Mother's Day Weekend Fireworks!
As I mentioned in the post on my main account today, it was a big softball weekend for my niece. It wasn't just that they won all three games they played this weekend, it was the fact that they outscored their opponents with a combined 50 to 13 runs. That's a lot of offense for the Lady Shamrocks!
Things got started on Friday night with a cold game against Westerville North. This was a make up game from earlier in the week that they had to cancel due to an excessive amount of rain. I had a feeling they were going to move it to Friday night, and that was confirmed when we arrived into town.
Although it was chilly out, the bats were hot and the "rocks" took down their opponent 17 to 1. My niece actually wasn't hitting her best in this game, but the rest of the team was able to pick up the slack and carry them to victory. The wind was blowing right towards home plate from the outfield at a pretty brisk clip, so home runs were off the menu for this game.
Saturday was a bit different as far as the weather was concerned. It was a beautiful 75 to 80 degrees out and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. It was just beautiful. There was even a nice cool breeze that showed up every couple of minutes to keep things pleasant.
Quite honestly, it was perfect softball weather and the ladies took advantage of it. They started the three team tournament with a win over Scioto 15 to 5, they then followed it up with a 18 to 7 win over Jerome. It was looking a bit scary in that last game, but they were able to hold on and keep the Celts at bay for the win.
In the game against Scioto, my niece made the play that gave them the final out of the game. In the last game against Jerome, the first base person was able to hit the only home run we saw that weekend. It was beauty too, straight out to center field.
With those two wins under their belt, the Shamrocks won the three team tournament and got to take home the trophy. It was pretty cool to see them accomplish that. It's something they should have been able to do the previous year as well, but due to some poor coaching they weren't able to make it happen.
Trust me, I was at those games and I remember well how poorly it went.
There was a big play in this game where the coach from other team said my niece leaned into the pitch to get hit by it. Oddly enough, the official changed his mind and ended up agreeing with him. Funny thing though, I had the whole thing on video and she never came close to leaning in. Of course an official isn't going to change a called based on a spectator's video, but there were some tense exchanges between my brother in law, my father in law, myself, and some of the fans from the other team.
To be fair, we were simply defending ourselves against their trashy behavior. It was a pretty classless all around for the Scioto coaching staff and their fans. They should really be ashamed of themselves.
Needless to say, they all immediately vacated the premises after their loss.
