Much Respect

I was sitting on the couch last night watching TV with my wife. We had the cable channel Court TV on as she has been following the Karen Read retrial case pretty closely over the past few months. She really loves this true crime stuff and as soon as one case finishes up, she finds another to dive into.

Anyway, while we were watching that, I also had my phone on watching the stat stream of our nephews baseball game down in Cedar Point, OH. If you read my post yesterday, you know that his travel team has been struggling. They are now sitting seventeen games into the season and they don't have a single win. It's kind of sad. It really got me thinking though and I turned to @mrsbozz and said something to the effect that: "you really have to respect these kids for continuing to show up each day".

I can't say as though I would feel the same way if it were me constantly on the losing end of things. I didn't really play sports in school, but I do have a bit of an idea what it is like to constantly be on the losing side of a contest. When I was in high school my friend was on the tennis team and they needed more players so he encouraged me to join them.

I had never picked up a racket in my life, but like I said, they needed the people, so I found myself on a varsity doubles team. Looking back now, I bet my partner hated me. I was just plain horrible. There is no gentle way to put it. I don't think we won a single game let alone a set or match, but I never missed a meet, and I kept showing up every day giving it my best shot.

As I get older, I am not sure I would have that same tenacity. As I said though, I have a lot of respect for the exuberance of youth and the way our nephew keeps showing up every game despite their record or any drama that might be happening on the team at any given moment.

They have another game today just a little over an hour from now. I'll definitely be watching the stream and hoping for a better outcome than yesterday. That's all you can do really right? Just put one foot in front of the other and hope today is better than yesterday.

He did a bit of pitching yesterday, which isn't uncommon, but it also isn't the norm. He struggled being put in that position, but he ultimately got the last out. I think he could be a decent pitcher if that was the road he decided to take. I think he is happy playing first and third base though.

Final scores yesterday... 18 to 0 and 20 to 1. Sadly, that's pretty typical...
