Laundry
Watching the laundry on my neighbor’s balcony blow in the wind, I wonder, will it blow away, and in that thought, I recall my first year in Japan, when my friend and I lived on the second story of an apartment building, above the language school where we worked.
I don’t recall exactly, but I think I may have been a little more modest than my friend and decided to dry my underwear indoors on a rack, rather than hang it outside to dry. Living near a river meant that our apartments were subject to strong winds and it wasn’t uncommon for students’ mothers to find a surprise on their cars after their children’s English lessons were finished.

a windy day
Headphones
Rushing out the door in the morning, quickly wanting to choose a soundtrack for the ride to work then plug in my earphones and go, I reach into my pocket and, more times than not, find the most complicated puzzle. How did it get there?
and yet
this knot in my headphones
Change
August, I often think of this month as the peak of summer, and yet, having only begun, this year I find myself noticing a myriad of signs that we are already transitioning into fall.
in the birdsong this morning
a hint of fall
Connections
How interesting that memories separated by 30 years of time and a distance that spans halfway around the world could be connected by a single scent.
I smell the summers of Maine
here in Japan
Unfamiliar
Once again, a surprise this week. First the sounds of what seem like angry shouting, and then flashing red lights seeping through the space between the curtains and the ceiling.
Unlike in other countries, many houses in Japan are built within a meter or two of the road, so when an ambulance parks in front of your house, it is right there, sometimes even close enough to reach out the window and touch.
Seeing an ambulance in the midst of an emergency response, parked right in front of my house as if it had come for me or one of my family members was very strange. Despite knowing exactly what an ambulance looks like, I found myself taken aback by how different an ambulance looked in this situation.
so this is how one looks
in front of my house
Rice
Again, signs that, despite the hot afternoons, summer is passing.
a soft golden hue
signs of change
Throughout the Day
How many good ideas did I have today? How many interesting things did I see? How many things were said to me? How many favors were asked of me? How many people did I see or talk to? How many times did I smile, and what prompted those smiles?
in the course of a day
forgotten
Fantastic haikus. I liked this one because it captures a feeling of nostalgia.
Thank you for commenting. It was a surprising scent and feeling to encounter while taking a short walk on my lunch break.

Great work! It's nice to see the inspiration behind each one. I think I would dry my underwear inside as well, but to each their own...
I know what you mean how you can connect where you from to where you are. Having lived around the world at different times some things remind you of where you grew up. And I can already see fall trying to sneak, since I'm on vacation by the mountains right now!
The ambulance would be a different experience, at night that would light up the whole place it sounds like. When they designed the city I'm sure modern day realities wasn't their primary concern!
Great post as always, hope things are going well!
I’m always amazed by how smells can so quickly transport us through space and time.
I think I can connect that pine smell to a lot of places, but there was something specific about the scent the other day that I connected with the summer vacations I took to Maine as a kid.
I would love to be able to take my family to the same cabin on the same lake. It was such a unique and beautiful place.
best short poem ever "(1)

I really enjoy the mix of prose and poetry. I love how the poetry distills the essence of the prose to just enough for the image to shine.
The mix of prose and poetry seems to be more popular among everyone. I’ll have to try to do this more often.

I was hooked by the questions you asked inside the section "Throughout the Day". Each flooded my mind with streams of information. And therefore I'm personalizing #7 as follows:
That’s an interesting way to put those poems together.
I don’t know why, but I’m a little surprised that you didn’t decide to use progress or possibility or quantum or growth or some other word instead of change.
I really enjoyed reading your post. I like the way you did the set up before each poem.
I always wonder if the introduction is necessary or not. Based on comments I’ve received in the past, this seems to be the format that most people prefer. Maybe I’ll start making this the norm for my posts.
I don't know if it is necessary or not to get your meaning as I always seem to know what your poems are talking about, but it is kind of interesting and fun to see a little snippet of your thoughts behind your creations.
nice and witty haikus. love them
I’m glad you liked them. Thank you for commenting. 😊
