Os Dez Mandamentos [Review] ESP/ENG
This is a Brazilian series based on biblical texts that tell the story of how Moses was rescued from certain death when Pharaoh Seti ordered the murder of all Hebrew babies. Ironically, Pharaoh's daughter rescued him from the waters of the Nile River and decided to adopt him. However, Miriam, the baby's sister, offered the princess a Hebrew woman to breastfeed and care for him for a while. The girl then took the baby to her own mother, but later the baby was raised as a prince in the palace until he discovered his true origins. He later returned as the savior of his people by order of God. The new pharaoh, Ramses, who had been raised as Moses' brother, refused to let the Hebrew people go. Then God caused 10 horrible plagues to fall on Egypt, which finally forced the pharaoh to give in. The rest of the story narrates the journey through the desert and the different physical and internal battles that the Hebrews and their leader had to live through.
Esta es una serie brasileña basada en los textos bíblicos que cuentan la historia de como Moisés fue rescatado de una muerte segura cuando el faraón Seti mandó a asesinar a todos los bebés hebreos, irónicamente la hija del faraón lo rescató de entre las aguas del río Nilo y decidió adoptarlo, pero Miriam, la hermana del bebé le ofreció a la princesa conseguir una mujer hebrea para que lo amamantara y se encargara de cuidarlo por un tiempo, de esta manera la niña condujo al bebé con su propia madre, pero posteriormente el bebé fue criado como príncipe en el palacio hasta que descubrió su verdadero origen, y más tarde regresó como salvador de su pueblo por orden de Dios. El nuevo faraón, Ramsés, quién había sido criado como hermano de Moisés, se negaba a dejar marchar al pueblo hebreo, entonces Dios hizo que cayeran 10 horribles plagas sobre Egipto que finalmente obligaron al faraón a ceder, del resto la historia narra la travesía por el desierto y las diferentes batallas físicas e internas que los hebreos y su líder tuvieron que vivir.
I have so much to say about this series that I don't even know where to begin, but I think I'll start with the story. It's a faithful adaptation of the biblical texts, omitting very little. However, in order to make the series much more engaging, they gave much more depth to all the characters and even added some new ones. In this way, the series maintains that characteristic blend of Brazilian productions that includes comedy and dramatic scenes. The new characters and subplots don't feel forced at all because they are perfectly positioned and play an important role. If there's anything I have to complain about, it's that at times the pacing was slow, especially when they started delving into the history of Moab and the Moabites, but it's clear that this was done to lengthen the series given its enormous success.
Tengo tanto que decir acerca de esta serie que no sé ni por dónde empezar, pero creo que lo haré por la historia, es una adaptación fiel de los textos bíblicos, omitiendo muy poco, sin embargo, en aras de hacer la serie mucho más atractiva le dieron mucha más profundidad a todos los personajes e incluso añadieron algunos nuevos, de esta manera la serie mantiene ese matiz característico de las producciones brasileñas que incluyen comedia y escenas de drama. Los nuevos personajes y las subtramas no se sienten forzadas para nada porque están perfectamente posicionados y juegan un rol importante, aunque si hay algo de lo que deba quejarme es que algunas veces mantenía un ritmo lento, en especial cuando empezaron a profundizar en la historia de Moab y los moabitas, pero se nota que fue con la intención de alargar la serie en vista del enorme éxito que estaba teniendo.
The performances were spectacular, very assertive, but I would like to highlight those of Sérgio Marone and Camila Rodrigues (Ramses and Nefertari) because they had very dramatic scenes where they shone, especially in the death of the firstborn.
Las actuaciones estuvieron espectaculares, muy asertivas, pero me gustaría resaltar las de Sérgio Marone y Camila Rodrigues (Ramsés y Nefertari) porque tuvieron escenas muy dramáticas donde se lucieron, en especial en la muerte de los primogénitos
Another point worth considering is the character development. Although based on the Bible, the characters have much more depth because the goal is obviously to empathize with them and show each aspect that led them to make certain decisions. In my opinion, the characters who evolved the most were Zipporah (Moses' wife), who went from being an aggressive and distrustful woman to one with a more open and pious heart; Bethany (Zipporah's sister), who went from being a rebellious and selfish young woman to an honorable woman with a great sense of love for her family; and finally, Aaron (Moses' brother), who used to be skeptical, distrustful, and bitter, a man prone to complaining and assigning blame. However, God's call led him to become a kinder and more conscientious man; he became more reflective.
