The Return of Our Montana Maverick

Let me set the scene for you: it’s an overcast day at home, as wel as in Amsterdam, the kind of weather that makes you wonder if the sun got lost in a philosophical debate with the clouds. But none of that mattered because today was mission-critical. We were heading to Schiphol Airport, the epicenter of Dutch hustle and bustle, to pick up our youngest son, the adventurer, the cowboy-in-training, the guy who’s decided Montana is where his heart beats fastest.

The Drive to Glory

So there we are, cruising down the highway like the cast of a family heist movie. Only, instead of stealing diamonds, we were here to retrieve a gem. (Cheesy, I know, but hey, this is my blog.) The anticipation in the car was palpable. “What if he’s brought a cowboy hat?” someone mused. Spoiler: no cowboy hat, but plenty of stories.

Montana, The Love Story

Let’s get one thing straight: our boy had an epic time in Montana. It wasn’t just the vast landscapes, the crisp mountain air, or even the classic American diners (though he did rave about the milkshakes). Nope, the real headline was: he’s got a girlfriend there. Yes, folks, Montana is officially a state of both great scenery and budding romance. And if you’re wondering, yes, he’s already planning his next trip back. “She’s amazing,” he said. We missed him, but clearly, Montana gave him something (or someone) special.

Schiphol Shenanigans

Schiphol Airport is a place where dreams take off and jet lag lands. Walking through the terminal, we were greeted by Christmas lights and hurried travelers, creating a surreal mix of festivity and chaos. It’s like Santa’s workshop but with baggage trolleys instead of elves. I half-expected someone to yell, “Flight 303, last call!” every five minutes.

We got to the arrivals hall, and there he was, rolling his suitcase like a seasoned traveler who’d just conquered the wild west. Cue the hugs, the laughs, and a little mistiness (I’ll never admit if it was me). Honestly, it was one of those moments you wish you could freeze and frame.

The Aftermath

Now, here’s the kicker: the boy’s jet-lagged, but he’s already talking about returning to Montana. If I didn’t know better, I’d say Montana’s running some sort of secret program to convert Europeans into cowboys and cowgirls. And, you know what? I get it. The kid’s found something—or someone—that lights him up, and that’s worth celebrating.

We’re glad to have him back (for now). The house feels whole again, at least until the next Montana adventure calls. As we drove back home from Schiphol under the Amsterdam night sky, I couldn’t help but smile. Life, with all its twists, turns, and unexpected cowboy romances, is pretty damn beautiful.

I'm really glad to hear that he arrived safely, even if he's already half way back to Montana! That's one state that I've never visited! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Well, it appears to be pretty amazingly beautiful!
But I won't visit it either most probably... There is a possibility that we might go to Phoenix, Arizona though..

Oh, yes, that's true, it is very beautiful! Hahaha...I lived in Arizona for 9 years, in Tempe, but I went to Phoenix many times! Why might you go to Phoenix? If you go in Summer, it will feel like you're in an actual oven...lol! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Lol!!! An oven still beats a clouded freezing puddle :-D
Well, the youngest son, of course, has a girlfriend in the US. Now Montana, but they will be moving somewhere this year, to Arizona... So most probably, the next time he will go to the US, it will be destination Phoenix. And the possibility exists that we will join him then :-)

Hahaha...yes, it is a bit more pleasant! I used to ride my bike for miles in that heat, and without water either...lol! Oh, OK, I see, well cool then! Arizona is also quite a different world! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Yup, I can imagine it is quite something different…
Does it have a lot of nature? I imagine it being vast desserts with some cactusses here and there :-)

Oh yes, Arizona is huge, so lots of nature everywhere, and yes, if it's not in the mountains, it's usually vast deserts, with lots of giant saguaro cactus. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

The mountains are often pine forests, with snow in winter! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

In Arizona even??? Ok... Now that sounds pretty amazing! And tempting! Because I would assume that the temperature on the ground level are still pretty ok in winter, and only the mountains are freezing cold?

Yes indeed! That's how it is around Flagstaff and Prescott. They are gorgeous areas. Also, for the sheer beauty of the area, you should visit Sedona. My mom and brother live in Arizona, in Clarkdale and Scottsdale. Yes, the deserts only get cold at night in winter, whereas in the mountains there are feet of snow! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Okay... Sounds pretty lovely actually :-D
From what I heard from my boy, there is an incredibly vast amount of open space (so... nature) in the states. Something that is totally unbelievable for us here, especially in Belgium, and especially in Flanders. Here in the (very rural!!!) area, I can't walk (walk! not ride a bike, drive a car, walk!) for 30 minutes without seeing at least 5 houses.
If you go to the southern part of the country, the French speaking part, it's different, but still, you wouldn't be able to walk for 1, maybe 2 hours without passing by a village.
If you then try to image walking for days without seeing a single soul, let alone a house... boy...

Yes, it is certainly that! Yes, that's true, the States has huge tracts of wildlands, though it does depend on where you are. Yeah, Europe has been densely populated for a good long time, so there aren't many areas with large, unbroken areas of wilderness. Experiencing that may change your life! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

I think it certainly can... Already noticed that from my son, who went to Montana, he was impressed about the large areas of nature. And he's missing it like hell since he's back...

See, exactly that! Once you experience greater dimensions of what's possible, and this holds true in any area, it's very difficult to go back to the former more restrictive state. 😁🙏💚✨🤙
