When My Role Model Disappointed Me

Hello everyone:

A role model may fail you, but your dream should never fail you.

Sometimes in life, we look up to people because of their achievements, personality, or the way they guide us. We believe in them so much that they become our role models. But the truth is, some of them end up disappointing us with their words or actions.

For me, that person was my stepfather.

I lost my father when I was just 11 years old in primary six. It was a painful experience because I loved him so much. He was caring and supportive, always making sure the family was okay. After his death, life became difficult for us. My mother later remarried, and that was how my stepfather came into my life.

At first, I struggled to accept him. I thought a lot about my late father and missed him every day. But over time, I began to adapt and cooperate. Slowly, I started seeing my stepfather as a role model. He was a literate man, a doctor, and a surgeon in a big government hospital. He often called me, asked me about my dreams, and gave me advice. Since I had no close friends then, his attention meant a lot to me.

I admired him greatly because I also dreamed of becoming a doctor. I believed with his guidance and support, I could follow in his footsteps.

But one day, everything changed.

When I was almost through with secondary school, I went to him and explained my plans to further my education so I could chase my dream. What he told me that day broke my heart. He said, “Education does not guarantee success. Don’t waste your time and money. Go out and hustle.”

At first, I thought he was joking. How could a man who built his life and career on education say that? But I soon realized he was serious. From that moment, he refused to support me. Even when my mother tried to speak on my behalf, it almost caused conflict between them. That was the day my respect for him ended.

I felt betrayed. Here was someone I trusted, someone I admired, suddenly telling me my dream was useless. It hurt me so much that I left home without telling anyone.

That experience opened my eyes. I realized that not all role models truly want the best for you. Some are pretenders. They may look successful, but deep inside, they don’t want you to become like them.

Even though his words discouraged me, I learned something important. You cannot depend on others to always push you toward your dream. Sometimes, the very people you respect can let you down. But you must hold on to your vision.

Today, I still carry my dream in my heart. That painful moment taught me that role models can fail, but your dream must never fail.
