Walks In Balchik
Walking and not only, any travel, offers a great chance to observe what is happening around us, in the small space, right next to us, micro let's say, but also in perspective, macro, as far and wide. Here macro is not taken in its photographic sense even if besides the walk only photography still counts!
Make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss.
This is one of the recommendations made by @tattoodjay for those who prefer walking and are used to sharing impressions and photos in his community, Wednesday Walk, every Wednesday, like this one today.
Among dozens of walks I made in Balchik I have chosen a few images that I think are worth seeing and memorizing in this little travel diary.
For a more exact location of the place of this walk, I have to say that Balchik is a small town, a resort on the Black Sea in Bulgaria. I have to say that I live in the south of Romania, in Bucharest, and in order to do some of the most pleasant walks of my life I have to drive almost 300 km, which is not so easy if I take into account some realities. I know that only half of this distance is highway but I like the other part more, the local roads, less comfortable, but which let me see the places more closely. On top of that, my age and the age of my car I can say are more hindrances than encouragements to hit the road! However, the aforementioned are still not an insurmountable obstacle, thankfully!
The sea in front of the resort is lined with such jetties that let you go forward into the water without getting your clothes wet. For walkers and fishermen, but also for a solitary rest under the sun and listening to the waves.
Balchik is located in a small bay on the Black Sea. A white pier with a gazebo at the end can be considered the middle of the resort, it is the place called Nomad.
On one side it is bordered by a small port from which grain is exported.
On the opposite side, you can see the next resort, Albena, with its white, modern hotels and long beaches.
Balchik has only a few small beaches and for this reason, it is preferred more for walking and resting. However, those who want to sit in the sun by the sea find a place here too.
This young mother wanted her baby of just a few months to hear the waves and smell the breeze. Of course, the baby doesn't understand anything now, but I think he will be a sea lover all his life!
Another mother, more mature and who, unfortunately, cannot be seen in the photo because she was covered by the image of her boy, wants in such a beautiful way to get her children used to love both the sea and reading. Wonderful!
The Balchik has abundant vegetation. The climate is almost Mediterranean and this is one reason why I choose to travel here every year, usually twice a year, at the beginning and end of the year.
Wild flora and so beautiful, I would love to have such flowers in my garden.
Balchik has, apart from the sea, a very special place which is often the main reason why many tourists choose to travel here.
Botanic Garden Balchik includes the Architectural park complex "The Palace", Protected Area Botanic Garden-Balchik, Garden "Nursery" and Expositional Greenhouse.
The Palace is a large domain that belonged to the kingdom of Romania and where, by the will and under the supervision of Queen Mary of Romania, a castle, six villas, and a huge and beautiful garden were built.
The gardens surrounding the Castle are very extensive, they were laid out in the 30s of the last century and because of this, the trees are imposing. Greenery is the master here.
Old stone crosses underline the Orthodox Christian faith of the Romanians and the fact that Queen Mary wanted to be buried in this place after her death. The Queen died in 1938 and her heart was buried here for only two years, until 1940, when the domain passed into Bulgarian possession.
The villas built here were dedicated to the six children of the queen but they did not enjoy them very much because after 1940 the region of southern Dobrogea, where Balchik is located, was retroceded by Romania to Bulgaria.
The remaining gardens of the Queen were transformed into the Botanical Garden. A well-tended and attractive botanical garden.
One can easily see the taste in the landscaping of both the Queen and the architect. All we can do is enjoy the view!
Flowers, strange flowers! Could they be onion flowers?
People and flowers. Groups of tourists come in waves and fill the botanical garden. It's early June and not all the plants are mature yet.
There are many springs in these gardens. They have been captured and sent in different directions, and are both pleasant to look at and useful for watering plants. On either side of this small canal are, as if on guard, huge cypress trees!
All walks come to an end, even this one that was so enjoyable. Still, the feet hurt.
The end of the walk, like any end, should be accompanied by a flower, as our colleague @dswigle has long been trying to teach us by saying #alwaysaflower!

And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Thank you!
A historical and greeny place is behind the beach of Balçık. I think Balçık wouldn't be as hot as the any town in the south, thus it would offer a more suitable summer holiday.
I think so too. I wasn't there at the height of summer.
How are you dear friend @bluemoon good morning
What a charming town to visit and walk its streets.
