Talking about the roles of influencers in our current society is like holding a coin and flipping it. Most often than not, it will land on either side. Meaning, the effect could either be good or bad putting into consideration the concept of duality.

Personally, I'd like to look at influencers as the mirror of society, I'd like to see them as the voice of the voiceless and a ray of hope. Similarly, on the other side of the coin, their actions could be detrimental to societal structure.

But wait! Who is an influencer? And what qualifies as being an influencer?

You see, influencers are individuals who have mastered the act of mental manipulation and the use of various social media platforms for a wider coverage. Influencers are people who have mastered people. They know the tea and know how best to serve it for it to be tasty for mass consumption.

Influencers can also be people who have achieved greater heights up the social ladder and have done well for themselves even in the face of adversities.

The thing with some of these influencers is that while they are busy living a lie for social media validation, they do miss out on their lives. For an easy escape route, some of these individuals create a perfect illusion for themselves to escape their reality.

You'll see an online relationship therapist but probably a victim of domestic violence, you'd see the ballers and the money spenders, the movers and the shakers, the internet sensations, timber and calibre but in reality, they can't afford those things they display online. Some of them do not even have a home, others might not be able to afford two square meals. Then, there are those that we see not repeating outfits on their photos because they probably borrowed the clothing and every other accessory going with iit offline.

The other day, one popular influencer in my country was advising the youth to fake it till they make it, forgetting that fake life is expensive. This is how some of these influencers mislead our youth. When I saw the screenshot of his advice on social media, I quickly questioned, “what happens to the youth that cannot afford this fake life and want to feel amongst their peers who do all sorts to fake it till they make it?”

Well, I remember one internet sensation from way back called Hushpuppi and how he made several Nigerians feel like they were not doing enough. Husbpuppi had the best designers and was always seen in luxury and exotic places. He's known to show off his luxury cars and flaunt wealth while talking down on the poor.

Hushpupi's actions mounted so much pressure on Nigerians who struggled to earn genuinely making them feel like they were failures for not doing enough to earn more.

Eventually, he was caught by the FBI for cyber crime and is currently in jail. However, the damage he has done lingers as young boys despite his unfortunate end, idolise him for being a Pablo Escobar of their time. Some of them even became perpetrators of cybercrime.

Nonetheless, it should be worth noting that since influencers put up this perfect unsuspecting image on the social media space, they become tools to fraudsters who use them as an avenue to scam people.

There was a period on Facebook when some users with lots of followers were influencing for fraudulent brands. These influencers, after being paid, were getting people to invest money in hundreds of millions into a project that they did not do due diligence to check the authenticity. Eventually, the fraudsters made away with people's money after they gathered enough and these influencers went in for it. Some of them paid heavily to get out of the situation as it involved the authorities. Another set lost their credibility and as for the victims? They never got their money back.

Regardless, influencers can be a good thing with their influencing power. They could also have a positive effect on society too. Women have a voice today because of the likes of Hillary Cliton, Chimamanda Adichie, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala etc. Imagine my excitement when Ngozi Okonjo Iweala emerged as the director of world trade. My happiness knew no bounds and I felt if she could do it, certainly I can too. She has just been returned to office meaning she performed exceedingly well and I'm proud to call her my mentor modelling after her.

Studying her biography and seeing that she's a development Economist is what made me major in the Development field. I remember back then when I went for my masters my mommy would always ring in my ear, “hope you are studying the same course as Ngozi Okonjo Iweala? Because you need to be like her or even more.”

You see, being an influencer is not all about the social media frenzy, because we have women in the career world influencing the girl child with their televised and published achievements.

Recently, there was the beauty pageant craze of identity where a partly Nigerian and South African girl Chidinma Adetshina was not allowed to participate in the Miss South Africa beauty pageant because she is not fully South African. She was dragged, she was disqualified and she was discriminated upon.

But, in the face of adversity Chidinma did not give up or doubted herself for a second. It was then that the Nigerian community invited her to come and contest for the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant of which she won. Going forward, she represented Nigeria for the Miss Universe beauty pageant and she came second.

Currently, Chidinma is the new face of hope and determination like I said earlier. Moving on, we have the likes of Chimamanda Adichie being the voice of the girl child and then there is Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and other prominent women who have made a statement and carved a path for other aspiring women to follow.

You know, every time that I read about these women, I get inspired and it is that inspiration that has brought me this far.

Hablar de los roles de los influencers en nuestra sociedad actual es como sostener una moneda y lanzarla. La mayoría de las veces aterrizará en cualquier lado. Es decir, el efecto podría ser bueno o malo teniendo en cuenta el concepto de dualidad.

Personalmente, me gustaría ver a los influencers como el espejo de la sociedad, me gustaría verlos como la voz del sin voz y un rayo de esperanza. Del mismo modo, en la otra cara de la moneda, sus acciones podrían ser perjudiciales para la estructura social.

Verás, los influencers son personas que han dominado el acto de manipulación mental y el uso de varias plataformas de redes sociales para una cobertura más amplia. Los influencers son personas que han dominado a las personas. Conocen el té y saben cuál es la mejor manera de servirlo para que sea sabroso para el consumo masivo.

Los influencers también pueden ser personas que han alcanzado mayores alturas en la escala social y les ha ido bien incluso frente a las adversidades.

