Planting My 2024 Onions!
Onions are from a family called Alliaceae. they also herbaceous perennial flowering plants and flowers. Sometimes, people know them as Allium.

What Am I Growing?
Onions fall into TWO basic types: LONG DAY, and SHORT DAY Onions.
I know it sounds bizzare, however, SHORT DAYS are actually closer to the equator. Because of the tilt of the Earth's AXIS away from the sun, the Northern hemisphere has longer Days of SUNLIGHT. AND, I live in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus I am planting LONG DAY ONION!

I am planting: Red Beard Bunching, Tokyo White Long Bunching, Red Wethersfield, Utah Yellow, Red Burgundy Long Day, and Pompeii White Onions. Personally, I love using and cooking with Red Onion, so I am planting ore Red than Yellow (typically sweeter) and and than White (typically stronger, more Oniony flavor!)

How Are You Growing?
I grow my onions in 25 Gallon (95 liter) Fabric Grow Bags. I use 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat, and 1/3 soil that's refreshed, from last year's growing. To this, I add a handful of Blood Meal, Bone Meal, both are granular organic fertilizers. This stuff takes about 2 -6 weeks to break down, so I do this a good solid month before I need to plant my SEEDLINGS.

My ONION SEEDLINGS, planted early February.

Most of you know, I prefer to grow my own food, locally. It's healthier for my family, and for the planet. I know what goes into my foods, and what chemicals are NOT in my food. Also, It cuts down on carbon emissions, less trucking, planes, trains, and boats, to get fresh foods to my table.

And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

i use the bulbs and greens as well!
I dehydrate the greens and store them for winter cooking. I store the bulbs all winter and use as needed

I remember learning so much about garlic from you, and now onions. I do like and use a lot of both, and it's fascinating to discover all this that I never really thought about.
Happy gardening 🤗

I always enjoy the videos. No onions for us this year. We might do some green onions.
