Better Luck Next Year

I'm not the sort of person who is afraid to admit when they were wrong, so here it is. I was wrong. I think a couple of posts ago I was talking about the Radford Highlanders softball team and I mentioned that they had already punched their ticket to the NCAA Division I softball tournament. That in fact was not true. The site that I pulled my information from must have jumped the gun, and due to Radford getting bumped out of the Big South Conference tournament, the spot that had been set for them in the NCAA tournament has been given to St. Louis.

Or something like that. I don't honestly remember the team now. I was talking to my niece last night and she said it was definitely a bummer that they didn't make it. She said maybe they will make it next year. I said for sure, because you will be on the team.

I really hope they do. I'm super excited to see her play at the next level.

As I said, Radford had a tough go of it in the Big South tournament. They lost to Winthrop 7 to 4 in a game that went 11 innings. I think I talked about that alreay, but 11 innings is a long time for softball. Especially when you consider an average game is only 7 innings. That's almost two full games.

Since it is double elimination, they then had to play Longwood who they beat 3 to 1. That win kept them alive, but it moved them back into the elimination bracket and had them facing off against Winthrop again. Unfortunately, history repeated itself and though the game didn't go 11 innings, early in the 7th Winthrop scored what would end up being the winning run and the Highlanders fell 1 to 0.

Meanwhile, you also might recall that the Tiffin Dragons had made their way to the NCAA Division II tournament. Unfortunately, they also had a rough go of it falling to University of Indianapolis 2 to 1 in 9 innings. This put them in the elimination bracket where they had to face off against that lousy team from Hillsdale College again. Unfortunately, the Dragons bats were silent and they dropped the game 3 to 0. It was a short but historic run for the Dragons. Something that hasn't been done in over a decade.

It's unfortunate because their bats were so hot in the regular season, but in the post season when they really needed them, they kind of died off. I think the pitching was still on point, but the ladies just couldn't get any solid hits. It's too bad, but I look forward to seeing if they can keep this level of play up in next season.

Those loses set my alma mater SVSU up for a Super Regional match up against University of Indianapolis on Thursday of this week. You better believe I am going to be checking it out if they are broadcasting it!
