I recently read the original story of Pinocchio, the one written in 1893 -- and whatta treat it was! As a young child, I grew up with the theatrical adaptation of the book, so this held some wonderful memories for me.

(Not the Disney version either; I grew up with the Johnathan Taylor Thomas version 😂 You know the kid from Home Improvement? Uhhawaahgh?!!? 🥴)

Uhhawaahgh?!!?)

Anyway, the original story is quite a bit different from the watered down versions, although the moral ultimately remains the same: obey good advice, and don't give into bad influences.

The story unfolds with a woodcutter about to work on a piece of driftwood, only every time he tries carving it, a peculiar voice cries out in pain... Gepetto arrives and tells the woodcutter he wants to make a puppet, so the woodcutter gives him the piece of wood.

(All photos are from my copy of the book)

Gepetto goes home and carves a little boy puppet. He names him Pinocchio. However, as soon as he finishes making the puppet, Pinocchio takes off into the street! There, he and Gepetto encounter a policeman, who arrests Gepetto for threatening the poor puppet.

After being reunited (and having burnt off his feet), Pinocchio attempts to go to school, but is distracted by a puppet show. The puppet master is astonished with Pinocchio's nature, and he gives him 5 gold pieces to take home to Gepetto. However, along the way, Pinocchio is approached by the villainous Fox and Cat. They tell him that if he plants his gold in the Field of Miracles, soon he will have a TREE of gold!

While traveling to the Field, Pinocchio is attacked by two assassins in disguise -- it is Fox and Cat! They threaten him for his gold, and when Pinocchio doesn't hand it to them, they hang him! 😱 Fortunately, the Blue Fairy saves him after the villains depart.

Soon a dove arrives, and he informs Pinocchio that Gepetto intends to sail the seas to find him. Pinocchio arrives at the shore, but he is too late to stop Gepetto...

So, Pinocchio finally starts attending school. He gets into a quarrel with his classmates, the police try detaining Pinocchio, their dog starts to chase him, Pinocchio saves the dog from drowning at sea, then Pinocchio gets caught in a fishing net and the dog saves him from being eaten by the Green Fisherman!

The Blue Fairy notices Pinocchio's good improvement and promises that he shall be a real boy! However, on the day of his party, his schoolmate Lamp Wick, invites him to come to the Country of Playthings. After several months there, the boys turn into donkeys!

Pinocchio is sold to be skinned into a drum, but when his owner attempts to drown him, Pinocchio turns back into a puppet! It is here that he escapes and is swallowed by a giant dogfish!
(And I had to look that one up myself -- a dogfish is a species of shark, albeit a small variety of one.)

Pinocchio miraculously finds Gepetto in the fish's stomach -- he has been stuck there for 2 years! 😱 Together the two of them climb out of the giant's mouth, and Pinocchio swims them both to shore!

On the way home, they encounter Fox and Cat, who are nothing more than helpless beggars now. Gepetto falls ill, and Pinocchio begins to work in order to provide and take care of Gepetto. In the end, the Blue Fairy has witnessed Pinocchio's good progress, and finally turns him into a real boy!

It is fascinating to discover the original fables and compare them to our Disney sanitized version of today.
In the fable of Snow White, our heroine's sleep was a metaphor of her death, an angel revived/resurrected her and brought her to the shining kingdom, a metaphor for heaven.

Oh my, so Snow White actually died in the original? 😱 Was there still a Prince Charming, or what have you?

Thank you for your comment, I always appreciate your kind words

I think Prince Charming was represented as the Angel of Death.
If so I hope it'd be like John Dye from the TV series, "Touched by an Angel" who played the role of the Angel of Death.

It's a good read, and the author made it humorous at certain times 😄 which is great, otherwise it would have been a bit morbid!

Thank you for your comment, happy reading 📚
