One Hundred Years of Solitude [Review] ESP/ENG
Hello everyone! How are you? Today I'd like to talk to you about the Netflix series that's an adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's most famous novel, yes, obviously I'm referring to One Hundred Years of Solitude, which, to my great surprise, seemed to be a worthy adaptation of such a literary work in every sense 🤗, and as you know, I like to carefully break down the series and movies I intend to review and I also like to analyze them in depth.
¡Hola Hola, gente de internet! ¿Cómo están? Hoy me gustaría hablarles de la serie de Netflix que es una adaptación de la novela más famosa de Gabriel García Márquez, sí, obviamente me refiero a Cien años de soledad , la cuál me pareció, para mi enorme sorpresa, una adaptación a la altura de semejante obra literaria en todos los sentidos 🤗, y tal como ustedes saben, a mi me gusta desglosar cuidadosamente las series y películas que pretendo reseñar y también me gusta analizarlas a fondo.
Story/Historia
Let's start with the story. Wow! I'll confess something: I've never been able to read this novel on my own. I've really tried, but I always end up tangled up in that world of Aurelianos and José Arcadios 😵. So, the only way I've been able to understand the story is that every time the power went out in my city (I live in Valencia, Venezuela, and last year the power went out a lot), my sister would start reading the novel, and I would ask her to read aloud. Then, every now and then, we would stop to analyze each chapter or character. So, when I saw how they adapted the story for the series, I realized they did a great job: they included the most relevant points of the story, highlighting its central theme, magical realism, in a truly masterful way. One of my favorite scenes is Father Nicanor's levitation (something that's mentioned a lot in the book).
Comencemos por la historia. ¡Wow! la verdad es que les voy a confesar algo, nunca antes he podido leer por mi cuenta esta novela, de verdad lo he intentado pero siempre termino enredada en ese universo de Aurelianos y José Arcadios 😵, así que la única manera que tuve de comprender la historia es que cada vez que se iba la energía eléctrica en mi ciudad, (vivo en Valencia, Venezuela y el año pasado tendía a irse mucho la electricidad) mi hermana se ponía a leer la novela y yo le pedía que leyera en voz alta, entonces de vez en cuando nos deteníamos a analizar cada capítulo o personaje, así que al ver la manera en que adaptaron la historia de manera audiovisual para esta serie, me di cuenta que efectivamente hicieron un gran trabajo: pusieron los puntos más relevantes de la historia, resaltando de forma regia el punto central de la misma, el realismo mágico, siendo una de mis escenas favoritas la levitación del padre Nicanor (algo que se menciona mucho en el libro).
I also liked how they handled the storyline of Remedios Moscote (Aureliano Buendía's wife). I confess that before watching the series, I thought this would generate controversy due to the significant age difference between the characters, but it didn't. The production was very careful with the scenes between these two characters, while still respecting the main storyline. I don't know the age of the actress who played Remedios, but the truth is, they portrayed her so well that she looked like a child.
También me gustó como manejaron el tema de Remedios Moscote (la esposa de Aureliano Buendía) aquí yo les confieso que antes de ver la serie pensé que esto generaría controversia debido a la abismal diferencia de edad entre los personajes, pero no fue así, la producción fue muy cuidadosa con las escenas de estos dos personajes, sin dejar de respetar el curso de la historia principal. Yo ignoro la edad que tenía la actriz que interpretó a Remedios pero la verdad es que la caracterizaron tan bien que parecía una niña.
Narration/Narración
The fact that the series has a narrator makes it even more fascinating; it serves as a bridge between the audience and the story itself, a bridge that transports you into the heart of Macondo and makes you feel like another character. And although the series hasn't yet revealed who this narrator is, I'm almost certain it is. Everything points to it being another character who hasn't been born yet (the father of the last Aureliano). We'll see if I'm right, hehe 😄
El hecho de que la serie tenga un narrador la hace todavía más fascinante, sirve como el puente entre la audiencia y la historia en sí, un puente que te traslada al interior de Macondo y te hace vivir como un personaje más. Y aunque la serie aún no menciona quién es ese narrador, estoy casi segura de quién es, todo apunta a que será un personaje más que todavía no ha nacido (el padre del último Aureliano) ya veremos si no me equivoco jeje 😄
Performances/Actuaciones
The actors did a magnificent job 😆, especially those who played José Arcadio Buendía (the patriarch, the first of the line) and Aureliano, Colonel Aureliano Buendía. Both are complex and different characters, yet impulsive, and I think both actors nailed the gestures, the looks, and even the tone of their voices (elements often described in the book). Úrsula and Pilar Ternera are also important characters in the series, and I think the actresses handled them very well. Regarding the characterization, I think they particularly excelled with the character of Aureliano Buendía, because the actor who plays him doesn't resemble him at all (he has delicate, fine features and even blue eyes), but they darkened his skin a bit, had him wear contact lenses, and accentuated his cheekbones, so that he effectively looks like the image we have of Colonel Aureliano. Ahhh and I'm very happy although I never imagined they would choose Ruggero Pasquarelli as Pietro Crespi, I think it was a great choice, not only because he looks delicate and almost ethereal as described in the original work, but because he is truly Italian.
