The best country I have visited is...
The best country I have visited is... Bulgaria! It took me a while to think about it to be sure that the choice is the closest to the truth. This week's Weekend Engagement comes with this suggestion - question: The best country (?).
The choice wasn't hard because I'm a big traveler and have a rich list of countries visited. There were only a few, some of them on the run.
I had to choose between Bulgaria and Greece!
Two Balkan countries, the first neighboring Romania, the country where I live, and the second neighboring Bulgaria.
The choice was hard because Greece has always been a dream for me, a place with a unique climate, landscape, and way of life, from what I could see live so far. Just the fact that I don't know the country very well, I have only been three times, to the same place, from one of the thousands of islands of the Greek archipelago made me unsure of my choice. I want to be as objective as possible, although this choice can only be subjective.
On the other hand, I have been to Bulgaria dozens of times and I think that this helps me get to know the country and its inhabitants better. Even when I traveled to Greece I had to cross Bulgaria.
The main interest that made me travel to these two countries was the sea. Seaside holiday! For those who live far from the sea, the fascination for it is common, I think. I say this when I think that all my friends are attracted to the sea.
I think I chose Bulgaria both as compensation and as a desire to be forgiven. Why am I saying this?
Because during school, as a teenager, in the 1970s, I had a deep and unjustified aversion to Bulgaria and its inhabitants. An influence probably received from the environment, a somewhat general disregard. Bulgarians were characterized as having wide necks (probably because they were athletic) and as vegetable growers. I, like a stupid child, thought the same as the others, believing what was said then in Romanian society, which probably believed itself to be superior.
My surprise was great when I traveled to Bulgaria for the first time. Suddenly I discovered some pleasant and hardworking people. Friendly and relaxed. I am referring first of all to those in the tourism sector, with whom I interacted the most, given that the reason for the trip was always related to vacation. Seaside holiday. I found then and in all the following years that my compatriots were under the Bulgarians. Me too probably. Thus I suddenly changed my opinion and became an admirer of these people. I told friends and acquaintances at home about my new perception of our neighbors, many did not believe me but then, slowly, slowly they had to prove me right.
Bulgaria, which is a small country, about half the size of Romania, has a wonderful and varied relief. Mountain, sea, plain, hills... just like in Romania, which is also a very beautiful country, but it has something more.
I mean, it doesn't have... It doesn't have that many inhabitants!
It is a pleasure to drive on the roads of Bulgaria. Few cars, even fewer people, and almost deserted villages. Driving in these conditions is pleasant, and relaxing and you can admire the quiet landscape. Of course, big cities are also crowded here, but as my goal has always been the sea, my journey has always been unforgettable. Unlike in Romania, where the coast is similar in all the resorts, in Bulgaria we found different reliefs and landscapes in different places on the coast.
Places are still far from the transformations made for tourists. Wide, wild beaches, are sought after by those who love the sea and less comfort.
A place where I would have loved to grow up!
The first place I traveled to, a place I usually go to every year, is Balchik. A quiet place, with a special light, given by the white hills that surround it, a place sought by painters, a place where the former Queen of Romania, Maria, had her summer residence.
This is what a queen's residence looked like in the 1930s!
And this is what the same queen's garden looks like.
I think I was coherent enough to make it clear that the most important queen of the Roman kingdom had her summer residence in Bulgaria, in Balchik. If a queen and most painters loved this place, how can I not love it?
I admit that I still have a lot to visit in Bulgaria and I hope I can. Certainly, it is the best country I have visited. I can also say that the cost of living is quite cheap, and the quality of food, is still good. There were some problems with crime but it seems to have been solved. Bulgaria is a country I wanted to move to when I was more active. Now, family obligations prevent me but, depending on life expectancy, who knows what the future holds?
Being a small country nobody would ever prefer to visit but the way you put the beauty in words and all ypur memories, it really made me to look more on internet .... the place is really awesome, ...especially the sofia
Thank you so much for telling me that! I'm so glad to know that I can convey what I feel and have to be received correctly, even more, to arouse curiosity. I haven't even visited Sofia, but I must do it now.
It is interesting to see in how many stereotypes we grow in. Some of us travel and have the chance and the open mind to reconsider. But most people spend their lives believing the (often false) stereotypes that were told to them in young age. We have plenty of them in Greece too!
I haven't been to Bulgaria but it is in my list of places that I want to visit :)
Yes, we grew up with many things wrong but what is happening now is much worse. It's incredible what people can believe now just by reading Facebook or Twitter or Telegram! I think there is no discernment anymore.
I understand that now you live closer to Bulgaria, so it will be easier to travel there.
Wishing you a beautiful summer in your new home!
You are right, some things that people believe nowadays are preposterous, way worst than the misbeliefs or the false stereotypes of the past!
And yes, now that we live on the mainland, a road trip to the Balkans looks a bit closer :)
Thank you very, have a nice summer too!
Thank you!
I vould see the beach in the picture. I love to visit the beach. It makes me feel good
A place like this makes a person remember for the rest of his life, the way you say that when you visited that place, you found it the most beautiful and you will always remember it. All these places looks so beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.
The beach is one of the cool environment to enjoy relaxation
Bulgaria no doubt giving nostalgic view and it's natural Attraction is mind captivating.
I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience in Bulgaria! It sounds like a beautiful country with a lot to offer visitors. I'm especially interested in the wide, wild beaches that you mentioned.
I can understand why you would choose Bulgaria as the best country you've visited. It seems like a place with a lot of natural beauty, friendly people, and a relaxed way of life. I'm sure I would enjoy visiting Bulgaria as well.
I'm also impressed by your willingness to change your opinion about Bulgaria after visiting. It's important to be open-minded and willing to learn about new cultures. I think that's one of the best things about travel.
You're right. I too am glad that I had the chance to get to know the reality of this country and change my opinion, which actually was not mine, but I believed in it. Indeed, traveling opens our minds. Thank you!
I know you have a thing for Balchik, I understand this, as I have a thing about it as well :) Really a lovely and unique place.
Funny to read about the stereotypes. I think it's a neighborly thing and you know, here at the Balkans everyone hates their neighbors in some extent :D
Long story short, there are great and awful people in each country and each nation. If we're lucky. we stumble upon the best ones :)

Totally agree with everything you say.
Balchik is chosen by me for many reasons, an important one is that I can get there relatively easily.
I like that there are people I know who recognize me every time. Let me recommend a small restaurant, the Blue Lion, it's opposite the History Museum. It's only open during the season, approximately 15 June - 15 September. Well-cooked food, fresh, simple, and cheap. This is also a reason to go to Balchik... to eat fresh fish from the Black Sea and some Bulgarian dishes.
Indeed, we Balkan people (and Romania is considered a Balkan country, I say semi-Balkan, with the region of Dobrogea, and with the same customs) are so passionate, we quickly go from love to hate!
You are right, the antidote is education, knowledge, and the chance to find the right people.
Thank you and I wish you a beautiful summer!
Thank you for that recommendation, I'd definitely go to that place next time I visit Balchik ;) Probably in the autumn if everything goes as planned.
Hehe, that's so true, we "light" quite fast sometimes :)
You have a great summer too, I don't think we'll travel that much this summer as we spent big on a recent trip to visit friends in England and Scotland, I have plenty of new photos and places to share though ;)
Greece is very close for us though, so who knows...

Not overrun by tourists makes these places gems to enjoy!
