Hello, nature-loving friends! Another new adventure is coming! Today we're going to explore the Sao Lourenço valley, nestled between two mountain ranges called Louro Lourenço. This area is located in the Palmela region, just under 4 km from the castle! I came here with the intention of discovering new orchids. Now that we're in the middle of spring, and during the month of April and May, specific ones are starting to appear, it was a truly productive day, and I discovered about three new species! Let's see what it's all about.🧭🌄

Hola amigos amantes de la naturaleza! se viene otra nueva aventura, hoy vamos a recorrer el valle de "Sao lourenço" entre el medio de dos conjuntos de sierras montanosas llamadas: "Louro, lourenço" esta zona se encuentra en el area de Palmela a poco menos de 4km del castillo! vine con la intencion de descubrir nuevas orquideas ahora que estamos en plena primavera y en este mes de abril-mayo comienzan aparecer unas especificas, en realidad fue productivo el dia y si descubri unas tres especies nuevas! veamos de que se trata.🚙🏔️

I leave you the coordinates of the walk I did: 38.551855, -8.918094, it was in a straight line following the road and making detours to the surroundings to locate orchids, this technique helped me compare which orchids grow near the road where the weeds are very low and which ones grow more towards areas with slightly taller vegetation (5-50cm height), this area is protected, uncrowded and a bit "virgin", it is only touristy so we have a whole open world to explore.🏔️🚙
Te dejo las coordenadas de la caminata que hice: 38.551855, -8.918094, fue en linea recta acompanando la carretera y haciendo desvios hacia los alrededores para localizar orquideas, esta tecnica me sirvio para comparar que orquideas crecen cerca de la carretera donde la maleza es bajisima y cuales crecen mas hacia las zonas con vegetacion un poco mas alta (5-50cm altura), esta zona es protegida, poco concurrida y un poco "virgen", solo es turistica por tanto tenemos todo un mundo abierto para explorar.🌷🗺️

Due to the diverse ecosystems of the Serra da Arrabida, it's normal to find a large number of orchid species here! I'll give you this super interesting fact: Portugal has 55 orchid species in total, and half of them are found where I'm from! The composition of the mountains is calcareous rock, and there are also areas of the mountains where the main rock is silica.
Debido a los diferentes ecosistema que presenta la sierra da arrabida es normal que consigamos una gran cantidad de especies de orquideas aqui! les doy este dato super interesante Portugal tiene 55 especies de orquideas en total, y la mitad de ellas se encuentran en el lugar donde yo estoy! la composicion de la sierra es roca calcarea, tambien hay zonas de la sierra donde la principal roca es silicio

The mountainous relief and the calcareous characteristic of the relief make the soils become basic for the growth of orchids, orchids can grow in soils with basic pH, alkaline, they also have the ability to flourish in soils poor in nutrients, they have adapted to survive in conditions where the calcareous soil has the property of draining water and avoiding too much humidity or flooded places!🚙🏔️🗺️
El relieve montanoso y la caracteristica calcarea del relieve hace que los suelos se tornen basicos para el crecimiento de las orquideas, las orquideas pueden crecer en suelos con pH basicos, alcalinos mismo tambien tienen la capacidad de florecer en suelos pobres de nutrientes, se han adapato para sobrevivir en condiciones donde el suelo carcico tiene la propiedad de drenar el agua y evitar mucha humedad o lugares inundados!🌷🚩🌄

This is a common orchid in Portugal, as you can see on the map. It is distributed as far north as the country. It prefers open, deep soils with an alkaline or basic pH. It is quite adaptable and can grow in very nutrient-poor environments. It is very abundant here in the mountains where I am! It has a minimum tolerable temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and can grow to almost 500 meters high, emphasizing that I am 120 meters above sea level! It blooms from May to June.🚩🧭📕
esta es una orquidea comun de Portugal como observas en el mapa se distribuye hasta en el norte del pais, prefiere terrenos abiertos, profundos, con pH alcalino o basico, bastante adaptativa y puede crecer en entornos muy pobres de nutrientes, es muy abundante aqui en la sierra donde estoy! tiene una temperatura tolerable minima de 11grados, y puede crecer hasta casi 500 metros de altura, recalcando que estoy a 120 sobre el nivel del mar! floresce de mayo a junio.🌄🌷🗺️