Los actores hicieron trabajo magnífico 😆, en especial los que interpretaron a José Arcadio Buendía (el patriarca, el primero de la estirpe) y Aureliano, el Coronel Aureliano Buendía, ambos son personajes complejos, y diferentes, pero al mismo tiempo impulsivos , y creo que ambos actores dieron en el clavo con los gestos, las miradas y hasta el tono de las voces (elementos que se describen a menudo en el libro) Úrsula y Pilar Ternera también son personajes importantes dentro de la serie y creo que las actrices supieron manejarlos muy bien. En cuanto a la caracterización creo que sobre todo se destacaron con el personaje de Aureliano Buendía, porque el actor que lo interpreta no se parece en nada (tiene rasgos delicados, finos e incluso los ojos azules) pero le oscurecieron un poco la piel, le hicieron llevar lentes de contacto y pronunciaron sus pómulos, de manera que en efecto se ve como la imagen que tenemos del Coronel Aureliano. Ahhh y estoy muy feliz aunque nunca imaginé que eligieran a Ruggero Pasquarelli como Pietro Crespi, creo que fue una gran elección, no solo porque se ve delicado y casi etéreo como se describe en la obra original, sino porque es italiano de verdad.
The only actress I'm not happy with is the one who plays Rebeca, since García Márquez describes her in the book as a very beautiful woman, and let's be honest, that actress is far from it. They tried to justify it by saying that the audience might have expected a conventionally beautiful woman, like a blonde with light eyes 🙄 😒, and that obviously, given the story's context, they couldn't do that. That's completely absurd because nobody expected her to be blonde. Beauty has nothing to do with race; it's not tied to a specific ethnicity. And while it is relative and everyone perceives it differently, there are established norms. I wouldn't have cared if she were Black, white, light-skinned, or had Indigenous features, as long as she was a beautiful woman. And while this might seem irrelevant, it is, because the book mentions that Amaranta, who wasn't ugly but wasn't beautiful either, was completely overshadowed by Rebeca. In the series, however, it seems to be the complete opposite; it makes Amaranta look even more beautiful. Furthermore, the actress playing Rebeca is incredibly bland, devoid of emotion; she doesn't move you, she evokes absolutely nothing.
La única actriz con la que no estoy conforme es con la que interpreta a Rebeca, ya que García Márquez la describe en el libro como una mujer muy bella, y seamos honestos, esa actriz está muy lejos de serlo. Por ahí quisieron justificar el hecho de que el publico tal vez esperaba una belleza hegemónica como una actriz rubia con ojos claros 🙄 😒, y que evidentemente debido al contexto de la historia no podrían hacerlo así, algo completamente absurdo porque nadie esperaba que fuese rubia, la belleza no tiene nada que ver con la raza, no está ligada a una etnia en específico, y si bien es relativa y cada quién la percibe de manera distinta, hay códigos establecidos. No me hubiese importado que fuese negra, blanca, trigueña o con rasgos indígenas, siempre y cuando fuese una mujer linda, y aunque parezca que esto no es un dato relevante, sí lo es, porque el libro menciona que Amaranta, quien sin ser fea no era bella, quedaba totalmente opacada con Rebeca, y en la serie parece todo lo contrario, hace que Amaranta luzca aún más hermosa. Además la actuación de esa mujer interpretando a Rebeca es muy sosa, carente de emociones, no conmueve, no genera absolutamente nada.
Cinematography/Fotografía
The cinematography, camera angles, and setting were another key element that highlighted the power of magical realism. Those golden and sepia filters in some scenes evoked nostalgia for the past, those shots that traversed the corridors of the house and showed it in all its splendor, the appearances of Prudencio Aguilar and the way in which he took José Arcadio Buendía, which marked the end of the first season—truly, I have nothing negative to say.
La fotografía, los planos de cámara y la ambientación fue otro punto relevante que hizo resaltar el poder del realismo mágico, esos filtros dorados y sepia en algunas escenas que evocaban la nostalgia del pasado, esos planos que atravesaban los corredores de la casa y la mostraban en todo su esplendor, las apariciones de Prudencio Aguilar y la forma que en que se llevó a José Arcadio Buendía, y que marcó el final de la primera temporada, de verdad, no tengo nada negativo que decir.
All of this left me wanting more, eager to see the story continue. I hope they don't take too long to make the second season. Oh, and I hope they're more careful with the casting of new characters like Remedios the Beauty. Oh my God! I'm afraid of what they're going to do with this character 😨, considering their current concept of beauty, especially in this series.
Todo esto me dejó con ganas de más, de seguir viendo la historia, ojalá que no se tarden mucho para la realización de la segunda temporada. Ahh y que sean más cuidadosos con la elección de los nuevos personajes como Remedios la Bella, ¡Ay Dios mío! ¡Tengo miedo de lo que irán a hacer con este personaje! 😨 tomando en cuenta el concepto de belleza que tienen últimamente, y en especial en lo que se refiere a esta serie.

Es una serie. Con cualquier adaptación te diría que leas siempre el libro, es el punto de referencia y cuando veas la serie entenderás mejor todo (con este libro en particular te diría que debes hacer un árbol genialógico de la descendencia de los personajes)

No he leído el libro pero si se que es bastante popular esta historia entre las tantas de García Márquez, la serie parece que estuvo muy bien en cuanto a hacerla en base a lo que el libro muestra, sin embargo siempre hay detalles como los que mencionan que pueden ser escoger equivocadamente a los actores.