~ Lo que pasa con algunos de estos influencers es que mientras están ocupados viviendo una mentira para la validación de las redes sociales, se pierden sus vidas. Para encontrar una ruta de escape fácil, algunos de estos individuos crean una ilusión perfecta para escapar de su realidad.

Verás a un terapeuta de relaciones en línea, pero probablemente sea una víctima de violencia doméstica, verás a los que bailan y a los que gastan dinero, a los que se mueven y a los que agitan, las sensaciones de Internet, la madera y el calibre, pero en realidad, ellos pueden No puedo permitirme esas cosas que muestran en línea. Algunos de ellos ni siquiera tienen una casa, otros tal vez no puedan permitirse dos comidas completas. El otro día, un influencer popular en mi país aconsejaba a los jóvenes fingir hasta lograrlo, olvidando que la vida falsa es cara. Así es como algunos de estos influencers engañan a nuestra juventud. Cuando vi la captura de pantalla de su consejo en las redes sociales, rápidamente me pregunté: "¿Qué pasa con los jóvenes que no pueden permitirse esta vida falsa y quieren sentirse entre sus compañeros que hacen todo tipo de fingir hasta lograrlo?"

Bueno, recuerdo una sensación de Internet de hace mucho tiempo llamada Hushpuppi y cómo hizo que varios nigerianos sintieran que no estaban haciendo lo suficiente. Husbpuppi tenía los mejores diseñadores y siempre fue visto en lugares lujosos y exóticos. Es conocido por mostrar sus autos de lujo y hacer alarde de su riqueza mientras habla con desprecio de los pobres.

Las acciones de Hushpupi generaron tanta presión sobre los nigerianos que luchaban por ganar dinero genuinamente, haciéndolos sentir como fracasos por no hacer lo suficiente para ganar más.

Finalmente, el FBI lo atrapó por delito cibernético y actualmente se encuentra en la cárcel. Sin embargo, el daño que ha causado perdura cuando los jóvenes a pesar de su desafortunado final lo idolatran por ser un Pablo Escobar de su época. Algunos de ellos incluso se convirtieron en perpetradores de delitos cibernéticos.

Sin embargo, vale la pena señalar que, dado que los influencers colocan esta imagen perfecta y desprevenida en el espacio de las redes sociales , se convierten en herramientas para los estafadores que los utilizan como una vía para estafar a la gente.

Hubo un período en Facebook cuando algunos usuarios con muchos seguidores estaban influenciando para marcas fraudulentas. Estos influencers, después de recibir dinero, conseguían que la gente invirtiera cientos de millones de dinero en un proyecto y no hicieron la debida diligencia para comprobar su autenticidad. Al final, los estafadores se llevaron el dinero de las personas después de que reunieron lo suficiente y estos influencers se lanzaron a por ello. Algunos de ellos pagaron mucho para salir de la situación, ya que involucraba a las autoridades. Otro grupo perdió su credibilidad y ¿en cuanto a las víctimas? Nunca recuperaron su dinero.

De todos modos, los influencers pueden ser algo bueno con su poder de influencia. También podrían tener un efecto positivo en la sociedad. Las mujeres hoy tienen voz gracias a personas como Hillary Cliton, Chimamanda Adichie, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, etc. Imaginen mi entusiasmo cuando Ngozi Okonjo Iweala surgió como directora del comercio mundial. Mi felicidad no tenía límites y sentí que si ella podía hacerlo, ciertamente yo también puedo. Ella acaba de regresar a su cargo, lo que significa que se desempeñó extremadamente bien y estoy orgulloso de llamarla mi mentora y seguirla como modelo.

Estudiar su biografía y ver que es economista de desarrollo es lo que me hizo especializarme en el campo del desarrollo. Recuerdo que cuando iba a hacer mi maestría, mi mamá siempre me llamaba al oído: “¿Espero que estés estudiando el mismo curso que Ngozi Okonjo Iweala? Porque necesitas ser como ella o incluso más”.

Verás, ser una persona influyente no se trata solo del frenesí de las redes sociales, porque tenemos mujeres en el mundo profesional que influyen en las niñas con sus logros televisados y publicados.

Recientemente, hubo una locura de identidad por los concursos de belleza en la que a una niña en parte nigeriana y sudafricana, Chidinma Adetshina, no se le permitió participar en el concurso de belleza Miss Sudáfrica porque no es completamente sudafricana. La arrastraron, la descalificaron y la discriminaron.

Pero, ante la adversidad, Chidinma no se rindió ni dudó de sí misma ni por un segundo. Fue entonces cuando la comunidad nigeriana la invitó a participar en el concurso de belleza Miss Nigeria del que ganó. En el futuro, representó a Nigeria en el concurso de belleza Miss Universo y quedó en segundo lugar.

Actualmente, Chidinma es la nueva cara de esperanza y determinación, como dije antes. Continuando, tenemos a personas como Chimamanda Adichie siendo la voz de la niña y luego está Ngozi Okonjo Iweala y otras mujeres prominentes que han hecho una declaración y han abierto un camino a seguir para otras aspirantes a mujeres.

Sabes, cada vez que leo sobre estas mujeres, me inspiro y es esa inspiración la que me ha traído hasta aquí.
