. I should add that, every time I photographed him, some children would pass by and scold me, telling me not to take pictures, as if I were doing something very wrong. In that moment, I felt bad, but I explained to them what I was doing and gave them a brief introduction to photography.

Esto me pareció algo interesante, ya que se percibía una atmósfera de depresión y, aunque tuvieran algún problema, la energía era diferente, como si los problemas fueran infinitos. Cabe acotar que, cada vez que lo fotografiaba, pasaban unos niños por ese lugar y me reclamaban que no lo hiciera, como si estuviera haciendo algo muy malo. En ese momento me sentí mal, pero les expliqué lo que estaba haciendo y les hablé de la fotografía, dándoles una breve introducción.

Now, when I stop and think about it, I imagine that maybe one day those children will see me again on the street and tell me that they started in photography because of me… and that now they, too, photograph those who lie down on the sidewalks.

Ahora me detengo a pensar, y creo que tal vez algún día esos niños me vean por la calle y me digan que comenzaron en la fotografía gracias a mí… y que ahora ellos también fotografían a los recostados.
