Going Wild!

The MLB Wild Card series started yesterday with eight teams facing off to see if they get to continue along in the playoffs. I was talking to a guy the other day and he said it was a lot more fun when the wild card was just a single game. There was a lot more pressure and you really had to be at your best to ensure your path forward.

I can definitely see how that would make a difference, but here we are doing a best of three series. Things got started around 1 PM yesterday with the Detroit Tigers facing the Cleveland Guardians (they changed their name remember) in Cleveland. I watched the game here in my office and it was very close. Skubal pitched a great game striking out 14 batters or something like that. I think he went seven and a half innings total and had well over 100 pitches.

Detroit came away with the 2 to 1 win and now they play again today to try and shut the door on the Guardians without forcing a game 3. I really hope they can put this behind them and move along in the playoffs. After the great season they had, it was kind of hard to watch them mildly implode leading up to this point.

The Cubs took down San Diego 3 to 1 in Chicago. It looks like the one run that the Padres got came later in the game after the starting pitcher had been pulled because his ERA was 0. Later that night, Boston traveled into New York to face the Yankees. As much as I can't stand the Yankees, I can't think of anything more American than the Red Sox and the Yanks facing off against each other in the wild card round. Boston came away with the win 3 to 1 and they play again tonight at 6:00 PM to see if there will be a game three or if the Yankees start their off season.

Finally, in the night game, The Los Angeles Dodgers who have been a favorite to win the World Series all season pummeled the Cincinnati Reds 10 to 5 for the win. I have little doubt the Dodgers should be able to close out this series tonight, but I guess we will see.

In the end, I don't really care too much about the other teams. I just want the Tigers to do well. I'm honestly a little worried about that. I have heard people complaining most of the season that the Tigers are pretty one dimensional with Skubal being their only decent pitcher. It may have been a mistake throwing him in the first game and then counting on the rest of your lineup to take care of business. My guess is they want him to be ready again if they make it to the next round, but it still feels like you are taking a big gamble there.

If I were the manager of Cleveland I probably would have thrown one of my weaker pitchers against Skubal knowing they would likely get the win and then save my aces for the next two games to close things up.

There is a reason I am not a major league baseball manager though...