Orchid from higher ground📕🌷/Orquidea de terrenos mas elevados🌍🧭
In this area of Palmela I can only see these orchids in the highest areas of the terrain from 150 meters above sea level, at road level I did not see any specimens, this orchid is common prefers alkaline or basic soils, typical of low areas and meadows however it adapts well and can grow to more than 50 cm which gives it adaptability to terrains with many weeds! According to grow up to 250 meters but I recorded a specimen at more than 300 meters. Its flowering goes from February to May so next month we will stop seeing it.📕🧭🚩
en esta zona de Palmela solo consigo ver estas orquideas en las areas mas elevadas del terreno a partir de los 150metros, a nivel de la carretera no vi ningun ejemplar, esta orquidea es comun prefiere suelos alcalinos o basicos, tipica de zonas bajas y praderas sin embargo se adapta bien y puede crecer a mas de 50cm lo que le confiere adaptabilidad a terrenos con mucha maleza! segun crecer hasta los 250metros pero yo registre un ejemplar a mas de 300metros. Su floracion va de febrero a mayo por tanto el proximo mes la dejaremos de ver.🏔️🧭📕

Another common species distributed throughout the country, it's common in areas with a certain elevation. It tolerates both acidic and alkaline soils. The soil can be clayey or rocky. It prefers less humid places and low-lying terrain like meadows! If you look at the photos, I saw several of them on rocks next to the road! This insect species, Dasyscolia ciliata, pollinates it.🌷🧭
Otra especie comun distribuida en varias partes del pais, es comun en zonas con cierta elevacion tolera los suelos acidos y basicos, la tierra puede ser arcillosa o rocosa, prefiere lugares no muy humedos y terrenos bajos como prados! si observas las fotos vi varias de ellas en las rocas al lado de la calle! Dasyscolia ciliata esta especie de insecto es quien la poliniza.🐝🐝

On the trail🌄🌷/Sobre el sendero🌍🧭
This area has a mix of trails that you can do them all! Although one day won't be enough, as some are over 23 km long, you can take advantage and enjoy nature. From here, you have access to the mountain ranges (Gaitero, Lourenco, Louro, and Sao Luis). All have varying altitudes, reaching up to 509 meters at their highest point. Ideal for family walks of all ages, preferably in spring, as summer is very hot.🌍
esta zona tiene una mezcla de senderos que puedes hacerlos todos! aunque un dia no te bastara porque algunos tienen mas de 23km, puedes aprovechar y disfrutar de la naturaleza, desde aqui tienes acceso a las sierras: (gaitero, lourenco, louro, sao luis) todas tienen altitudes variadas llegando hasta los 509metros en su punto mas alto, ideal para andar en familia y todas las edades preferiblemente en primavera, el verano es muy caluroso.🚩🗺️

gracias carino! en realidad a veces se torna medio "tedioso" cuando comienzas a querer profundizar mas sobre la naturaleza en tus viajes pierdes la esencia de disfrutar, entonces si no es para post ni vale la pena jjeje mejor disfrutar y admirar! mi opinion humilde.

55 native species of Orchids found there in Portugal?? Impressive. You put soooooo much work into your posts that beautifully document the region, and it does not go unappreciated. I love the guided tour and wonderful photo arrangements. Great stuff!
We have around 50 species that grow wild here in New Jersey. If I happen to get more time in my life, I would love to do the same and document some of these species. We have what they call the pine barrens and at least 30 or so are unique to that type of environment.

Esta zona es muy bella, con una amplia variedad de orquídeas, me gustaron todas las fotografías, la casa en la cima de la montaña se ve espectacular, desde esa altura se debe ver todo el.paisaje, saludos amigo.
