A final #wednesdaywalk around downtown Burlington, VT

One of the things that my wife and I found really cool about the Burlington area is the mixture of old and new that you probably get quite frequently in many of the larger New England towns. While it doesn't compare to walking down the street and seeing a castle like the folks over in England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, there are some quite old houses here and it's interesting to see them in the middle of a couple highrises or right next to a hotel.

Imagine the movie "Up", with the old man's house in the middle of a sprawling city. That's kind of what it was like. I've got a few photos I want to share for you as I finally wrap up the time @mrsbozz and I spent in Vermont for our anniversary. Most of these shots were taken within walking distance of our hotel. I'm sharing them as part of the #wednesdaywalk initiative started by @tattoodjay.

The opening shot was actually in color, but I converted it to black and white before posting it here. The fact is, the photo came out a little blurry and I think that the edit kind of takes away from the fact that it wasn't a clear photo to begin with.

We actually tame across this house as we were walking around one night trying to find our way back to Church Street. I got a little turned around and took us down a street that dead ended at a office building housing a Charles Schwab branch and a couple other financial advisors.

Almost on top of this house is a credit union to the right, a salon in the old house to the left, and across the street is a row of office buildings.

It makes you wonder how much this property is worth if the people ever decided to sell. I really like the details in this house. If you look really closely, on the canopy over the porch you can see small stars in the corners.

The hotel we stayed at had a number of ways to enter the building. While the main entrance was currently under construction, there were plenty of other access points from the sides and back. One of our regular entrances and exits took us out the back entrance and down an alley before dumping us out on the street.

This building is called Follett House and in the back part of it is a real estate company. According to the Wiki, it was built in 1840 for a prominent local businessman as most large houses often are.

Back before the further development of the port, this was probably considered a "lakeside" house and to be fair, it does still offer some pretty great views of Lake Champlain. It is protected as a heritage site and is the last 19th century lakeside mansion still standing in the city.

I kind of wish we had walked down along the waterfront side of it. You can't quite see it in the photo above, but the pillars going into the door are actually a side entrance. The front has columns going all the way to the top of the building. If you do a quick Google Search for Follett House, you will likely see what I am talking about.

I could share a picture, but I don't want to break copyright and I prefer to share my own photos as much as possible.

Just about a block East of Follett House is this multi-use building that I just needed to get a photo of because of the vines covering the side of it. As you can see, the onset of Winter had already started to take its toll on some of the foliage and I think it allowed for a really nice contrast.

Currently, this building houses a law firm, an adult learning center, and a couple of other things.

Along with the old, there is also a fair amount of new in Burlington. These townhomes sit along the shores of Lake Champlain and offer some pretty amazing views of the lake. They face the same way as our hotel did and since we had a corner room, we could actually see the back side of them from our room.

It was kind of interesting to watch the people come and go. It appeared that at least one or two of them were being rented out as vacation properties. I saw a person dig out a hide a key from under a potted plant and enter one of them.

See the potted plant on the second balcony from the top in the center of the photo above? Just to the left of the tree that is changing colors. You might be a little surprised to find out that the back of the building wasn't quite as nice looking as the front. If you scan to the left just a bit, you can see the missing shingles and roof damage to the building. I bet they still have some killer parties on the roof deck though!

I'd mentioned this before, but Burlington is situated on the side of a hill, that means walking back up into town from the waterfront can be a bit of a workout. I'm not sure if the photo above really does it justice, but this was the steepest incline we had to face while we were in Burlington.

Most of them weren't too bad honestly, but this one after eating a decent breakfast and then taking a little bit of a walk was kind of killer!

It seems only right that I leave you with a couple shots of Church Street Marketplace. This was one of our favorite areas of Burlington. We didn't visit any of the shops, but we stopped into one or two of the pubs and bars. We actually just read the other day that one of our favorite places we visited is up for sale, so if you are interested in running a tavern in downtown Burlington, there you go. Only $98,000 if I remember correctly.

We saw this sign outside one of the places we stopped at for drinks and it made us laugh. I know it came out a bit blurry, but it says "Husband Daycare Center Drop Off's Welcome". If @mrsbozz were more of a shopper, this might have been an option for sure!

It's been fun sharing our time in Vermont with you. It honestly makes me wish we were back there right now. Though I expect there is a bit of snow now! Ski season is probably right around the corner!
