A Miracle in the Bay of Kotor: Stones, Prayer and Light : Our Lady of the Rocks (Montenegro)🏝️(Karadağ) Kotor Körfezi'nde Bir Mucize: Taşlar, Dua ve Işık : Our Lady of the Rocks

Hello everyone, travel enthusiasts. My favorite thing to write these days is a series from my Balkan Tour trip. Today, I'll be sharing with you one of Montenegro's beauties, Our Lady of the Rocks. It's an artificial island located in the Bay of Kotor, off the coast of Perast, Montenegro. It's also known as the Śkrpjela (Montenegro) Gospel. Back then, sailors placed an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock emerging from the sea and later expanded the island with stones brought from ships. In this case, the island is entirely artificial and man-made. It houses a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. I'll discuss all of this in more detail below. First, I'd like to share a little about my experiences.

O dönemde denizciler denizden çıkan kayaya Meryem Ana ikonasını yerleştirmiş daha sonra gemilerden getirilen taşlarla ada genişletilmiş. Bu haliyle Ada tamamen insan eliyle inşa edilmiş yapay bir adadır. Üzerinden Meryem Ana'ya adanmış bir Katolik kilisesi bulunmakta. Aşağıdaki satırlarda bunların hepsine daha detaylı değineceğim. Önce biraz deneyimlerimizden bahsetmek istiyorum.

As we sailed through the azure waters of the Bay of Kotor, a small island appeared on the horizon, winking at us. It was neither a gift of nature nor a coincidence. It was a miracle, a blend of human hands, faith, and determination. Just a few minutes' boat ride from the coast of Perast, the island seemed to have stepped out of the pages of a fairy tale. The stone church rising above it was a silent witness to centuries of sailors' prayers to the Virgin Mary. For me, the most impressive aspect of the journey to the island was the magnificence of the bay that accompanied us throughout the journey. On one side, the deep green of the mountains, on the other, the endless blue of the Adriatic Sea. It was as if time moved slower here, our hearts momentarily removed from the noise of the world. The air during our visit was a bit chilly, even cold.❄️As the Adriatic Sea breeze brushed against our faces, the sound of the water and the landscapes we encountered filled us with a sense of peace. Boat tours departing from Peras reach the island in 5-10 minutes. The tours are paid, and when we visited, the cost was 5 euros per person. The church on the island and the adjacent museum are also paid, but due to our limited time, we were unable to visit either. According to our guide, the stone church was built in 1632 and contains frescoes of sacred icons dedicated to the Virgin Mary and silver plaques dedicated by sailors. A small museum, built later to accompany the church, displays texts describing the history of Peras sailors, religious objects, paintings, and artifacts from local culture.

Kotor Körfezinin masmavi sularında ilerlerken ufukta beliren küçük bir ada bize göz kırptı. Ne doğanın bir armağanı ne bir tesadüf. İnsan elleriyle inanç ve azmin birleştiği bir mucize gibiydi burası. Perast kıyılarından kalkan teknelerle birkaç dakikada ulaşılan ada sanki masal sayfalarından kopup gelmiş gibiydi. Üzerinde yükselen taş kilise denizcilerin asırlardır Meryem Ana'ya adadığı duaların sessiz şahidi gibiydi. Bence adaya gidişin en etkileyici yanı yolculuk boyunca bize eşlik eden körfezin görkemiydi. Bir yanda dağların koyu yeşili diğer yanda Adriyatik Denizi'nin sonsuz mavisi... Sanki zaman burada daha ağır akıyor kalbimiz bir anlığına dünyanın gürültüsünden uzaklaşıyor gibiydi. Bizim ziyaret ettiğimiz dönemde havalar biraz serin hatta soğuk sayılırdı. ❄️Adriyatik Denizi'nin rüzgarı yüzümüze çarparken suyun sesi ve karşılaştığımız manzaralar içimizi huzurla doldurmuştu. Peras'tan kalkan tekne turlarıyla adaya ulaşım 5-10 dakikalık bir mesafede. Turlar ücretliydi ve bizim gittiğimiz dönemde kişi başı 5 Euro idi. Adadaki kilise ve hemen bitişiğindeki müze de ücretliydi ancak bizim zamanımız kısıtlı olduğu için kiliseye ve müzeye giremedik. Rehberimizin anlattığına göre taş kilise 1632'de yapılmış içinde ise Meryem Ana'ya adanmış kutsal ikon freskler ve denizcilerin adadığı gümüş plakalar bulunuyormuş. Kiliseye ek olarak sonradan yapılmış küçük müze de ise Perast'lı denizcilerin tarihini anlatan metinler dini objeler, tablolar ve yerel kültüre ait eserler sergileniyormuş.

