Stop and Shop: Finding Our Market Goodies

Warm Hello to all our amazing Hive friends in this wonderful community @asean.hive! Few days ago, we went out to do some errands. Before going home, we stopped by at the market to pick up some items.

Our first stop was at the baking store. It’s a big store with two other branches in the city. As we got inside, I noticed a big oven with two layers. I secretly wished that someday we could buy this equipment too if we need to produce more baked products.

These equipment also caught my attention. In front, shredder for mature coconut; behind, big mixers for cake batter or whipping cream that are in big quantity and can also be used for mixing bread dough.

I came across this shelf with syrup and different liquid flavorings such as chocolate, mocha, ube (purple yam), etc. I still have some left at home but I just wanted to check the price. Thankfully, for these items there’s only a slight increase in their prices. Anyway, we went to the back aisles to look for the items that we need.

We got some condensed milk or the thickened sweetened milk in original and ube (purple yam) flavor. The original is the blue one and ube is the purple one. They also have other varieties; green can in buko pandan (coconut-screwpine) flavor and yellow can in mango flavor. For now, we just need the original and ube flavor.

They also have available whipping cream, all-purpose cream, and Fudge-it in caramel and yema (custard-like) flavor. Fudge-It is used for cake fillings and can be mixed with other creams for coatings and toppings for different baked products.

I also checked this brand of cocoa powder (about 8 USD, half kilo). I haven’t used this brand yet but I might buy this one when we consume the other brand. The price of cocoa powder has increased tremendously reportedly due to the lack of supply of cocoa beans.

We also bought few packs of plastic clamshell for banana cake and ube chiffon cake. Chocolate bars are also getting expensive. We need it for toppings, brownies, and other desserts. I still have some left, so next time I have no choice but to buy this brand.

Next stop is at Carbon Market (Cebu City, Philippines). Many small stores can be found here selling different goods. They have different sections: seafood, vegetables and fruits, store supplies, and so on. In the evening, farmers also arrive with their fresh produce from the farms and have a display on the narrow roads within the market.

For now, we just stopped by at this small shop around the corner to buy lumpia wrapper (similar to spring roll wrapper). In this store, we usually buy oil, tubs, spring roll wrapper, sliced ham, sticky rice, white and brown sugar.

At this point, we got hungry and wanted to stop by somewhere with less traffic to eat snacks. We happened to pass by this small snack shop by the road few kilometers from the market. They didn’t have a signage but the cup has a sticker, “Purple Panda.” That must be their name. Basically, they sell beverages: strawberry, mango, green apple, iced tea, iced coffee, lemonade, and etc. Burger, French fries, squid rolls, sandwiches, and quick meals (with rice and viand) are also available.



I got particularly attracted to this simple line art or line drawing (I’m not sure of the exact term) on the wall. Simple but looks cute. A funny thought crossed my mind; I told my partner that we should imitate the drawing, he should be wearing my sunglasses and face each other while we have our pictures taken. He just shrugged a bit, I guess he was too hungry to listen to what I was saying. 😄



To quench our thirst, we had strawberry milk shake paired with burger with cheese and egg. The burger was not like the ones sold at popular shops but the serving was already decent. We love the strawberry milk shake though, not sweet and doesn’t have artificial strawberry taste. We were satisfied with the order then headed home. By the time we got home, it was already near dusk.