You have captured beautiful views from there, the laughing nature is really beautiful
I appreciate you sharing these photos.
have a beautiful afternoon
It's a place that helps you find beautiful views. Thank you!
A very beautiful beach, it must be very comfortable to relax there
Yes, it is. Thank you!
Apart from knowing the things happening around us, walking helps us to see and explore. That's basically why I love to walk
Your pictures are so beautiful
Thank you!
I love that you named it the Balchick Series! It is like a whole chapter of your life, and very fitting! Somehow, I imagined you moving there someday, leaving Buxharest in the rearview mirror. Ha! Not really, but, it was a pleasant thought for a moment.
Your walks through Balchik are such a pleasure! Starting at the beach is always a good idea! You can immediately spot the sun worshippers, the ones that will take their piece of sunshine, wherever it is. The mother giving her baby fresh air and sunshine! How I love that! We lived on the coast and my mother would take a baby pram (or baby buggy) a push it out to the front porch for a nap. The baby would sleep for hours, the salt air, mixed with the sound of the sea. She always napped her children out on the porch, sometimes in the winter as well, bundled up. We were healthy kids. :) Probably why we love the sea, all of us.
The jetty is a great place to fish too. :) I like to sit on it and enjoy the water and waves...
I am always sad for the Queen, she loved it so much there, and for it to be taken like a losing chess piece... I know they say that all is fair in love and war, but, I don't believe it. I like how they created the canal in the Botanical Gardens, that is such a great idea! The picture that I love best is the cross among the trees, such a peaceful sight. To be buried in such loveliness!
The flowers that you pointed out are allum. I have those in my garden too, but, they are purple. They look kind of silly to me as they have no leaves and I always want to pull them up when they start appearing... I have done that., for more years than I care to admit.
Le sigh.
Thank you for including the flowers! @alwaysaflower! Of course, it makes it special to me! A wonderful #WednesdayWalk!
I titled this series Balchik because I realized that I like to write about this place the most. I realize that I am repeating myself, although the historical facts I cannot change, instead I try to use other photos and other information. I think many are bored or worse, I think I recycle. Who knows?
For a long time, it seemed to me that it couldn't be true that someone lived so close to the sea. Only in American movies have I seen. So you were one of those movie characters who grew up by the sea, who saw the sea through the window! Something magical, I don't know how much you kids realize that it's something special.
I thought of moving to Balchik myself. I don't think it would have been right... I'm afraid I'm confusing vacation with everyday life.
So they're called allum. You have purple. I know the purple ones and I like them better than the white ones. Magda likes them, I don't have an opinion about them.
Thank you, Denise! As always, you extracted everything from my post and I'm glad you liked it.
such a cool selection of images showing how beautiful and interesting the place is
the gazebo on the white pier is cool
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
I thank you for making this possible in your community. I am trying to change the way I post here and this is the start I hope I can improve.
You have always find very great beautiful and historical places for walk. Its very helpful to us to increase our knowledge alot. Thanks for sharing.
How sublime are those botanical gardens complete with intricate waterways. I love wandering these ancient paths. As for the sea walk, just the name Nomad would invite me to visit. And splash. As it probably will that baby one day
The gardens are sublime, as you rightly say, and different, so everyone must find what they like. I like how you linked to the child sleeping on the beach and not yet knowing what passion for the sea awaits him in the future.
Thank you
I'm so glad, @buckaroobaby, that you got the delegation, thanks again @zuerich, and I hope it's useful to you. If you don't know, just for that reason I tell you and I hope you don't mind, it's good to do the cure and vote every day until your HP drops to 80%, then take a break until it gets close to 100% again.
Oh I will never turn away good advice. Thank you for taking the time and making the vote @bluemoon. Also for such an amazing delegation @zuerich.
A wonderful weekend to you both
I can understand why you like that place so much if its essence is what you have captured in your photographs.
I am glad that those little obstacles are not insurmountable and let you enjoy that beautiful place a couple of times a year, hehe.
Thanks for sharing :)
Only just come across this via Curangel, Great captures, I spent sometime in Balchik last year on my travels round the Balkans I was lucky enough to stay in one of the lodges in the Botanical gardens, brought back some happy memories. from flowers to beer overlooking the sea.
I'm glad someone here can confirm that Balchik is a special place. I have not yet managed to stay in the botanical garden but will try in the future. Thank you!
You’re welcome, I loved it!
