The Amityville Horror: A True Story

George and Kathy Lutz moved into 112 Ocean Avenue on December 18th. 28 days later, they fled in terror.
I just finished this book about the infamous Amityville haunted house, and it was pretty terrifying! 😱
If you've never heard the lore, the Amityville massacre was a horrifying event that happened back in 1974. A lovely family by the name of the DeFeos occupied the house until one fateful night, on November 13th, when the oldest child, Ronald DeFeo Jr., inexplicably murdered his entire family. He killed 6 people, including his 4 younger siblings. When questioned as to why he committed such a heinous act, Robert could only say that, "The voices told me to do it..."
The Amityville Horror, then, follows the story of the next unfortunate family to reside in the house: the Lutzes, which include father George, mother Kathy, and their 3 young children. When they discover a 3-story, 6 bedroom Dutch Colonial, with a heated swimming pool and boathouse, for only $80,000 (about $455,000 today), they immediately move in without question! 🤪

Well, not necessarily... They are finally informed by the real estate agent about the massacre within the home. Yet, this does not deter them! 😩 On December 18th, the Lutz family moves into their new home -- children, dog, and all...
However, it doesn't take long for strange things to start happening, with perhaps the earliest signs manifesting within the family. George, a normally well groomed man, abruptly stops shaving, showering, and going into work. He begins waking up at 3:15AM every night, and reserves a strange obsession with the boathouse. The parents both become extremely moody, blowing up over the simplest things. They can never seem to get warm! The children fight with one another.
Other occurrences take place around the house. The toilets become stained with black paint. Doors and windows are blown off their hinges! Hundreds of flies show up in the dead of winter. The telephone line becomes obstructing, preventing calls from coming in or out. An unseen force attacks Kathy multiple times. Things mysteriously disappear, and inanimate objects move on their own! The sounds of an entire invisible marching band erupt from the living room. Kathy experiences physical alterations to her face and body! Green ooze leaks from the wall!
"She couldn't even tear her eyes away from the demon with horns and a white peaked hood on its head. ... She saw that half of its face was blown away, as if hit with a shotgun blast at close range."
Perhaps worst of all is the daughter, Missy, becomes very susceptible to the spirits in the house. She repeatedly tells her family about "Jodie," a demon who takes on the form of a pig in order to communicate with her.
"Staring back at her were a pair of unblinking red eyes! ... the flashlight picked up a line of footprints, extending clear around the corner of the house. No man had made those tracks. The prints had been left by cloven hooves -- like those of an enormous pig."

One day, George decides to look into the history of their home. He finds that "the Shinnecock Indians used land on the Amityville River as an enclosure for the sick, mad, and dying. ... they did not use this tract as a consecrated burial mound because they believed it to be infested with demons." On top of this, an infamous devil worshipper had "set up residence within 500 feet of where George now lived, continuing his alleged devil worship. ... he was buried somewhere on the northeast corner of the property."
The Lutzes also discover a hidden room in the basement that reeks of blood and excrement! 😳 George finds the covered entrance to a well inside this hidden room, and a medium informs him that this is where the demons are coming from!
It is only after the demons attack one of their sons that the family finally tries to leave. However, their car won't start, and a huge storm blows in, so they are forced to stay another night. While everyone is asleep, an unseen force pins George down on the bed and steps all over him!
"He could feel the pain from the blows. Oh, God! he thought. They're hooves! It's an animal!"
In the morning, another demon tries to attack the children, so the family hurries into the car once more and are finally able to leave! 🙏
"It was seven o'clock on the morning of January 14th, 1976; the 28th day the Lutzes had lived in 112 Ocean Avenue."
All in all, this was a great book! I remember first hearing about the Amityville massacre when I was a child, and I was always very intrigued by the event.

STOPUuh I've only watched the movies but I'm very into horror stories especially if involves ghosts!! I must read the book 😍
I never used to believe in ghosts, but since becoming religious, this book left me feeling disturbed! 🥶
Thank you for your comment, and have a great weekend!
Your review gave me chills! 😱 I haven't read the book, although the Amityville story is obviously legendary and I've seen a movie or two, but the written details sound much more brutal.
It's shocking that it all seems real; that's what keeps you thinking about it all at night. I'm adding it to my reading list, though I'll probably have to read it with the lights on. Thanks for sharing!
I never even realized there were recent movies dedicated to the event until I did research, so I'm excited to check those out next! 😄
But you are right, if the paranormal exists, it's unnerving to think there is something stronger than us that we cannot even begin to fight... Thank you for your comment, and enjoy your weekend 🙏
This is one of my favorite horror books because of its powerful narrative impact; it makes you feel like you're inside the story. I was especially terrified by that final chase scene when the family was trying to escape the house and saw that tall, hooded figure stalking them.
I agree, I think the author did a great job of capturing the horror element. He didn't let things linger, he just moved from one incident to the next 😱