Otro punto digno a tomar en cuenta tiene que ver con el desarrollo de personajes, porque a pesar de que están basados en la biblia tienen mucha más profundidad porque obviamente el objetivo es empatizar con ellos y mostrar cada aspecto que los hizo tomar ciertas decisiones, pero según mi opinión los personajes que más evolucionaron fueron Zipora (esposa de Moisés) que pasó de ser una mujer agresiva y desconfiada a una con un corazón más abierto y piadoso, Betania (hermana de Zipora) que pasó de ser una joven rebelde y egoísta, a una mujer honrada y con un gran sentido de amor por la familia, y finalmente tenemos a Aaron (hermano de Moisés) quien solía ser escéptico, desconfiado y amargado, un hombre propenso a quejarse y a repartir culpas, sin embargo el llamado de Dios lo condujo a ser un hombre más amable y consciente, se hizo más reflexivo.
The cinematography and special effects are among the best qualities of this series, and this is especially evident in the scenes of the ten plagues, where the CGI was used superbly. In fact, my favorite scenes were those depicting the plague of darkness, as they used a night-vision camera effect to show the viewer what was happening. This, combined with the wonderful acting, made it much more believable. The scenes of the exodus and the battles were also fabulous, but my absolute favorite was the parting of the Red Sea. I understand that they used drone footage of Iguazu Falls, and through special effects, they created the impression that the waters were flowing upwards instead of downwards.
La fotografía y los efectos especiales son una de las mejores cualidades de esta serie, y esto se enfatiza más en las escenas de las diez plagas donde utilizaron de una forma soberbia el CGI. De hecho las escenas que más me gustaron fueron las de la plaga de la oscuridad, ya que usaron el efecto de cámara de visión nocturna para mostrar al espectador lo que estaba sucediendo, esto aunado a las maravillosas actuaciones hizo que fuese mucho más creíble. Las escenas del éxodo y las batallas también estuvieron fabulosas pero definitivamente mi preferida fue la escena de la apertura del mar rojo para la cuál, tengo entendido que se usaron imágenes de las cataratas del Iguazú que fueron capturadas por un dron y mediante efectos dieron la impresión de que las aguas iban hacia arriba en lugar de hacia abajo.
The costumes were also magnificent, and something that strongly caught my attention was the evident amount of prior work in theology, archaeology, and history behind the series. The marked contrast between the different cultures and contexts is noticeable; for example, the Hebrews dressed differently from the Moabites, who looked different from the Midianites, while the Egyptians stood out for the clothing we already know, and in turn, they were different from the people of Nubia.
El vestuario también estuvo regio, y algo que llamó poderosamente mi atención fue que se notó el arduo trabajo previo en teología, arqueología e historia que hubo detrás de la serie, pues se nota el marcado contraste entre las diferentes culturas y contextos, por ejemplo los hebreos vestían diferente a los moabitas y estos se veían diferentes a los madianitas mientras que los egipcios se destacaban por la vestimenta que ya conocemos, y a su vez se diferenciaban de la gente de Nubia.
Finally, I can't say goodbye without mentioning the soundtrack. Seriously, it's every bit as good as the biggest Hollywood productions, even the film based on this story that received seven Oscar nominations in 1957 and won for Best Visual Effects. Just like with the costumes, you can distinguish the sounds of the different ethnicities and cultures, but the best part is that the Hebrew songs are actually in Hebrew, and some are even adaptations of biblical hymns. The sounds are authentic: harp, lute, and flutes, but my favorites are the songs that played during the miracles or battles; the sound is simply epic.
Por último no me puedo despedir sin hablarles del soundtrack, en serio, no tiene nada que envidiarle a las grandes producciones de Hollywood, incluso a la película basada en esta historia que tuvo siete nominaciones a los premios Oscar en 1957 y que ganó mejor efectos visuales. Al igual que en el vestuario puedes diferenciar los sonidos de las diferentes etnias y culturas, pero lo mejor de todo es que las canciones de los hebreos están realmente en hebreo, y de hecho algunas son adaptaciones de las alabanzas de la biblia, los sonidos son auténticos: arpa, laud y flautas, pero mis preferidos son los temas que sonaban durante los milagros o batallas, el sonido es simplemente épico.
