Fall Ball Has Begun

My wife and I were really hoping that we could make it down to Virginia this Fall to watch our niece play some of her games with her new university team. Unfortunately, given their schedule and the time they took to release it, it doesn't look like we are going to be able to make it down there. I've been told though that we might suddenly be jumping on a plane at some point, so who knows...
Although we might not make it down, her parents made the trip for their first game this past weekend and while there are no stats on the schools webpage, we have heard that things went quite well for her.
Radford University just announced the other day that they have extended the contract for their new head coach Kevin Fagan. That's not very surprising given his debut season saw the Highlanders clinching the regular season championship and doing quite well in the conference tournament as well. They were actually pretty close to making it to the NCAA tournament, but they got edged out by another team.
While our niece usually finds herself playing in the short stop or outfield position, this past weekend the coach had her filling in at the second base spot. According to what we were told he let her know that he knows she probably isn't comfortable there, but he needs her to get comfortable there. It sounds like he might have some bigger plans in store for her that require her to play second base.
I do know that in the early season practices they were doing speed drills and our niece found herself doing quite well. Where most other players had fallen off, she was still competing with one other girl by the end of the activity.
That's not too bad for a freshman.
We didn't hear how she hit this past weekend, but I do know the coaching staff has been changing a lot of things about her stance and the way she bats, so it will take her some time to get used to that. We did hear that she scored a run from second base which isn't surprising at all given her speed.
I think the final score was a win for Radford 13 to something in the single digits.
I'm really looking forward to the Spring when we can start watching her games via streaming and hopefully get to travel down there to watch her play. Until then, I will be doing my best to keep you updated with the Fall games. I just wish they would update their site a little more. The freshmen still don't even have their photos on the roster page yet.
I'm sure media day is right around the corner though.
They probably don't do it until closer to the regular season.
This is whole new chapter for our girl and we can't wait to see where it takes her!