According to the legend told by our guide, fishermen from Perast stumbled upon an icon of the Virgin Mary in the sea one day. This icon was like a miracle appearing in the midst of the waters. The fishermen carried the icon to their island, but it kept returning to the rocks. So, the people decided to create a small island by throwing stones into the sea at every opportunity. With centuries of patience and faith, stones were added one after another, and the Island of the Our Lady of the Rocks was born. This island became a miracle where human dreams and hard work met the sea. This legend lives on today. Every year on July 22nd, during the Fašinada ceremony, people celebrate the birth of the island and the strength of their faith. They sail around the island in boats and throw stones into the sea to nourish the island. These stones not only strengthen the rocks, but also become a symbol of a tradition, prayers, and hopes built upon them for centuries. I wish I could be here that day to throw a single stone. 🌸

Rehberimizin anlattığı efsaneye göre bir zamanlar Perast'ın balıkçıları denizde bir Meryem Ana ikonası rastlamışlar. Bu ikona suların ortasında beliren bir mucize gibiymiş. Balıkçılar onu adalarına taşımış ama ikona sürekli kayalara geri dönüyormuş bunun üzerine halk her fırsatta denize taş atarak küçük bir ada yaratmaya karar vermişler. Yüzyıllar boyunca taş üstüne taş eklenmiş sabır ve inançla da Kayaların Leydisi Adası doğmuş. İşte bu ada insan hayalinin ve emeğinin denizle buluştuğu bir mucize haline gelmiş. Bugün ise bu efsane hala yaşatılıyormuş. Her yıl 22 temmuz'da düzenlenen Fašinada töreninde adanın doğumunu ve inancının gücünü kutluyorlarmış. Halk teknelerle adının etrafını dolaşıyor denize taşları atıyor ve adayı besliyormuş. Bu taşlar sadece kayaları güçlendirmek için değil aynı zamanda yüzyıllardır üstüne gelen bir geleneğin, duaların ve umutların simgesi haline gelmiş. Gerçekten o gün burada olmayı ve bir taşla ben atmayı çok isterdim. 🌸

Just offshore from the cliffs near Our Lady of the Rocks Island, there was another quiet island surrounded by lush trees. Our guide told me it was called Sveti Dorde, or St. George's Island. This island was a natural island, and the 12th-century St. George's Monastery was located there. It was also a burial island where the nobles and sailors of Perast were buried. Unfortunately, it wasn't open to tourists. We passed it on our way to the Our Lady of the Rocks Island, and even in its current state, it was captivating. It had a peaceful, mysterious, and somewhat mystical air. However, its greenery amidst the endless blue sea captivated me.

Our Lady of the Rocks adasının hemen yanında yemyeşil ağaçlarıyla sessizce duran bir ada daha vardı rehberimiz buranın isminin Sveti Dorde diğer isminin ise Aziz George Adası olduğunu söylemişti. Bu ada doğal bir adaydı ve üzerinde 12. yüzyıldan kalma Aziz George Manastırı bulunuyormuş. Aynı zamanda bir mezarlık adasıymış Perast'ın soyluları ve denizcileri buraya gömülmüş. ⚰️Ancak maalesef turist ziyaretine açık değildi. Kayaların Leydi'di adasına giderken yanından geçtik bu şekilde gördüğümüz halde bile çok büyüleyiciydi. Huzurlu gizemli ve biraz da mistik bir havası vardı. Ancak sonsuz mavi denizin içinde yeşilliği ile beni kendine çekmişti.

Two islands, so close yet so distant, with very different stories and formations. One is the tranquil and peaceful Sveti Dorde Island, whose lush green trees add color to the blue of the Bay of Kotor. The other is the Island of Our Lady of the Rocks, a sparkling white church nestled in the deep blue sea. Of course, its splendor is entirely created by human labor.

