A Tragic Comedy...

The word unconventional is the first thing that comes to mind when I think back about the past weekend watching college football. My wife and I were camping at a state park in northern Michigan and the weather was chilly, but pleasant.
I had a roaring fire sitting to the right of me, a drink to the left of me, and my little Viewsonic portable LED projector streaming the football games via a Roku stick on the side of our travel trailer. It wasn't the best canvas for something like this, but we made it work. It actually looked a lot better as the night settled in.
As the title suggests, the games this past weekend were something of a tragedy and a comedy all rolled together. It was just ridiculous. So ridiculous in fact that a long time coach actually lost his job over it.
I'll get to that in a second though.
Number 19 South Florida earns the price for most points scored in the top 25 this week with a massive 63 to 36 win over North Texas. Ohio State stays at number 1 with a big win over Illinois 34 to 16 that knocked the Fighting Illini out of the top 25. Number 6 Alabama had a close game against number 16 Missouri, but the Crimson Tide were able to secure the victory 27 to 24.
I was really pulling for Missouri on that one.
Pittsburgh flooded Florida State with reminders of last season after a 34 to 31 victory at FSU. After their early season win against Bama, The Seminoles have really went off the rails. It's sad to see. I was really cheering for FSU this year.
Number 5 Ole Miss had a close scrape with Washington State, but came away with the 24 to 21 victory, and number 21 Texas finally found a bit of swagger beating number 14 Oklahoma 23 to 6. That's two big wins for Texas in what has been a kind of let down year for the fans. The good news is, this could be the corner that turns things around for the Longhorns.
Indiana moves up to the number 3 spot after their amazing 30 to 20 win over Oregon who falls to the number 8 spot. It appears Indiana is the team that everyone expected Penn State to be this year. I've never been much of a Hoosier fan in the past, but they definitely have my attention now. This game was so good watching them basically dominate the Ducks at Oregon.
After sitting near the top for several weeks at the beginning of the season, Iowa State finds themselves out of the top 25 after a 24 to 17 loss to Colorado.
Tennessee had a close scrape with Arkansas, but moved up to number 11 with the 34 to 31 win.
Meanwhile, Michigan now finds themselves out of the top 25 as well after their 31 to 13 loss to number 20 USC in Southern Cali. That was a great game to watch as well and I am so glad that U of M lost. Maybe this will shut those annoying fans up a bit.
BYU moves up to number 15 and stays undefeated after a close double overtime game against Arizona. That 33 to 27 victory was hard fought and well deserved.
Speaking of Penn State, they lost 22 to 21 to Northwestern this past weekend and as a result of losing pretty much every Big Ten game they have played this season, their head coach was fired. It's kind of sad to see how far Penn State has fallen after they were building something so good there. Like I said, it's a tragic comedy.
Speaking of huge loses and tragic comedies, Michigan State got hammered on homecoming weekend 38 to 13 by UCLA. That's right, the same UCLA who had won zero games going into their meeting last weekend against Penn State. I've pretty much given up hope on Michigan State this season. Their second year coach has some tough questions to answer as expectations were quite high for him.
Michigan State has Indiana, then Michigan on the horizon. This doesn't bode well for them.
Hats off to Nebraska though who now find themselves in the number 25 spot in the nation after their win over Maryland this past weekend.
