Gardening, Bees And Other Wonders Of Nature

Gardening, Bees And Other Wonders Of Nature.jpg

Some time ago wrote a post about my indoor plants which are by the way doing pretty ok. This week however I took a trip to visit my brother and take a look at some plantations on a bigger scale. Even though the growing season is just about to begin the experience was really nice and I learned a lot.

The place was really beautiful and there was a lot of space for all sorts of plantations. In this picture, you can see the front yard and a flock of jackdaws or starlings on the top of the trees giving me some Hitchcock vibes.

This time of the year most rows where plants and vegetables are supposed to be planted are still covered with tarpaulin to get rid of the weeds - this way they won't get sunlight and go crazy.

Not everything was covered though. Here are rows of garlic growing and if I understood correctly, these were planted last year. Unfortunately, because of the harsh winter, one of the rows was destroyed by frost.

The ones that survived look really good in the spring sun!

In the backyard, there are also apple trees, and bushes of berries(blueberry, raspberry, etc.). On the left, you can see the area where there will be potatoes planted.

Hives

Not far from the plantations, there were also four bee hives on the top of the small hill.

The bees were already awake and busy doing their runs to gather pollen even though not that many flowers had emerged yet.

I was surprised how close I could get without being stung, I was just advised to stay out of their route and let them do their daily activities.

Now I'm feeling like Winnie The Pooh since I got some of that sweet, golden elixir to take home with me! Really good stuff especially with tea and now that I seemed to caught a cold.

Some Farm Work And Chickens

I helped my brother to clean up this old storage room, take off the old floor and fill the space with gravel. Next up there's gonna be a new floor boarding, some hooks on the walls to put stuff hanging there, and so on. Can't wait to see it when it's finished.

Our working site was next to a chicken coop but I got to see the hens only once when they went out to eat. Down below is a picture of a rooster and a brown chicken. There were also other color variations too.

For a city boy like me, the biggest surprise was how big the chickens were! I don't know why but I've always thought they were a lot smaller in size.

Soon when the weather gets warmer the chickens get to walk around the yard freely.

When the day was done this friendly cat named Mimmi slept the whole first night next to me - what a nice welcome!

Other Interesting Observations

I forgot the name of this alien-looking plant but I think it was Balkan something... Let me know if you know what this is!

In this triangular area, there will be growing all kinds of different herbs. I'm really liking the shape of this herb garden and how it fits there in the whole landscape.

This is an interesting picture. There is a new oak tree growing inside of the remains of an old oak tree. Perhaps a bird dropped the seed in there. Nature really has a way to surprise us...

... And so does the Finish spring weather. On the third day of my visit, we got a little snowstorm!

Gladly the ground is already so warm that the snow melted away pretty soon.

Flowers.jpg

The flowers in the front yard looked a bit under the weather but I guess they are used to these kinda rapid changes and will be just fine.

Conclusion

Even though I seemed to have caught the flu during the trip I was having a great time! It felt really good to get out of the city concrete surroundings and experience the small wonders of nature up close.

It's also amazing to be able to witness the strength of nature in so many ways, to how resilient it can be - after a sudden late spring snowstorm, the plants will stand up again and the bees will continue their hard work. I can now feel myself slipping into this poetic mode again but I guess it's just that this kind of experience isn't that common for me.

Hopefully, I can bring some of that excitement into my humble indoor garden and of course, cannot wait for the next visit back there to see everything in bloom.

Thank you for reading!

I was going to say I envy you for that beautiful place, then I saw it's not yours :D
Anyway, things are looking great over there, even if it seems a bit cold. Gardening season is on anyway. Congrats to your brother as he's set up for a god start, with the garden, bees and chickens. Nice.

Hehe! Yeah, I must admit I got a bit jealous of him myself, such a great lifestyle. My brother is actually an oldtimer in farming, he used to own a bigger farm that was focusing on biodynamic farming.

Still, I think those were the last snowfalls we got here, or at least I hope so.
The real work on the farm is about to start! :)

Hahah chickens can really shock people sometimes - they have an idea of what they do and what they behave like or what they look like and then see them in real life and are like: WHHHHHHHAATTT!

Your brother's farm is amazing. Sounds like you really enjoyed being up there and helping out as well.

:D I had that exact 'whaat?' -moment!

I was amazed by the farm too. So much to do there, so much happening right next to you since nature is so close. At the same time, I felt a bit sad too, as a guy living in the city for so many years, I felt kinda alienated from nature and from that kinda farm life.

Still, a great experience, and can't wait to visit there again!

Bees are so peaceful actually! They are a beautiful powerful presence to encounter up close 🌸 And don't worry about stings, if you stay calm & loving they won't because they would sacrifice their life only in major danger, so they will be totally fine landing on you, and if they sting you, it's an adrenaline kick & you probably needed the medicine 😉

They seem to be! They were not interested in, just doing their daily work. :) Lovely creatures, really fascinating to follow their activities.
