My husband and I are raising two beautiful girls together, and as a woman, I have already decided there are several important things they must do to make it in this life.

Mi esposo y yo estamos criando a dos hermosas niñas juntos, y como mujer, ya he decidido que hay varias cosas importantes que deben hacer para triunfar en esta vida.

#1. Drugs: Not Even Once

I will not be liberal when it comes to recreational drugs, nor will I be silent on my experiences. I have nothing to hide. My children will hear firsthand of just how quickly drugs can deprive you of everything: money, friends, joy, purpose.. I understand that I cannot control my children forever, and I know that soon they will make their own decisions as adults. I can only pray that my lived experience is enough to make them see the truth.

1. Drogas: Ni una sola vez

No seré liberal con las drogas recreativas ni guardaré silencio sobre mis experiencias. No tengo nada que ocultar. Mis hijos experimentarán de primera mano lo rápido que las drogas pueden privarte de todo: dinero, amigos, alegría, propósito... Entiendo que no puedo controlar a mis hijos para siempre y sé que pronto tomarán sus propias decisiones como adultos. Solo puedo rezar para que mi experiencia les baste para hacerles ver la verdad.

#2. Boys Aren't Everything

I have made enough mistakes with men and dating. I never want my daughters to disregard their boundaries for the sake of boys. I want them to understand that being liked means nothing from meaningless people. Love is a wonderful feeling, absolutely, but I will let them know that the right person will arrive at the right time. Honestly, I would tell them to wait until their mid-20s, when the brain has developed more.

#2. Los chicos no lo son todo

He cometido suficientes errores con los hombres y las citas. No quiero que mis hijas descuiden sus límites por el bien de los chicos. Quiero que entiendan que gustar no significa nada para las personas insignificantes. El amor es una sensación maravillosa, sin duda, pero les haré saber que la persona indicada llegará en el momento indicado. Sinceramente, les diría que esperen hasta los veintitantos, cuando su cerebro esté más desarrollado.

#3. But Family IS!

I have lived through enough to understand that this is truth. Family is the meaning of life! It is the reason why we, and every other animal, learns from their mistakes: so that the knowledge to survive gets passed down. We need to make mistakes (and learn!) for the sake of the future children.
Whether my own children want to believe in this truth or not is up to them. After all, I did not see the light until I was 26! But I will always remind them of this truth. If they choose to follow it, I will encourage them to have as many children as possible!

#3. ¡Pero la Familia SÍ!

He vivido lo suficiente para entender que esto es verdad. ¡La familia es el sentido de la vida! Es la razón por la que nosotros, y todos los demás animales, aprendemos de nuestros errores: para que el conocimiento para sobrevivir se transmita. Necesitamos cometer errores (¡y aprender!) por el bien de nuestros futuros hijos.
Que mis hijos quieran creer en esta verdad o no, depende de ellos. Después de todo, ¡yo no vi la luz hasta los 26! Pero siempre les recordaré esta verdad. Si deciden seguirla, ¡los animaré a tener tantos hijos como puedan!

#4. Women are NOT Exempt

Perhaps the hardest lesson will be teaching my children that women can be just as heinous as anyone else. This can be a difficult task when so much of your identity is reflected in a person. What's more, women are more calculated in their manipulations. You could be best friends with an enemy and not even realize it!
My female friendships have consisted of: making fun of my style and looks, talking behind my back, using me for various needs, trying to turn my entire high school against me, trying to turn me against my boyfriend, sleeping with guys that I was interested in... My daughters will learn not to be manipulated by girl power and solidarity with sisters.

#4. Las mujeres NO están exentas

Quizás la lección más difícil sea enseñarles a mis hijas que las mujeres pueden ser tan atroces como cualquier otra persona. Esto puede ser una tarea difícil cuando gran parte de tu identidad se refleja en una persona. Es más, las mujeres son más calculadas en sus manipulaciones. ¡Podrías ser la mejor amiga de un enemigo y ni siquiera darte cuenta!
Mis amistades femeninas han consistido en: burlarse de mi estilo y apariencia, hablar a mis espaldas, usarme para diversos fines, intentar poner a toda mi preparatoria en mi contra, intentar ponerme en contra de mi novio, acostarme con chicos que me interesaban... Mis hijas aprenderán a no dejarse manipular por el poder femenino y la solidaridad con las hermanas.

#5. Always Be True to You!

This is the most important rule; the other four can only exist because of this fifth one. My daughters will learn to be true to themselves -- their identity, their values, their truth, their purpose. They will learn to never give in to spineless emotional manipulation. They will know to never forfeit their boundaries. They will recognize to always trust their guts. Whatever answers my daughters need to receive from life will be inside of them. The answers do not reside with anyone else. They will learn to never ignore their instincts.

#5. ¡Siempre sé fiel a ti misma!

Esta es la regla más importante; las otras cuatro solo pueden existir gracias a esta quinta. Mis hijas aprenderán a ser fieles a sí mismas: a su identidad, a sus valores, a su verdad, a su propósito. Aprenderán a nunca ceder a la manipulación emocional cobarde. Sabrán que nunca deben renunciar a sus límites. Reconocerán que siempre deben confiar en su intuición. Las respuestas que mis hijas necesiten recibir de la vida estarán dentro de ellas. Las respuestas no residen en nadie más. Aprenderán a nunca ignorar sus instintos.