Birbirine bu kadar yakın ama bir o kadar da uzak iki ada. Hikayeleri ve oluşumları ise çok farklı. Birisi sessiz ve huzur dolu, yemyeşil ağaçlarıyla Kotor körfezinin maviliklerine renk katmış Sveti Dorde Adası. Diğeri ise masmavideniz'in ortasında bembeyaz kilisesi ile parlayan ve tamamen insan gücüyle ihtişam kazanan Our Lady of the Rocks Adası.

Outside the church on Our Lady of the Rocks Island, there was an area with stairs; I think it was used as a lookout point. I remember couldn’t wait to climb those stairs.😊📶 As I slowly climbed the stone steps, the wind caressed my face more with each step, and the scent of the sea filled me more with each step. When I reached the top, the view before me was like a painting; endless blue sky on one side, and the quiet and mysterious island of Sveti Dorde on the other. It was so magical to stand here, lost in the distance, accompanied by these stories. For those few minutes I spent here, it was as if time melted away, the world grew smaller, and my heart swelled.❣️❤️ After going down and exploring the area a little more, we went to the lighthouse at the tip of the island and took a few photos there. Everyone was already snapping pictures like crazy.📸📷 This lighthouse was built as a navigation marker for small boats and passenger dinghies.⛵🔦

Kayaların Leydisi Adasındaki kilisenin dış kısmında merdivenli bir alan vardı sanırım burası önceden gözetleme alanı amacıyla kullanılmış. O merdivenleri çıkmak için sabırsızlandığımı hatırlıyorum.😊📶 Taş basamakları ağır ağır çıkarken her adımda rüzgar biraz daha dokundu yüzüme her adımda denizin kokusu biraz daha doldu içime. Yukarıya vardığımda karşımda duran manzara bir tablo gibiydi bir yanda sonsuz bir mavi diğer yanda ise sessiz ve gizemli Sveti Dorde Adası. Burada durmak bu hikayeler eşliğinde uzaklara dalmak çok büyüleyiciydi. Burada geçirdiğim birkaç dakika boyunca sanki zaman erimişti dünya küçülmüş, kalbim büyümüştü.❣️❤️ Aşağı inip etrafı biraz daha keşfettikten sonra adanın uç noktasında bulunan deniz fenerinin yanına gidip biraz da burada fotoğraf çektik. Zaten herkes çılgınlar gibi fotoğraf çekiyordu.📸📷 Bu fener küçük tekneler ve yolcu botları için bir navigasyon işareti olarak yapılmış.⛵🔦

It was time to leave. Our boat was approaching, and our tour guide was giving us warnings about our return journey. As we boarded the boat and set sail from Our of the Rocks Island, I had never imagined that an artificial island in the middle of the sea could be so beautiful. In that moment, I realized it was a living testament to what human imagination and power can create when combined. As we sailed through the azure waves, I looked back and saw a man-made wonder in the sea on one side, and natural beauty lying quietly under the shade of centuries-old trees on the other. Both were as majestic and magnificent as each other: light and prayer, shade and peace. It was as if, even as we departed, they were urging me to look back and hold that magnificence in my heart.🏝️

Gitme vakti gelmişti bizi götürecek olan tekne iyice yaklaşmış tur rehberimizde dönüş ile ilgili uyarılarını yapıyordu. Tekneye binip Our of the Rocks Adasından uzaklaşırken denizin ortasında yapay bir adanın bu kadar güzel olabileceğini düşünemezdim. O an anladım ki insan hayalinin ve gücünün birleştiğinde neler yaratabileceğinin canlı bir kanıtıydı burası. Masmavi dalgaların arasında ilerlerken geriye dönüp baktığımda bir yanda denizin ortasında insan eliyle oluşmuş bir mucize diğer yanda ise asırlık ağaçların gölgesinde sessizce duran doğal güzellik. Her ikisi de birbirinden muhteşem ve heybetli. Bir ışık ve dua diğeri gölge ve huzur. Sanki ayrılırken bile geriye dönüp bakmamı o ihtişama kalbimde saklamamı istediler.🏝️
