Wuthering Heights [ESP/ENG]
Hello everyone! Ahhhh! I'm so excited because I finally finished reading this beautiful novel by Emily Brontë, which, despite being published in 1847, has become a classic of Gothic novels over the years, with a substantial plot full of conflict and, above all, love and revenge.
¡Hola Hola, gente de internet! ¡Ahhhh! Estoy muy emocionada porque finalmente terminé de leer esta hermosa novela de Emily Bronte que a pesar de haber sido publicada en 1847, con el pasar de los años se convirtió en un clásico de las novelas góticas, con una trama sustanciosas llena de conflictos y sobre todo de amor y venganza.
It all begins when Heathcliff, a lonely orphan, arrives at the home of Mr. Earnshaw, who is moved by his plight and decides to adopt him. There, the boy lives a bittersweet life because of Mr. Earnshaw's children: Catherine (Mr. Earnshaw's daughter) becomes his best friend, but Hindley (Mr. Earnshaw's son) constantly mistreats him. As the years pass, Heathcliff falls madly in love with Catherine, and she with him. They even experience an idyllic romance, as they are not related by blood. However, due to social status, she decides to marry another man, Edgar Linton, which ignites a torrent of anger and jealousy in Heathcliff. He flees to avoid witnessing this romance that will cause him so much pain. Nevertheless, he returns years later, a very rich and powerful man, but with a burning desire for revenge that extends to a second generation and leads everything to a Gothic conclusion.
Todo inicia cuando Heathcliff, un niño solo y huérfano llega a casa del Señor Earnshaw, quien se conmueve y decide adoptarlo, allí el niño vive una vida entre amarga y dulce por causa de los hijos del señor Earnshaw, pues Catherine (la hija del señor) se vuelve su mejor amiga, pero Hindley (el hijo) lo maltrata constantemente. Con el pasar de los años Heathcliff se enamora locamente de Catherine y ella también de él, incluso viven un idílico romance ya que no son hermanos de sangre, sin embargo, por una cuestión de estatus social, ella decide casarse con otro hombre, con Edgar Linton, y esto fe algo que hizo estallar de ira y celos a Heathcliff, así que se fue huyendo para no tener que ver ese romance que le haría tanto daño, no obstante regresa años más tarde convertido en un hombre muy rico y poderoso pero con un gran deseo de venganza que abarca a una segunda generación y lo conduce todo a un desenlace al mejor estilo gótico.
I loved this novel because it exposes human nature at its most extreme. On one hand, it shows us how mistreatment can affect a child; being treated with contempt can distort their reality and make them obsessed with power and wealth, since they will see these as inherent elements of respect or dignity. And who doesn't want to be respected in this world? 🤷♀ But this brings me to the second important point of the story... revenge. Yes, throughout the novel I had a fluctuating mix of emotions because at the beginning, although I was bothered by Hindley's (Catherine's brother) unhealthy attitude, I also felt tenderness seeing the friendship between Heathcliff and Catherine, and the way in which he took refuge in her in search of the affection, respect and love that had always been denied him. She was the only person who listened to him, who gave him affection, and I swear I enjoyed the idyll, with those scenes so well described by Brontë that highlight the elegance of her time.
Amé esta novela porque expone la naturaleza humana en su máxima expresión, por una parte nos muestra de que manera puede afectar a un niño el maltrato, el hecho de que lo traten con desprecio puede distorsionar su realidad y hacer que se obsesione con el poder y la riqueza, ya que él lo tomará como elementos inherentes al respecto o a la dignidad y ¿Quién no quiere ser respetado en este mundo? 🤷♀ pero esto me lleva al segundo punto importante de la historia... la venganza. Sí, a lo largo de la novela tuve un cúmulo cambiante de emociones porque al inicio, si bien me molestaba la actitud malsana de Hindley (el hermano de Catherine) también me daba ternura ver la amistad entre Heathcliff y Catherine, y la manera en que él fue refugiándose en ella en busca del cariño, respeto y amor que siempre le habían negado, ella fue la única persona que lo escuchó, que le brindó afecto, y les juro que disfruté del idilio, con esas escenas tan bien descritas por Bronte que resaltan la elegancia de su época.
But then, although I disagree, I could understand why he became obsessed with Catherine and his idea of revenge. He felt betrayed by the only person he trusted, and he discovered that deep down she had always wanted to be a woman of high society. This exposes the hypocrisy of the system and presents two options: living a lie but with an influential surname that grants power and status, or following one's own feelings even if it means living a modest life. All of this ended up distorting Heathcliff's own thoughts and feelings, making him a complex character and perhaps the most profound in the entire novel.
Pero luego, aunque no estoy de acuerdo, pude entender porqué él se obsesionó con Catherine y su idea de vengarse, porque él se sintió traicionado por la única persona en la que confiaba, descubrió que ella en el fondo siempre quiso ser una mujer de la alta sociedad, lo cuál expone la hipocresía del sistema y pone en la balanza dos vertientes: vivir una vida de mentira pero con un apellido influyente que te proporcione poder y estatus, o dejase llevar por los sentimientos propios aunque esto represente tener que llevar una vida modesta. Todo esto terminó tergiversando los propios pensamientos y sentimientos de Heathcliff, volviéndolo un personaje complejo y quizá el más profundo de toda la novela.
I adored Brontë's narrative style because, in addition to being elegant in her writing, she uses the device of telling a story within a story, and she also changes narrator on occasion. Let's not forget that the plot suddenly shifts protagonists, and so we go from having Heathcliff and Catherine as the central focus, to having Cathy and Hareton as the focus of attention, in this case with Heathcliff as the counterpart or "villain," so to speak. But he goes beyond being a villain as such, a flat being who does harm for no reason. On the contrary, he is a character built with nuances and curves, molded from pain and disillusionment. That's why he is dark, somber, and cold, but at the same time, he is a tormented man, because deep down he has never stopped loving and therefore values what this feeling means.
Adoré el estilo narrativo de Bronte porque además de ser elegante en su escritura, ella usa el recurso de contar una historia dentro de otra, y además cambia de narrador en algunas ocasiones, no olvidemos que la trama de pronto cambia de protagonistas y así pasamos de tener a Heathcliff y a Catherine como eje central, a tener a Cathy y Hareton como foco de atención, en este caso con Heathcliff como contraparte o "villano" por llamarlo de alguna forma, pero él va más allá de ser un villano como tal, un ser plano que hace daño porque sí, al contrario, es un personaje construido con matices y líneas curvas, moldeado desde el dolor y la desilusión, por eso es oscuro, sombrío y frío, pero al mismo tiempo es un hombre atormentado, porque en el fondo no ha dejado de amar y por eso valora lo que significa este sentimiento.
